As Americans anxiously watch the spread of coronavirus variants that were first identified in Britain and South Africa, scientists are finding a number of new variants that seem to have originated in the United States and many of them may pose the same kind of extra-contagious threat.
In a study posted on Sunday, a team of researchers reported seven growing lineages of the coronavirus, spotted in states across the country. All have gained a mutation at the exact same spot in their genes. ....

After nearly a year in lockdown for the residents of Good Shepherd Nursing Home eating meals in their rooms, playing bingo over their television sets and isolating themselves almost entirely from the outside world their coronavirus vaccinations were finished and the hallways were slowly beginning to reawaken.In a first, tentative glimpse at what the other side of the pandemic might look like, Betty Lou Leech, 97, arrived to the dining room early, a mask on her face, her hair freshly curled.

Wheeling residents Irene “Renee” and John Anderson have been married since 1949 and had experienced few days apart until the COVID-19 pandemic struck.
WHEELING John and Irene “Renee” Anderson of Wheeling are living their wedding vows even more devoutly today as they did when they pledged to one another more than 70 years ago. Add in COVID-19 and “for better and for worse” became “for worse and for a little less worse.”
Renee, 91, has been a resident of the Home of Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling for just over a year. John, 93, lives in the Braddock Apartments located within the nursing home facility so he can remain close to his beloved spouse. ....

Vaccine Rollout On Track at Long-Term Care Facilities in West Virginia | News, Sports, Jobs

WHEELING As week three of the COVID-19 vaccine rolls on to close out 2020, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities are distributing the vaccine to their staff and residents.
At the Good Shepherd Nursing Home and Welty Home, in Wheeling, Assistant Administrator Morgan Murphy reported a 76-percent vaccination rate among staff and residents, representing a total of just under 400 people.
Murphy said the remaining 24 percent largely consisted of staff who declined to receive the vaccine voluntarily, in addition to new hires who were not eligible to be inoculated. However, those who declined will be able to get their first dose once it comes time for those who did receive it to get their second dose. ....
