14 sent to jail for assaulting doctor in Assam s Hojai district | Guwahati News

The accused at a police station in Hojai on Wednesday GUWAHATI: A lower court in Assam s Hojai district, about 170 km from Guwahati, on Wednesday sent seven of the 24 accused arrested in connection with assaulting an on-duty doctor to three-day police custody and 14 to judicial custody. The remaining three, who claimed to be minors, have been sent to a juvenile home. On Tuesday afternoon, a mob assaulted doctor Seuj Kumar Senapati and other staff of the Udali Covid care centre (CCC) and damaged the healthcare facility following the death of a Covid-19 patient identified as Giyasuddin. The attackers alleged negligence by the doctor and his medical team for the fatality.

According to Police media spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, this is the highest number of arrests made in 24 hours since the quarantine rules and regulations were introduced in March 18 2020, Colombo Page reported. He further said that 160 were arrested from Matale, 119 from Nikaweratiya and 98 from Kandy. 19,102 persons have been arrested for the violation of quarantine laws since October 31, last year. Sri Lanka Police said 23,000 police officers were deployed to monitor the movement of the public especially on the roads of Colombo.
