hopefully go away, the reality for most americans is the reality that they see at the grocery store, the department store, when trying to get a car, if they can get a car. prices are through the roof and the ability that they have to pivot and deal with those price inneeses are limited as they have ever been. today we take a close look at the political and economic fallout of that and why it really clobbered the markets. not the one you think about. i'm talking about technology stocks, big names that are sensitive to inflation. so ignore the dow. a huge fall-off in the nasdaq and the concerns are just this. it could get worse. that's rattling, very rattling. and it could jar any progress that they were hoping for that in washington on a big spending bill. the president insists the build back better bill will cure the ills. chad pergram indicates that that is not happening. chad? >> good afternoon. democrats all but formally pulled the plug on their social spending bill for the year. they won't officially say that. they want president biden to make that call. the bill is not complete and democrats lack the support of joe manchin. some democrats are exhausted by what they call dithering been manchin. >> look, we need to get this done. we have talked, we have talked, we have talked. it's time to put it on the floor and vote. >> reporters have hounded manchin in the halls of congress for weeks especially as democrats apply pressure on manchin to change the filibuster to pass voting rights. >> you want to continue with the way it is, $300 a month for the youngest kids? >> i'm not negotiating with you all? okay? all the questions -- let me go. this is [bleep]. you're [bleep]. okay? i'm done. i'm done. >> thank you. >> inflation is one of the reasons that democrats are struggling to pass the social spending bill, a fox business poll found that 47% of those surveyed believe that president biden's actions are hurting the country when it comes to inflation. 2/3s of americans believe that inflation is imposing a hardship. progressives will be besides themselves if they don't pass this year. cori bush says it's unfair for one senator to block build back better and plus voting rights. neil? >> neil: thanks very much. as i mentioned today, nasdaq swooned about 3%. the big concern for technology stocks, they always run into a buzz saw, the slightest indication that inflation or interest rates are moving up. we got indications that inflation is and interest rates from the federal reserve signs that they're going up to deal with that. so you might have a twin problem. ashley webster says for a long of americans, its not going done well. ashley? >> it is not. especially when it comes to groceries and the meat industry, neil. the biden administration not mincing its words when it comes to the meat industry. essentially labelling it a meat mafia, if you'd like, jacking up prices to maximize profits. it's unclear why that industry has been singled out by the white house. flagrant inflation has seen gas prices rise. propane is up 34%. even rental cars are up 37%. compare that to meat prices. according to the bureau of labor statistics, beef and veal prices have gained 20% the last year. chicken up 9%. pork 14%. jen psaki puts it all down to corporate greed. listen. >> the president, the secretary of agriculture have both spoken to what we have seen as the greed of meat conglomerates. that is an area where people go to the store and they're trying to buy a pound of meat, it is -- the prices are higher. call it corporate greed, sure. call it jacking up prices during a pandemic. >> you know, we contacted the major meat processing companies for a response including tyson, hormel and cargill. all of them referred to us to the north america meat institute that gave us this statement. "is corporate greed driving up meat prices? no. prices are high because of inflation which is driven by labor shortages. the administration should not scapegoat one industry because of their handling of the economy. meat producers say the reason for rising prices goes back to last when covid shut down production plants. that led farmers to scale back their production and when beef demand rebounded, a la bore shortage struck. that led to another reason the drought out west that had caused beef herds to shrink and high costs along the supply chain for fertilizer, packaging materials, you name it. the meat producers says the biden administration should concentrate on fixing the supply chain and stop demonizing their industry. for the prices, they're not going down in the near future. >> neil: thanks, ashley webster. so there's a divide here between the parties, right? you know, democrats are convinced this huge spending plan, the $2 trillion one that says could explode and that will get on top of this. that spending will help with the overall inflation picture. the republicans have the opposite view and the americans stuck in the middle say the spending is compounding the inflation problem. republicans say the more we spend the worse it's going to get. bill haggerty from tennessee. he's in that camp and joins us. senator, we're at a cross roads. both sides have a way to deal with inflation. you say the one way not to deal with it is the spending package that the president is pushing. >> indeed. one party needs to live in reality. you're talking about throwing more fuel on the fire, you will see inflation in record rates that we haven't seen. they're talking about putting more fuel on the fire. you mentioned the $5 trillion spending package. that would be inflationary. look at the policies that they put forward. of course they won't mention the policies that they put forward but pick on the industries -- >> neil: so you don't think the charges -- it began earlier than this going after the meat industry earlier on with a run up in gas and oil prices that there was collusion and they wanted it investigation. and in other areas they're blaming other factors. >> deflection is the art of the deal with this administration. whether it's afghanistan deflecting flame there or inflation. the policies of the biden administration is the greatest cause. they killed energy independence. they have driven oil and gas prices through the roof. every good has to be transported in some way. i talked about this in the spring. they suggested inflation was transitory. i said it's not. the policies that they put in place are inherently inflationary -- >> neil: can i ask you this, senator? if spending isn't going to deal with this problem and make it worse and many agree with you, the only solution is for the federal reserve to deal with it aggressively on its own and that would include rate hikes that they spelled out or coming. do you agree with what the fed is about to do? >> i've been suggesting the fed needs to curtail the balance sheet expansion. they have done the opposite. now they're signalling rate increases. it's not surprising because of the inflation. >> neil: thanks, senator. the celebrating the good senator was talking about, the tapering what has been a long policy of the federal reserve to scoop up mortgage backed securities to forcibly keep rates low. now the fed is taking away that punch bowl and planning to buy fewer and fewer securities so in the next few months it stops buying them altogether. the idea behind that is to let the economy fend for itself. for lee carter, a polster on this, it all depends on how that battle is being led. lee, all good to see you. the president acknowledges what your polls have been showing for quite some time. that inflation is a problem. he didn't start out that way. that is compounding his problem in the polls, isn't it? >> yeah, no doubt about it. now you know eight in ten americans are either extremely or very concerned about inflation. biden started all of this out by saying this is temporary, there's nothing to worry about, this is what we can expect. it's fine. yet americans didn't feel that way from the beginning. more and more people are feeling impacted by it and more and more people are blaming biden for it. i personally blame joe biden for inflation at this point. the fact that he has not taken any responsibility or shown any urgency isn't helping him. the buck stops with him. things need to get better and people are worried about this. >> neil: it's an interesting point. . and you're the expert on this. president presidents diverge from the fears of americans, it doesn't help their cause. when joe biden dismissed the severity of the price pressures, blaming it on the rich and whining about it being transitory, things could change and try to regroup. he has. might be too little too late. i've seen this before even with donald trump in the early dies of the virus. can't blame him at the time not appreciating the magnatude. his initial approach minimizing it hurt him. i'm wondering here if that's what comes back to roost here for this president. minimizing this problem. waving it off. saying it wasn't a problem or blaming others for the problem. >> a number 1 rule that i advise clients and people in general, when you're in the middle of a crisis, people are feeling scared, threatened, unsafe, the number one thing that you must do to make them feel better is to acknowledge their concern. you can't fight it, can't deflect it, can't blame somebody else for it. you have to say i understand. i get where you're coming from. he's never really done that. what he's done instead is saying there's nothing to see here. it's no big deal. it's going to be temporary. it's not my fault. it's my predecessor's fault. it's covid's fault. i'm people's price gouging. it's everybody's fault but his. everybody across the board is feeling this whether it's at the pump, at the store, no matter what, it impacts everybody. he hasn't addressed the magnitude of it. he's saying there's nothing he can do about it. he's the president. the economy is one thing that is a huge measure of the president. in normal times, it's one of the most important things that we look at as a measure of how we're doing. >> you reminded me of this. if you screw something up, say i was wrong. i screwed up. i'm reminded because you have to go back to john f. kennedy after the bay of pigs crisis, a crisis that he inherited. his predecessor said, the harry truman version saying the buck stops with me. his poll numbers went up. we don't see that today. i wonder why politicians have problems acknowledging that people are pretty forgiving of that. >> it's an interesting thing. i think people would be forgiving if he said i got this wrong. here's what i'm going to do to move forward. if he had a three-step action plan. we're a very forgiving country. that's the right thing to do. but of how partisan things are, it's harder. sounds like you're giving weight to the other side or giving us material for an attack ad later. that's a shame. it would go a long way for american people right now to feel better especially going into the holidays. this is tough for the democrats going into the mid-terms. there's so much read meat for the republicans to play with now because people are feeling -- they're not feeling good about the economy or covid and not feeling good about their physical safety with the rise of crime. overall that gives republican as lot of ground to play. >> neil: you're right. as we said on fox business, you know, blame shifting isn't really helpful. except when it comes to weight. i blame a thyroid condition. see how long i can milk that. people see you in person and say wait a minute. very good seeing you, lee. lee was touching on the virus, too and the worries about that. a lot of companies are saying, you know what?
