Some hope tonight as the first batch of vaccines is about to get shipped to states across the country. It comes just as hospitals continue to be overwhelmed. In the San Joaquin Valley hospitals have run out of icu beds. Here in the bay area were just teetering above that 15 threshold. The county joins marin, San Francisco, contra costa, alameda and santa clara counties. The new restrictions impacts wineries, tasting rooms and much, much more. Heres nbc bay areas christie smith. Tonight the fda has granted emergency approval to an east bay company. Its different, though. This is rapid test that you do at home. Results in 30 minutes. Theres no shipping it to a lab and waiting days for the results. The fda says this is important for getting people tested and to do it faster. All right, jessica, heres how it works. You swab your nose, swirl that swab in a vial, and then put it in a portable device that will tell you if you have covid or not, results within 30 minutes. Heres the catch. Pretty quickly as weve already seen in parts of the state. Take a look at Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley there. A shelter at home order now taking effect there tomorrow night. This all comes as the state surpasses 1. 3 million cases. Yesterday alone the state added more than 25,000 new cases. For much of the bay area theres so much uncertainty right now. One thing businesses do know is that they want this to be the last shutdown. Nbc bay areas tom jensen has more from Contra Costa County. Reporter one last shot at some sort of normalcy at this walnut creek brewery before it has to close down along with a whole host of other Contra Costa County businesses.
