classrooms. many are questioning why. welcome to the lead. i m jake tapper. we start today with our politics lead and that major announcement by president biden about who will succeed supreme court justice stephen breyer when breyer retires at the end of this term. the person i will nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity. that person will be the first black woman ever nominated to the united states supreme court. now, biden says he has not yet made a decision on just who that person will be, but he is going to invite senators from both parties to hear their opinions, their points of view. biden says he expects to choose a nominee before the end of february. as cnn s m.j. lee reports, some have been lobbying the president on just who that nominee should be since back in february, 2021. this is sort of a bittersweet day for me. justice breyer and i go back a long way. reporter: a momentous day for the joe bide
wheels up happened last hour. she is on her way to honduras, as we speak. this is the second or third trip she s taken to address the root causes of the immigration crisis. the other reason she s going to honduras is to support the president-elect at her inauguration ceremony, interesting she is a socialist in the country. honduras is typically conservative, the fact she was elect side interesting. the swearing-in ceremony will happen at 11 a.m. she will hold a meeting with the president, president castro and heading back to dc at 5:20. in the three-hour time span, they will address the root causes of illegal immigration. todd: have you seen an inauguration ceremony? not a lot of work or root cause discussion done there. correct me if i m wrong, carley, another place where border issues are top of mind for the administration, it is called ukraine. they are putting time and energy into the border situation at ukraine, yet kamala harris gets in a plane, flies over our borde

governor, all three were dudes. these dudes. and this was 1967 and 1975 when he was governor, so, maybe that is just par for the course. but when reagan ran for president in 1980, that record came back around and bit him a little bit. all through the 1960s and 70s, believe it or not, the republican party platform, nationally, had explicitly and it through the astley supported the equal rights amendment, the era, the constitutional amendment that would guarantee equal legal rights for all citizens regardless of sex. the equal rights amendment had been kicking around for decades by that point, even for generations by that point. and the republican party, nationally, had said for years on its platform that was explicitly in favor of it. until they picked ronald reagan as their presidential nominee in 1980. reagan was really right when. and he was a culture war kind of conservative. and sticking it to the feminists was exactly the kind of thing that he built his campaign around.
dramatic reading of backstage events at that south carolina debate when jim clyburn convinced joe biden, as a candidate, to pledge that moment that he would appoint a black woman to the supreme court. and we just got confirmation from simone sanders that, indeed, she and other biden advisers told him that day, during debate prep, no, don t do it. there is congressman and other members of the black caucus debate prep day, simone sanders and others were telling biden, no, don t do it. and then, at the debate, congressman clyburn goes to him at the commercial the and says you have to do it. and now we are living the history of the results. both in the fact of his presidency and in anticipation of his nomination. yes. and so, the story of that movie, where the costar, clyburn, will be joining us to get his version of it. in composing my thoughts about this, leading into talking to clyburn tonight, i decided in the interest of time, to leave out the names of the people i
