Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield awarded Smile awards to Reta Mathews and Carol Nale Vaughan. The award was started by the late Mayor Mike Dreith. The group plans to award it annually. "SMILE" stands for SHINE,MOTIVATE,INSPIRE, LEADS, EXCEL. Reta Mathews and Carol Vaughan had been chosen as recipients by Mike before his death. Reta and her late husband Preston could be seen working daily during summer months keeping the landscape at Freedom Park attractive to visitors of the downtown area. Reta has turned over her park duties to Carol, whose commitment to Wasson Park has been ongoing for at least 17 years. Carol notes the Tennant Landscaping donations of plants at both parks and Elaine Gardner, Chuck Reynolds and Angela Vaughan help watering the parks. Emma Wiseman of Albion has been recognized as a 2022 Illinois FFA Top 10 Section President, and she will be honored during the 2022 Illinois FFA State Convention in June. Wiseman was the 2020-2021 Edwards County FFA President and is the current FFA Section 23 President. She received her State FFA Degree in 2021, a Top-10 Chapter President Award in 2021, and the Gold Chapter President Award in 2020. Fairfield police investigated a traffic crash at the intersection of Commerce Drive and West Delaware Street yesterday afternoon. Police say 27-year-old Fairfield resident Jeffrey May was driving a 2012 Chevrolet and pulled into the path of a 2010 Freightliner bus operated by 56-year-old Waltonville resident Tammy Durietz. No injuries were reported, and May was cited for disobeying a stop sign. No injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident about a mile north of Cisne Thursday afternoon. The Wayne City Village Board met Monday night in front of a sizeable crowd. It said it will be better about enforcing ordinances, with the mayor saying letters will be sent posthaste for violations. It reminded the crowd many ordinances are listed on the city website, and it is a resident's responsibility to know the rules or to ask about them. The Ambulance Committee and firefighters thanked everyone who made their fundraising lunch a success, but they are still short on EMTs. Anyone interested in joining should contact Village Hall for more information. The village is looking to hire a high-school worker this summer, as well, to help with various tasks, and another to help in the park. The City of Fairfield and Wayne County Chamber of Commerce will hold an Easter Egg Hunt at Leo French Park at noon on April 16th. Wayne County Clerk Liz Ann Woodrow says there will be six contested races in the upcoming June primary election, all on the Republican side. She held a lottery yesterday morning to determine their placement on the ballot; in order, Crystal Ellis and Yvette Anderson have filed for Treasurer; Andy Glover and Randy Hedrick for District 2 on the County Board; Roy Estheimer, Eddie Barbre, and Brandon Bittles for District 3; Joshua Isle, Matt Shreve, and Jeremy Witter for District 5; Bill Bruce and Vern Hutson for District 6; and Gene Kollak, Steven Troyer, and Shane Neuman in District 7. Estheimer, Hutson, Kollak, and Neuman are incumbents. The primary election this year will be June 28th. Residents will be able to seek vote-by-mail ballots between March 30th and June 23rd, and in-person early voting will begin May 19th. The Fairfield City Council met last night and held a public hearing for a potential business district. The idea would increase sales taxes by one percent in its boundaries on most purchases. Downtown merchants Kristi Hornung, Nicole Jordan, Marjorie Jordan, and Mark Turner spoke in favor of the idea, saying the City needs to do something to bring in additional funds to help with building upkeep, bring in more small businesses, and enhance the downtown area. Gary Carter and Cindy Grimes spoke against it; Carter said even a small tax increase would hurt his sales, and both said the current climate with gas prices and inflation does not lend itself to any tax increase. The council will vote on the matter at its meeting on the 22nd. In the Fairfield City Council meeting proper, action began with the seating Cody Attebery on the council to replace Brett Coale as First Ward Aldermen.
