Having to slow down and singletrack past the scene of this derailment further north near south hayward but certainly it has been frustrating for a lot of riders. That was the station announcement that was played at the fremont station this morning letting the commuters know about major delays on bart. All of this caused by a maintenance truck that derailed on the tracks just south of the south hayward station at about three deck 20 in the morning. These trucks are designed to drive along the tracks and crews on board do repair work. The accident caused damage to the electric third rail and crews are having to repair the third rail and they are also working to get the truck cleared from the tracks. In the meantime bart riders are running late. My boss was really nice about it. She understands because she rides bart. I might not get there on time depending on the delays. And the driver kept going. You could hear the noise. It was crazy. Reporter chris brown says the sound is unbelievable, the cars near marina boulevard. Doesnt look like enough skid marks for how long they were doing it. Very much a shock for us. Reporter lieutenant felix chance says Richmond Police responded to the area after multiple calls. Ended up with an officer suffering serious injury. They found about 40 to 50 cars, some of them actually quite a few of them blocking the roadway and there was smoke all over the place. Just like somebody was doing doughnuts. And spinning their wheels. Reporter new tire marks are in the intersection today. They say the officer was in uniform with others and had a flashlight telling drivers to stop. Tino mcmillan was visiting when he heard the sound. The Police Department arrived and id say five minutes later they had the helicopter up in the air. Reporter the officers have body cameras, a key part of the investigation, as the driver took off.
