new developments overnight in the case involving secretary of commerce john bryson. and his two car crashes. he went back to work yesterday but not today. find out why, coming up in this hour of cnn. welcome to "early start," i'm zoraida sambolin. >> i'm ashleigh banfield. we're bringing you the news from "a" to "z." it is 5:00 on the dot in the east. let's start with this, shall we? victim number one ready to take the stand today in jerry sandusky child abuse sex trial. today's witness was just 11 or 12 years old when he first met the penn state assistant football coach. it was his accusations that triggered this criminal investigation leading to jerry sandusky's arrest. susan candiotti is live in bellefonte, pennsylvania this morning, she's been covering this case. incredible stories coming out in court. i don't know if it can get any worse. his story is set to come out in court today. what is the story of victim number one following yesterday's story of victim number four? >> reporter: well, this is going to be quite a day two for the jurors, isn't it, after hearing so much graphic detail. here's what we know about alleged victim number one, according to what he has told a grand jury. he said he was sexually assaulted, including being raped and molested by jerry sandusky at least 20 times. and that many of these assaults took place, both at jerry sandusky's home and at his own high school. we also know that he said that he was forced to transfer from his high school after the allegations became known, because he was getting fallout and flack not only from students but also from some parents who are supporters of jerry sandusky. and this young man, now only 18 years old, just graduated from high school last week, from a new high school, and he is already receiving track scholarship offers from a few colleges, ashleigh. >> susan, in opening statements, the defense attorney has his work cut out for him in this. sometimes there is strength in numbers. there are a lot of numbers, ten victims, eight expected to testify. eight smiling faces of young boys put up as photographs in the front of that courtroom. that is powerful stuff. what exactly is the defense saying is going to be their strongest argument in trying to combat story after story after story of filth? >> well, it's really going to be a tough road ahead. they acknowledged in court yesterday that there is a tidal wave of accusations in front of this grand jury. what they have been trying to do is raise the specter, possibility that all of these accusers are liars. they are also trying to point out that jerry sandusky and hinting that you might even hear from him in his own words say i didn't do it, that he's always proclaimed his innocence. and perhaps they could be referring to by hearing him in his own words some of those -- a couple of interviews he did in "the new york times," possibly on nbc news, in which he says i was attracted to boys but not sexually. ashleigh? >> those are the kinds of words that do come back to haunt you in a court case, regardless of if you take the stand or not. thank you. the trial kicks off at 9:00 eastern. we'll bring you live updates throughout the day right here on cnn. happening now in colorado, hundreds of firefighters are battling a deadly wildfire that's burning out of control. the high park fire near ft. collins is growing exponentially, in just a few days wiping out 41,000 acres. it's blame for at least one death. more than 100 structures have been destroyed as well. and thousands have been forced to leave their homes. officials say the hope for containment right now is tenuous. alexandra steele is in for rob marciano. what can you tell us about this? >> the hope for containment is zero right now. let's talk about how the weather will help or exacerbate in this. lightning struck and ignited this fire early on saturday morning. as zoraida said it claimed over 41,000 acres. also yesterday, a wind shift and with this rugged terrain there are a lot of shifts in the wind. a wind shift pushed this fire in unto itself which was good, as opposed for allowing more ground yesterday. it's moving quite rapidly. 20 to 40 feet per minute, which is fast for a growing fire. containment weather, what we need, what we need are cooler temperatures, calmer winds and higher humidity. are we going to get that? unfortunately we're not going to get that. yesterday the temperatures were the lowest they're going to be, in the upper 60s. a cold front pass, dropped the temperatures. now we'll watch the temperatures warm up. in terms of the wind we'll see constant winds between 5 and 15 miles per hour. gusts could be higher than that. today's highs will be in the low 80s. unfortunately, low relative humidity. the problem, guys, will be as we head toward tomorrow. temperatures rebound to 91 degrees. the average high is 83. warmer than average tomorrow and the winds still once again will be a factor. >> all right, alexandra steele, thanks very much for that. and this just in, we have just learned that the police who were in montgomery, alabama, surrounding that house where they believed desmonte leonard was holed up have decided to leave that location. it's not clear why they would have pulled out from that standoff, it seemed. leonard is the suspect in a deadly shooting spree near auburn university. he's accused of killing three people, two of them former auburn football players at an offcampus party over the weekend. leonard has been the target of an all-out manhunt. two other men were arrested for hindering that investigation. new this morning, the obama administration announcing secretary of commerce john bryson will take a medical leave of absence as he undergoes tests and evaluations. bryson is under investigation for possible felony hit and run. he was found unconscious by police in san gabriel, california, on saturday. officers say he hit two cars. the white house says bryson was alone. he had a seizure but it's not clear when. the battle for gabrielle giffords house seat is to be decided today in a special election in arizona. giffords former aide ron barber is facing a tough challenge from republican jessie kelly. he's backed by the tea party. barber was wound in the 2011 shooting rampage that critically injured giffords and killed six other people. this just in. gas prices rising for the first time in 26 days. the national average is now 3.54. for a gallon of unleaded, that's up 0.2 cent. coming up next, they are hockey royalty, through and through, not just in name. the l.a. kings, oh, yeah, savoring their first ever stanley cup victory. finishing off new jersey devils in wicked bloody style. we are going to take you live to los angeles. to the morning after celebration. ♪ we are the champions clear, huh? [ yawning sound ] 11 minutes past the hour. welcome back to "early start." it was a long time coming but this morning, the kings of los angeles are kings of the national hockey league. they routed the new jersey devils 6-1 to win the nhl stanley cup in six games. it is the kings first stanley cup in their 45-year history. the victory setting off a wild celebration which actually may still be going on. cnn's paul vercammen is live in los angeles for us, not just the first time nhl champions but the first eighth seeded playoff team to win the league title as well. did the people there just absolutely lose their minds. >> yes, they did, zoraida. right now are. the celebration continues. it is closing time here in los angeles. all these kings fans raising their glasses to a team that was indeed a cinderella. the players had grown out those beards that hockey players like to grow during the stanley cup playoffs. you grow the beard, don't shave it until you lose. a lot of kings fans growing out beards. one wife confessed she can't wait until her husband shaves off his hockey beard. we talked to another long-suffering kings fan. he had been working on his hockey stanley cup beard for quite a while. >> i grew this beard for the last two years. and now i get to finally shave it off because we won it, baby. it's the best. it's the best city for hockey, best city for hockey! >> this is what we live for. this is our generation. this is what we live for! >> and these kings fans so euphoric, they're often overshadowed by the lakers and all that purple and gold. the staples center, they share the building with the lakers and clippers. black is the new black here in l.a. a lot of the fans are wearing the kings black zoraida. >> there were no expectations of this team. where did the magic come from and will it continue? >> well, i think part of the magic was just this absolutely calm coach, mr. sutter, who comes from a hockey family. he kept this team on track. they did not lose their focus throughout the playoffs. they're an extremely young team. they're a team that has everybody under contract. it's likely the kings could have some future celebrations in the year to come. >> paul vercammen live in los angeles. thank you so much. we appreciate it. it's now 13 minutes past 5:00 on the east coast. victim number one is set to take the stand this morning in the jerry sandusky trial. according to grand jury reports, it was his accusations that first triggered a criminal investigation into the former penn state football coach. yesterday a 28-year-old man known as victim number four kicked off the testimony in this case and told the court that sandusky began showering him with after-exercise sessions when he was about 13 years old and inappropriate touching, he says, began soon after that. we want to warn you, the next video you're about to see is graphic. surveillance video of a woman doused in gas and set on fire. it happened at a 7-eleven in boiten beach, florida. the suspect poured gasoline on the mother of his 4-year-old son after pulling her out of a convenience store. she tried to run away but he chased her with a knife and then ignited her. the suspect is behind bars this morning, facing attempted first degree murder charges. the woman is expected to survive. >> surveillance video absolutely dramatic this morning. this happened in a kentucky courtroom as an inmate tried to escape custody, rushing a guard. but ended up pushing himself and the deputy into a live courtroom. he only made it about 20 feet before he was tackled. that suspect is now facing attempted escape and assault charges, too. the kkk wants to adopt a highway in georgia. the white supremacist group applying to the state transportation department to clean a one mile stretch of road in the appalachian mountains near the north carolina border. officials are said to be consulting with the state attorney general on this request. a similar request in missouri said off a legal battle that went all the way to the supreme court. the missouri department of transportation eventually kicked the kkk out of the program because members were not picking up the trash as agreed. the justice department is moving ahead with plans to sue the state of florida to stop officials there from purging the voter roles. the governor, rick scott, wants all noneligible residents barred from the voting booths. it can remove the noneligible voters but they're arguing that florida's program is failing to follow the proper legal standards to do so. and florida's governor, rick scott, says up to 100,000 names need to be purged from his state's rolls. we'll ask him about that. he'll join us live in the 8:00 hour of "starting point." bob wood ward and carl bernstein, all coming together last night at an event sponsored by "the washington post." you'll remember five men broke into democratic offices at the watergate hotel and office building and were caught. the scandal brought down president nixon and woodward said to this day he's convinced nixon never understood what the presidency was really about. tough words this many years later, too. 17 minutes now past 5:00 on the east coast. we're getting an early read at the local news making national headlines. this is a weird one. a west virginia man traveling the country to write a book about kindness in america. you know what happens? he gets shot. kindness in america, he gets shot by a random attacker. it's the billings gazette reporting this story. he approached a pickup truck, thinking the driver was offering him a ride. again, the book is about kindness. instead, the driver pulled out a gun, shot him in the arm. this does have somewhat of a happy ending. they found the guy, arrested the suspect. 52-year-old lloyd danielson is his name. they do believe that he was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. >> wow. 90% of teachers in chicago voting to authorize the first strike in 25 years. if their union cannot reach a deal on a contract this summer. [ male announcer ] now citi thankyou visa card holders can combine the thankyou points they've earned and get even greater rewards. ♪ we are minding your business. u.s. stock futures indicating markets will start the day with a bounce this morning. all that euphoria rapidly fizzled at the end of trading yesterday. >> the dow, nasdaq, s&p 500 all down more than 1%, the dow dropping 145 points. alison kosik is in for christine romans today. i hate seeing those triple red arrows pointing down. it was a bit of a weird one. >> the dow started off strong, up 96, 100 points. throughout the day you saw stocks fall into the red. spain accepted a bailout deal, a rescue package for its banks. wall street said great, we'll get this out of the way. then they had time to process it, investors said you know what, we have bigger fish to fry. we're worried more about what's going to happen over weekend. on sunday greece will be holding its elections. that is really what wall street is focused on. also the fed issette maoing next week. the way wall street sees it, as far as spain goes, there's no growth plan or structural reform. this is a narrow solution and we'll move on. >> that's why you saw stocks fall. i feel like a broken record, guess and spain causing all sorts of problems. there's a reason why day-to-day, this very strong story that doesn't change a whole lot affects us. >> you're seeing each market move on news out of europe. we're in the summer months as well, a lot of investors are sitting back, not getting into the game, meaning not trading. when you have fewer people trading, that causes more volatility. that's why the last half hour of trading yesterday you saw stocks drop almost 100 points in that half hour. >> it's just those aggressive people making shifts. >> yes. >> fewer people can make a bigger swing in the market. >> exactly. >> you talk about recession and your money. for the average american, kind of bad news. >> we all know the recession was bad. we don't need a report to tell us, though. you look at the numbers and they're stunning. the typical american family last almost 40% of its wealth between 2007 and 2010, that was during the great recession. that's almost half of what they're worth. what they wound up doing is putting their media net worth, assets minus liabilities, put that back to a level that we haven't seen since the 1990s. meaning the recession wiped away all of those years of savings and investments for these families. this report says that media net worth, the point that's smack dab in the middle of those richer and who are poorer fell to $77,300 in 2010 from 126,000 in 2007. why did this happen? because the housing market collapsed. you saw the value of your home drop. massive layoffs took away your income. if you did have a job, your income also dropped. this affected everybody, young and old, educated, not educated, if you have kids or didn't have kids. on a brighter note, though, we're seeing the data show americans' net worth has gone back up since 2010. people are finding work again. housing values are slowly coming back. it still hurts. it will take a while to get back up to where you were pr pre-recession. >> thank you. by the way, president obama will not be outdone. he is picking up the pace in the race for campaign cash. wait until you hear the ground that he is covering today. whew! marathon of money, let's just say. that's coming up. no! but, i'm about to change that. ♪ every little baby wants 50% more cash... ♪ phhht! fine, you try. [ male announcer ] wells fargo. with you when you're ready to move. jerry sandusky accused of molesting several boys in his care faces victim number one today in court after victim number four yesterday. we're going to go live to pennsylvania, straight ahead. plus, years of scientific research destroyed at harvard after a freezer goes on the fritz, damaging a fragile collection of human brains used to study autism. and how one woman helped a young terminally ill man realize his dying wish from thousands of miles away. good morning, everyone. welcome back to "early start," i'm ashleigh banfield. >> and i'm zoraida sambolin. we're happy you're with us this morning. it's 30 minutes past the hour here. let's get you started. in just a few hours, a man known as victim number one will take the stand in the jerry sandusky child sex abuse trial. according to grand jury reports, it was victim number one's accusations that convinced police to investigate the former penn state football coach. yesterday a 28-year-old man known as victim number four testified sandusky began showering with him after exercise sessions when he was just 13 years old and inappropriate touching began soon after that. happening right now, police in alabama are leaving a house in montgomery they've been surrounding since yesterday afternoon. auburn shooting suspect desmonte leonard was thought to be hiding inside that house. it is not exactly clear why law enforcement have decided to leave that location. the 22-year-old leonard is wanted for allegedly killing three people and wounding three others at a party near the auburn campus over the weekend. two of those killed were former auburn football players, two other men have been arrested on charges that they hindered the investigation. a shocking story out of texas raising some serious legal questions. people in the small town of shiner is voicing their support for a father who police say beat a man to death after allegedly catching him molesting his 4-year-old daughter. >> in the defense of her, trying to get her away from him, he struck the individual in the head several times. >> i don't think he should be arrested for it. i don't think any charges should be filed. >> if somebody abused my grandchild, like he did, i think he deserved everything he got. >> especially 4 years old. that's terrible. >> yes. >> the sheriff says the little girl suffered mental trauma but is physically okay. the father has not been arrested. the sheriff says a grand jury will decide if the father will be charged in this case. a huge blow to autism researchers, a freezer malfunctioning at harvard affiliated hospital damaged a third of the world's largest collection of brain samples used to study autism. officials say the freezer's temperatures rose too high. the alarms that were supposed to go off did not do so. the researchers say those damaged brain samples were a, quote, priceless collection. investigators say foul play cannot be ruled out. >> 33 minutes past the hour. president obama and mitt romney are hitting the trail this morning. the money trail. it is all about infusing the campaigns with fresh cash today. the president is scheduled to attend six different fund-raisers in baltimore and philadelphia while romney's traveling to private fund-raisers in orlando, florida, and franklin, tennessee. the ka-ching, cnn political editor paul steinhauser is live in washington this morning. did you hear that? >> i like the sound effects and the visual. you are very classy here. >> yes, we are, all for you. how much money is the president expected to raise tonight. the rnc 76 million in may, the dnc, 60 million. they have catching up to do. >> yes. look at that. we knew mitt romney was going to start raising a lot of money once the primaries are over. the obama campaign knew it was well. more than 16 million more by obama and the dnc in may. that's one of the reasons you see the president stepping up the fund-raising. mitt romney is raising money, trying to get their supporters to step it up here. why does all this matter? the president, he broke all records when he was senator obama four years ago, raised around $750 million, broke all records and outraised and outspent john mccain by about 3-1. will be a different story line this time around. you can see with the figures in may. part of this is also the outside money from the superpacs. the republican superpacs are raising and spending more money. we'll have a much more even campaign cash battle. >> it is so much money it makes your head spin. >> special election in arizona today for congresswoman gabby giffords. do the republicans have a shot at picking up the seat? >> they very much do so. this is arizona in the southeastern part of the state. it includes tucson. it's a district that leans slightly towards republicans. remember, giffords stepped down in january one year after surviving that assassination attempt. so who's running for her seat? that's the man on the right doing it, ron barber. he was a former aide of hers. he was also injured in sha shooting. he is facing off against a former marine, jesse kelly who narrowly lost to gabrielle giffords. democrats want to keep it in party hands. democrats need 25 seats zoraida in november, to pick up 25 seats from the republicans if they want to win back control of the house of representatives. >> there's one more thing i want to talk about. secretary of state hillary clinton, will she or won't she in 2016? she told some college girls, be open to opportunities. what does that mean? >> a lot of people are reading into the tea leaves here. wellesley, that's where she graduated from many years ago. will she run in 2016? well, the big news out of apple's annual developer's conference, this week has nothing to do with really laptops or iphones or ipads. instead, they're mapping out war plans against google, getting into the driver's seat, too. my next guest calls this the start of a truly thermonuclear war. we're talking about this not just because of the coolness factor but a recent survey found that 55 million homes, that's a majority of the households in america by the way have at least one apple product. and about a third have two or more apple products. holy-moly. we have a senior editor and business insider. he joins us live. a thermonuclear war you call it. >> that is what he told his biographer that is what they're going to google. >> is this all about trying to bury google completely or chip into some of the market share? >> it's not about market share. she don't have as much. it is about trying to change the way we use google. >> how? what exactly did the developments that were released yesterday, who are they going to do to try to put google in our rearview mirror? >> way we used the web until now, you go online, use your browser and you use the search bar, search google and go to the websites. apple has implemented new maps on their mobile stuff, ipad and iphone. in maps you'll have yelp integration. instead of going to google for a local restaurant, you search on the map. you get all kinds of information. then there's siri, about asking questions and getting answers. what is google? you ask questions, you get answers. siri is still early. >> yesterday there were announcements on improvements to siri, right? >> you'll be able to ask for sports scores and make reservations for local restaurants. >> i thought you already could. >> i think it's better. >> the language recognition is better. >> it's a beta product. they have to have people talking to it and that's how it will improve. >> it's not so much apple wants to wipe out searching, because that's not going to happen, they just want you to search in their way. >> they want to de-emphasize the web. they want it to be about applications that sit on the phone and the ipad. you're going to the maps application, the siri application. you're using the native apps and de-emphasizing the web. >> there was a partnership announced between facebook and apple as well. >> right. that will be integrated. everything on facebook will be tighter integration, you can post different things. which is bad for google because it's not exactly on speaking terms with facebook. >> tell me if i'm a facebook user and not a facebook fanatic, how am i going to see changes? what's going to be different for me? >> if you're not a fanatic, it won't be huge for you. it will be easier to share updates, status, those kind of things. >> here i am perhaps asking too much. i tend to think because we've had the iphone and ipad, where's my next big gadget, like apple tv, why aren't you delivering something every two years to me? >> exactly. if you're patient you might get the apple television. it's supposedly coming at the end of the year or early next year. this company just came out with the ipad in 2010. you see them everywhere. >> they just came out with the ipad in -- >> 2010. >> it feels like it's been part of our life forever. >> it does. it's amazing. if you look at the stats of that thing, it's incredible how quickly the adoption and how quickly it's taken off. >> it's good to see you. thanks for bringing that to us. see you at the next conference. zoraida, back to you. 46 minutes past the hour. let's get you up to date. victim number one will be taking the witness stand this morning, coming face-to-face with jerry sandusky. this is the witness whose allegation triggered the investigation into the former penn state football coach. yesterday, witness number four testified sandusky lured him into the shower when he was just 13 years ole and began touching him inappropriately. police in ohio says a woman who was found stabbed to death over the weekend was killed by her ex-husband. candice roberts with be a mother of three was picking up two of her children at her former husband's home on sunday. she never made it out alive. jeremy roberts confessing to the crime in his 911 call to cops. >> what did you do? >> she's covered in a blanket, you guys will see. >> do you have any weapons there? >> the only one is outside with her. >> what was it? >> it was a knife. >> candice roberts leaves behind a 16-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 13 and 4. >> more than 30 years later, a coroner has finally ruled that a di dingo really did take baby azaria in a famous case out of australia. she was taken and killed by a dingo during a family camping trip. prosecutors at first blamed azaria's mother and she was convicted of murder. that conviction was later overturned and family says they are relieved by this final ruling. a hearing on discrimination in the workplace against gay, bisexual and transgender americans gets in are way this morning. they'll be debating the employment nondiscrimination act, a bill that would advance workplace equality for gay and transgender employees while giving religious organizations an exemption. that would allow them to take sexual orientation into account when hiring. we've all heard it, not getting enough sleep is bad for your health. now according to a new study, if you get fewer than six hours of sleep every night, you could be increasing your risk for stroke, even if you're otherwise healthy. researchers at the university of alabama have found that early symptoms of stroke like numbness down one side of the body, vision loss, dizziness or that inability to express one's self could be associated with -- with -- i don't know -- what is it? >> reporter: good morning, zoraida, he's now 18 years old and this is a young man who told the grand jury he was assaulted at least 20 times sexually by jerry sandusky and these alleged attacks happened not only at sandusky's home but even in his own high school. in fact, he was even interrupted one time by a coach who saw them late at night in one of the rooms, the sports rooms at the high school. this is a young man who once the allegations became known, had to transfer out of the school because he was being bullied by other students. he was also getting fallout and flak from some parents who believed in jerry sandusky and eventually this young man went on to graduate just this past weekend from another high school. he's expected to get into graphic detail this morning. >> have you been there in the courtroom? >> reporter: yes. >> and so tell us about the folks that are testifying and, you know, is it difficult for them to talk about this? >> reporter: well, it's been really interesting to watch with alleged victim number 4 on the stand yesterday, on monday, the very first day, the jury isn't showing any signs, they are keeping expressless as they listen to the graphic testimony but it's very dramatic and compelling. it was interesting to see how cooley and calmly the victim answered the questions and went through step by step. we heard creepy things, for example, when the witness testified about being in the showers time and again with jerry sandusky and then soaping each other up along with sexual assaults and how they car resed each other, jerry sandusky, he said, made him do this. and how he was able to come back when jerry sandusky's defense attorney asked him a pointed question, why didn't you stop this? the witness testified, you know, i didn't know what to do. i was scared and i was getting a lot of gifts from jerry sandusky. then turned the question around, he said, i feel guilty i didn't stop this sooner, maybe i could have prevented other children from being attacked. >> we heard about some letters that jerry sandusky had written to some of his alleged victims and we understand that there's a psychology that's going to present testimony about his tree onic personality disorder as a defense. can you tell us about that? >> reporter: well, we did hear about that, not sure whether we'll hear that testimony. this was a motion that was filed by the defense yesterday so the jury isn't aware of this. they are saying they might bring this up. this is a disorder described by the national institute of health of someone who says a lot of things to draw attention to themselves. it's not clear how this would play into the defense in terms if they are trying to explain away alleged sexual assaults. whether the judge will allow this kind of testimony is another thing. we'll have to see. >> susan candiotti live in pennsylvania, thank you very much. the trial kicks back up at 9:00 eastern. we'll bring you live updates on the trial throughout the day here on cnn. four minutes past 6:00, fire crews fighting so far what's been a losing battle in northern california. it's called the high park fire near fort collins and it's grown in just the past few days and now covering more than 64 square miles. more than 100 structures have now been destroyed in this fire. thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes. authorities say the fire is blamed for at least one person's death. alexandra steele is in for rob marciano. we've been talking about the weather conditions, the worst cocktail for fires. >> unfortunately it's going to get worse. temperatures are going to warm even further. we do know that lightning strike -- a lightning strike early saturday morning ig nighted this fire. it's claimed 41,000 acres. yesterday in this kind of terrain, rug he had terrain on the front range, there is a lot of shifting of winds in terms of direction. yesterday the wind kind of went in on itself and unfortunately that was good news for quite some time, instead of allowing more territory to get burned, it moved in on itself. that was good news yesterday for a bit of time with the wind shifting. it's moving 20 to 40 feet per minute, really quite fast for a fire. what they are hoping for in terms of weather conditions, cooler temperatures, calmer winds and higher humidity. what they are going to get? not cooler conditions. yesterday was the coolest day. temperatures warming up into the low 80s and tomorrow warming into the 90s, east winds 16 miles per hour but we will see gusts to 30. relative humidity pretty good, less than 20%. unfortunately, warmer and windier than it was yesterday. >> tough for those firefighters. thank you so much. happening right now, authorities in alabama suddenly leaving a home in montgomery they surrounded since yesterday. it is believed desmonte leonard was hold up inside. he has been the target of an intense manhunt since the shootings at an off campus party. two killed were former auburn football players. police arrested two other men on charges of hindering the investigation. the obama administration announcing john bryson is going to take a medical leave of absence as he undergoes test and investigations. he is under investigation for possible felony hit-and-run. he was found unconscious by police in san gabriel california. the officers say he hit two cars. the white house says bryson was alone and suffered a seizure but it's not clear when. the justice department moving ahead with plans to sue the state of florida to stop officials there from purging the voter rolls. florida's republican governor rick scott wants all noneligible residents barred from voting booths. they argue the florida program fails to follow proper legal standards. rick scott says up to 100,000 names need to be purged from his state's rolls. we ask him about that live on the 8:00 hour on starting point. the battle for the house seat is set to be decided today. her former aide, ron barber is facing a tough challenge from jesse kelly who is an exmarine and iraq war veteran and backed by the tea party. barber was wounded in the rampage that critically injured gabrielle giffords and killed six other people. >> it's good to be the king, right? >> reporter: i haven't seen it yet. but they are off at the various celebrations and who knows where they are all over l.a. i had a funny comment, some women would look at me and say i can't wait for this moment. my husband will finally shave his beard. a lot of fans had grown beards out here. the razors will be out in l.a. tomorrow. >> it's a great time to be there. terrific moment in hockey history. can't wait to see some comment from wayne gretzky about this. maybe he's so choked up he couldn't talk until now. paul, nice to see you. >> victim number 1 takes the stand in the jerry sandusky trial. it was this alleged victim's accusations that first triggered a criminal investigation into the former penn state football coach. yesterday a 28-year-old man known as victim number four kicked off testimony in the case and told the court sandusky began showering with him after exercise sessions when he was just 13 years old and inappropriate touching began soon after that. a board of supervisors in california has 60 days to decide how it's going to replace an elected water agency official who starred in this video. that man resigned after the video surfaced showing him whipping his son with a belt during a game of catch. a neighbor shot the video claiming that sanchez started hitting the boy after he dropped the ball. sanchez' resignation was announced yesterday and a special meeting is scheduled for 11:00 local time today. check out this surveillance video. dramatic moments in a kentucky courtroom as an inmate tried to escape custody, rushing a guard only to push himself and the deputy into a live courtroom. he only made it about 20 feet before he was tackled. the suspect is facing attempted escape and assault charges. the whereabouts of four afghan women who disappeared during a trip to the united states are still unknown. they were part of a group of more than 20 women attending a program on democracy at the university of virginia. they went missing last week. police believe the women left the program intentionally. three, two, one, splashdown? [ male announcer ] ocuvite. help protect your eye health. president obama out with a new radio ad targeting black voters. we'll play it for you straight ahead. years of scientist research destroyed at a harvard research center after a freezer goes on the fritz damaging a fragile collection of human brain samples used to study autism. you're not special. that came from a high school teacher giving a commencement speech. we're going to hear from him coming this hour on cnn. >> i can't wait. i can't wait either. i read the entire speech though so i kind of get it now. when you get a small sampling, you jump to conclusions. >> isn't that the story of our life. you always need to read the layers. >> and he will be here to explain. welcome back to "early start", i'm zoraida sambolin. >> 31 minutes past 6:00 on the east coast. later this morning, victim number one takes the stand in the jerry sandusky trial. according to grand jury reports rs it was victim one's accusations that convinced police to investigate the former penn state coach in the first place. yesterday a 28-year-old man known as victim number four testified sandusky began showering with him after exercise sessions when he was just 13 years old and inappropriate touching began soon after that. >> happening right now, police in alabama leaving a house in montgomery that they've surrounded since yesterday afternoon. awe born shooting suspect desmonte leonard thought to be hiding inside. but it's not clear why the police decided to pull out. leonard is accused of wounding people and killing three. two were auburn football players. a story from texas raising serious legal questions. people in the town of shiner are voicing their support for police say beat a man to death after kauching a man molesting his 4-year-old daughter. >> in defense of her, he struck the individual in the head several times. >> i don't think he should be arrested for it. i don't think any charges should be filed. >> if somebody abused my grandchild like he did, he deserved everything he got. >> especially 4 years old, that's terrible. >> yes. >> the sheriff says the little girl suffered mental trauma but she is physically okay. the father has not been arrested. the sheriff says a grand jury will decide if the father will be charged in this case. president obama and mitt romney are preparing to hit the trail this morning. it is the money trail to be exact. it's all about gathering up campaign cash today. the president is scheduled to attend six different fundraisers in baltimore, and in philadelphia. mitt romney is traveling to private fundraisers in orlando, florida, and franklin, tennessee. and in case you weren't sure, that's what the cash register sound is for. paul is live in washington this morning. if you look at the may numbers, paul, mitt romney outdid -- you talk about president obama's incredible ability to raise money, but may, it was in romney's column. >> it sure was. nice sound effects there. nice graphics. nice touch. look at the may numbers. this is fascinating, in may the president was outraised by mitt romney over $16 million. that is a lot of money. $76.8 million raised by romney and the rnc and the president and dnc raising $60 million. and i think that may be one of the reasons you see the president stepping it up it seems. he has six fundraisers in baltimore and philadelphia. $3.6 million expected to be raised. romney fund raising last night and fund raising as well today. four years ago, president obama then senator obama broke all records raising $750 million, more than three times the amount john mccain raised. campaign cash is crucial. this time we expect the super pacs to outraise and spend the democrats. money is so crucial and it buys ad time and get out the vote efforts. >> let's talk about the special election in arizona to replace gabrielle giffords. >> you remember gabrielle giffords in january stepped down after a year earlier surviving an assassination attempt. now the man on the right, ron barber, a former aide of giffords was also injured in the january of 2011 shooting and running in the special election to succeed her. facing off against jesse kelly who narrowly lost to giffords in the 2010 election. remember, the big picture in november, democrats need 25 seats and 25-seat pickup to win back control of the house of representatives. >> for whiplash effect, i want to scoot back to the presidential race and campaign. there's a brand-new radio ad. the president out with the first radio ad targeting black voters specifically. i want to take a listen and ask you about it on the other side. >> four years ago, we made history. now it's time to move forward and finish what we started together. we have to show the president, we have his back. ♪ >> i like the music soundtrack, it's pretty cool. if you look at the polls from 2008, he had overwhelming support from the black community. what is it looking like this time around? >> exit polls from 2008, you're right, the president did make history, the first african-american to win, 95% of the african-american vote went to senator obama. 4% went to senator mccain. what does it look like now? this is the latest breakdown from gallop's numbers. not as overwhelming, almost 9 in 10 african-americans say they'll vote for the president and 6% for romney. they want to make sure that african-americans are in anywhere camp and they get out to the polls in november. their vote could be crucial in close battle ground states. in comparison, the president is already going out with three rounds of tv ads for latino voters which they think could be much more up in the air. just as comparison there, they've gone out with three specific rounds of tv ads focused on latino voters. >> not surprising there would be this ad. 87 to 6 is overwhelming no matter whether there's a slip or not. always good to see you. thanks so much. 37 minutes past the hour, huge blow to autism researchers, a freezer malfunctioned the harvard's brain bank damaging a third of the world's largest collection of brain samples used to study autism. the freezer's temperatures rose too high and alarms that were supposeded to go off did not sound. the damaged brain samples were a priceless collection investigators say foul play cannot be ruled out. one eye on the flames and the other on the weather. trying to save lives and homes in colorado. the latest coming up. >> no, no, my goal was to remind them that a commencement is a beginning. when they leave there they are off into the world where everyone starts from the same starting line. so often if a kid is led to believe he's special with that comes expectations and with expectations comes pressure to succeed. kids know who they are and know what their passions are. let's leave them alone and let them be free and determine their own path. >> i want to play the end of your speech which i think is important to hear before we continue the dialogue here. >> self-lessness is the best thing you can do for yourself. the sweetest joys of life then come only with recognition that you're not special. because everyone is. congratulations. good luck, make for yourselves please for your sake and others, extraordinary lives. >> i started by saying not a lot of people were happy about this. i'm a mom and i know you're a father as well. often times the world does not prop our children up, they tear them down. do you think some people criticized you because of that? >> perhaps. most of the criticism i've got in my opinion has been reacting to lines from the speech taken out of context. if they had the interest to read the whole speech or patience to read the whole speech, they would see my point is that if it's an examination of the concept of specialness. it's like garrison keeler's nation, that everyone is above average. that merely changes the definition of average. >> you've been a teacher for 26 years. why do you think it was -- >> i have, yeah. >> why do you think it was important for kids to hear the message?
