BOSTON A bill creating a Student Loan Borrower Bill of Rights and an ombudsman’s office tasked with protecting those borrowers has gone into effect in Massachusetts.
State Sen. Eric Lesser, D-Longmeadow, was an author of that bill, and six years after he first proposed the legislation it passed in January as part of the state Legislature’s $627M economic development bill. On July 1, Arwen Thoman was named the state’s first student loan ombudsman, whose work will be conducted out of the attorney general’s office. ....

HOLYOKE On a dark, rainy night on July 9, 1946, about two dozen servicemen aboard a B-17 “Flying Fortress” were returning home from war. They had served in World War II and were flying towards Westover Field from Greenland with their final instructions to “Report for Separation.”
The war was over and they were heading back to their families a journey they never completed. The B-17, carrying 25 servicemen, crashed into Mount Tom in the late hours of the night. The men died upon impact on the side of the mountain, nearly 300 feet below the summit. ....

The grainy, black-and-white news reel footage shows the wreckage of a B-17 Flying Fortress in bits and pieces. Clothing and other personal belongings of those aboard can be seen strewn across the rocky, wooded mountainside.
A mighty workhorse of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ bomber force in World War II, the aircraft had been converted for use to ferry soldiers and sailors home from war duty. On the night of July 9, 1946, it had been flying south from Goose Bay in Labrador, Canada. ....
