been a long term concern of some of the grassroots supporters of the conservative party and formally the uk independence party. this is seen as a key issue and the images and reports of what has been happening in the channel have been key. deploying the armed forces in that effort have been something they have really tried to grab attention with and that has all been part of this communications grid, this technical approach that the spin doctors in number 10 take to trying to win across the media and readers by focusing on new policy. we have seen some of that under way already. i think in the coming days the thing that has been missing so far is this clear plan that is urgently needed before the 7th of february before we find out what the new energy price cap will be. where is the cost of living crisis saving grace? that is the key one, we have not seen it on the key one, we have not seen it on the grid yet. that will be very
we really need to look at not necessarily trying to control mother nature but trying to look at the communications grid and the new building codes. there s no reason, for example, that someone who has 100 employees or more doesn t have adequate shelters within 100 yards to get to within the event of an ef 4 or 5 tornado. same thing in illinois with amazon. the tragic thing about amazon is they actually sell on their website the types of shelters that their employees needed to stay safe. so we need to look at communications and building codes moving forward. this will be tens of billions of dollars. we don t want this happening again. neil: tom, thanks very much. we want to switch to the white house where the issue a pleasure, neil. take care. neil: thank you. the issue of crime is coming up
so the destruction actually could have been a lot worse. but what we have behind here is a catastrophic failure of the electrical grid. there is no power anywhere within the city limits of new orleans, other than that that s being generated by outside generators. and it s a real mess. the communications grid has been knocked down, cellular service. at&t completely knocked out. t-mobile has been crippled. verizon seems to be holding on okay. but it s been a real tough time. we ve been driving around. lots of trees down, lots of branches. damage like this not so widespread, but you go to the south and west, and the storm surge was as predicted and caused big problems. and when you say there s a million people, a million customers without power, we had the governor on earlier from louisiana on today, and he

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP): A recreational vehicle parked in the deserted streets of downtown Nashville exploded early Christmas morning, causing widespread communications outages that took down police emergency systems and grounded holiday travel at the city s airport.
Authorities said they believe the blast was intentional.
Police were responding to a report of shots fired Friday (Dec 25) when they encountered the RV blaring a recorded warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes, Metro Nashville police chief John Drake said.
this sort of telecommunications infrastructure that exists in a place that we don t have a lot of control. so if it s not the asteroid it could be a superstorm a flare like that one. power surges. a far greater danger. that s not a matter of, hey, that might happen. that will happen, likely within the next 50 years, and that is going to cause major disruptions in our communications grid. power surges, anything that could wipe out all your pictures, all the family photos that exist only on your computer hard drive, those could be gone within an instant. so at it reminder to back up. most people know they should back up if you back it up to a drive that might be one of the satellites, you re still it doesn t work that way. you re that backing up can you go over that again, the grid around the earth?
