The grainy, black-and-white news reel footage shows the wreckage of a B-17 Flying Fortress in bits and pieces. Clothing and other personal belongings of those aboard can be seen strewn across the rocky, wooded mountainside.
A mighty workhorse of the U.S. Army Air Corps’ bomber force in World War II, the aircraft had been converted for use to ferry soldiers and sailors home from war duty. On the night of July 9, 1946, it had been flying south from Goose Bay in Labrador, Canada. ....

■First place winner in the Northampton Jaycees Christmas Lighting contest was Miss Helen Chmyzinski, whose home is at 227 Prospect St. Co-chairmen of the contest are Robert Cahillane and David Neal. Miss Chmyzinski will receive a $25 savings bond.
■Julie and David Eisenhower, formerly of Northampton, spent Christmas at the White House. Everyone received “nice presents, but nothing spectacular,” said Julie. Her parents, President and Mrs. Richard Nixon, gave her a bright Chinese red pants suit with a wide zipper on the hip length over-blouse.
