After winning its first tournament of the year at Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, SC last week, the Clemson men’s golf team returns to action Monday through Wednesday, Feb. 19-21, at Shark’s Tooth Golf Club in Panama City, Fla. The Watersound includes some of the most traditional golf programs in the nation. The field includes Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State and host school Florida State.The tournament will be played on the par 72 Shark’s Tooth Golf Club Black course that was designed by Greg Norman and measures 7,246 yards.Clemson will feature a lineup that includes Andrew Swanson and Thomas Higgins. Both players finished in the top four at the Battle at Briar’s Creek, the first time Clemson has had two top four finishers in the same tournament since March of 2022 when Colby Patton and Zack Gordon were co-medalists at the Wake Forest Invitational on Pinehurst #2.Swanson has a 72.00 stroke
Clemson, S.C. Clemson will attempt to defend its team championship at the Wake Forest Invitational at famed Pinehurst #2 golf course in Pinehurst, NC March 6-7. Jordan Byrd’s team won the Wake Forest Invitational last year by 16 shots at the same course, and had both co-medalists.Clemson will be one of 11 schools competing in the event that will feature 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. The field includes ACC teams Wake Forest, Clemson, Virginia, Duke and NC State. The other schools in the field include College of Charleston, SMU, East Tennessee State, Iowa, UNC Greensboro and Northwestern.Clemson will be led by Zack Gordon, who has a terrific track record at the Pinehurst #2 course. In the summer of 2021, the native of Gaffney, SC reached the semifinals of the North-South Amateur. Then last March he was co-medalist with then Clemson teammate Colby Patton at the Wake Forest Invitational. Gordon had rounds of 71-72-69 for a 212 total.Gordon, a fifth-year senior
CLEMSON, S.C. Clemson rising sophomore Andrew Swanson finished tied for 14th at the United States Open Sectional Qualifier at Jupiter, Florida on Monday evening. He missed the cut to advance to the US Open in Boston later this month by just four shots.Swanson had scores of 70-73 for a one-under-par 143 at the 36-hole qualifier held at the Club @ Admiral Cove. The top four players in the 70-player field advanced. Swanson was third among amateurs in the field. Among the players he finished ahead of was Wake Forest All-American Alex Fitzpatrick. He finished just three shots behind noted PGA player Rickie Fowler, who is the number-one alternate with a two-under-par score for the 36 holes.Swanson’s one-under-par 70 in the first round included four birdies. He also had four birdies in the second round, but also had a pair of double bogeys.Swanson qualified for the sectional tournament with a 71 at the local qualifier at DeBordieu Golf Club in Georgetown, S.C. back in May. COLUMBUS, Ohio Clemson finished four shots short of qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament on Wednesday after shooting a final round seven over par 291 at the NCAA Columbus Regional. The Tigers finished in a tie for sixth place, just one place shy of the needed top five finish to advance to the national tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona later this month. Clemson was in fourth place entering the final round, but there was a logjam of teams in contention entering the day and throughout the final round on the par 71 Ohio State University Course. Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech were co-champions of the regional with scores of 10-under-par 842. Ohio State took advantage of its home course to finish third with a score of 856. Arkansas was fourth with a seven over par score of 859 and East Tennessee State was the final qualifier with an 862 score. Clemson was tied for sixth at 14-over-par 866 with San Francisco. DUBLIN, Ohio Freshman Kian Rose fired an even-par 71 on Monday to lead the Clemson golf team to a 289 team score and a fourth-place standing after the first round of the NCAA Columbus Regional at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.The 13 teams will play 18 holes and Tuesday and Wednesday, as well. After 54 holes, the top five teams in the standings will advance to the NCAA National Tournament at the Grayhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona.Oklahoma State, ranked second in the nation to rival Oklahoma, has a six-shot lead after the first round over East Tennessee State. San Francisco, who is not ranked among the top 50 schools in the nation, is third at 288, four-over-par.
