Richie Fulkerson will begin his tenure as Fairfield Chief of Police on July 12th, after he was appointed to the position and approved by the City Council Tuesday night. He says he has nearly 30 years of experience with Illinois State Police that will help him run a smaller city force, and, though the budget will be smaller, he says Fairfield is well-equipped. Several Fairfield FFA members were honored at an awards ceremony at SIU Friday as part of the District 5 State FFA Convention. Sara McGehee received her State Winner plaque for the second straight year in the FFA State Agri-Science Fair in Environmental Systems. Nine chapter members also received their State FFA Degrees this year. The Wayne County Board will meet tonight at 7 in the upstairs courtroom of the Wayne County Courthouse. Governor J.B. Pritzker said earlier this week the state is set to move forward to Phase Five of his Restore Illinois Plan on June 11th. Over half the state's population is fully vaccinated, per the CDC, and COVID-19 numbers are declining across the state. Phase Five is a full re-opening, with all sectors of the economy, businesses, schools, and recreation resuming normal operations- with new safety guidance and procedures. The Wabash County Health Department announced four new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, bringing its total to 1,310; two people were in isolation. Wayne County did not release an update. The state Department of Public Health announced 478 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday and seven additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,383,065 cases and 22,842 deaths. The Southern Region had a positivity rate of 1.3 percent on May 30th, down from 1.4 percent on the 29th. The Fairfield City Council met last night and swore in new members after last month’s election. Awards of Appreciation were given to outgoing aldermen Jim Griffith and Ralph Barbre, as well as former Interim Mayor and current alderman Gary Moore. City Street & Bridge Leadman Robert Kamp was presented with a Hero Award for intervening when three dogs attempted to attack children last month. TIF will pay 25 percent of the total project cost. Aldermen also approved a $7,000 expenditure for five City Band concerts this summer, contingent upon Director Josh Livesay being able to form the band. ....
