Were glad to have you today and happy about our annual reading festival and this wonderful turnout as well. Especially on our 75th 75th anniversary which were celebrating june 30th. I think that president roosevelt would be quite pleased to see everyone and to see this turnout and to know that his library, as he intended, would be used torii search and scholarship to continue to explore the issues of his era, and especially how they still have an impact today on political and social life. No question that on both fronts there were some pretty horrific battles. Yes, sir. Playing into macarthur with the savior complex, i shall return as opposed to week, was there any discussion . Theres a whole army behind us, who are you . I think that goes to the core of douglas macarthur. There was a suggestion, after he said eyes shall return, there was a suggestion by fdr and marshall, wouldnt it be great if we could say we shall return. Thats you sounds a lot more collaborative, but again, thats not macarthurs personality. To his credit, he took it personally that he would go back and do it. It was a personal charge to him. To your point earlier, about operations and things, you have to remember that mcarthurs father in the civil war which is where i begin the the book, because i think its instructive and a lot of people have written about it but its instructive that his father really leads this great charge up Missionary Ridge during the civil war and it may not have been the great

The second part part of it is that roosevelt is already working in the depths of the depression to be given to prepare the country for some level of mobilization for world war ii. It is great to have a conservative republican leading guy go up to the hill as army chief of staff and take some of the flak when saying that our military budget needs to be increased. To note note the military budget was a 1935 . Total military budget for the army part, it was Something Like 400,000. It is rather incredible in that. I think there there were reasons to keep him around. Theres no indication to try to get rid of him . Im sure sitting in the house not too far from here there are many times that roosevelt wanted to get rid of macarthur. There are always reasons why he didnt. Ill be glad to sign books.
