351 arrested for violating quarantine rules; 7000+ arrested since October 2020

COLOMBO (News 1st); 351 people were arrested on Sunday (09) for failing to wear face masks and maintain social distancing, increasing the total number of people arrested for those offenses to 7,316 since 30th October 2020.
Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana speaking to News 1st said special teams were deployed to conduct operations in public premises including beaches and restaurants to inspect if the public is adhering to the quarantine rules and regulations.
Sri Lanka Police will conduct special operations to trace unlawful parties and events, said the Police Spokesperson adding those who violate the laws would be prosecuted under the provisions of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance and the Criminal Law.

COLOMBO (News 1st): A record 617 people were arrested on Friday (May 08) for the violation of quarantine regulations in a 24-hour window, the highest number of such arrests made in a single day, Sri Lanka Police said.
“Sri Lanka Police are conducting continuous quarantine operations across the country. Yesterday (06) we have arrested the highest number of suspects within a period of 24-hours since the 30th of October 2020, to date. Accordingly, we arrested 617 people in connection with the offences of face masks and social distancing,” Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st on Saturday (May 08).
According to the Deputy Police Chief, 6539 people have been arrested so far for the violation of quarantine regulations, since the 30th October 2020, to date.

COLOMBO (News 1st): Sri Lanka Police on Thursday (May 06) arrested a record 436 people for the failure to follow quarantine regulations such as wearing face masks and maintaining social distances.
“Sri Lanka Police are conducting continuous quarantine operations across the country. Yesterday (06) we have arrested 436 suspects in connection with the offences of face masks and social distancing. This is the highest number of suspects we have arrested within a period of 24-hours since the 30th of October 2020, to date,” Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana told News 1st on Friday (May 07).
According to the Deputy Police Chief,
5922 people have been arrested so far, for the violation of quarantine regulations, since 30th October 2020 to date.

COLOMBO (News 1st); Maharagama Urban Council Member Nishantha Wimalachandra who was involved in an ugly brawl at the Urban Council premises on Thursday (06) was arrested by Sri Lanka Police on Friday (07).
He was arrested based on a complaint made by fellow Urban Council Member Savithri Gunasekera.
Thursday’s (06) Maharagama Urban Council meeting turned ugly when a physical altercation broke out between the two Urban Council Members based on a video posted on Facebook.
The video in question was of an incident that had taken place at the Council Members meeting room, several days ago.

Colombo (News 1st); 04 people were arrested for committing an act of financial fraud in April 2021, to the tune of Rs. 43 Million, said Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana on Sunday (02).
The arrests were made by the Criminal Investigations Department following a complaint by a steel manufacturing company that claimed Rs. 43 Mn was withdrawn from their account with a private bank, upon resuming operations after the April holidays, said the Police Spokesperson.
“The suspects had printed a fake checkbook similar to the checkbook used by the complainant,” CID investigations revealed.
The gang had deployed five people dressed in the uniform of the steel manufacturing company with fake cheques to withdraw money from several branches of the private bank, said the Police Spokesperson.
