in just a moment. but first marlie hall is in orlando. marley? reporter: matthew is expected to come ashore or very close to it later today. the entire florida coast is bracing for a long day of punishing wind, rain and storm surge. you can feel the droplets hit your leg, hit your arm, hit your hands. reporter: hurricane matthew is making its presence felt across the florida coast. and this is only at half the wind speed that it s supposed to be. reporter: overnight the outer bands of the storm gang pummeling the area with began pummeling the area with rain and winds. the category 3 storm sent boats rocking. it s quite a sight. reporter: storm shutters were ripped off the front of businesses in west palm beach. in daytona beach, police were left patrolling empty streets as most residents listened to evacuation warnings. we can rebuild homes and businesses. i want to personally plead with you to get out right now. don t wait one more moment. save yourse ....
is likely the largest and most powerful hurricane to hit the united states in a decade or so. reporter: with hurricane matthew roaring back up to category four strength and packing 140-mile an hour winds, president obama declared an emergency in florida. ordering federal aid to supplement local response efforts and authorizing federal agencies to take action. there are those who doubt the intensity or severity of the storm. they need only look at the images that are coming back from haiti. reporter: matthew has already slammed parts of the caribbean. it has left more than 100 dead. back home national guard troops have been called up many senior citizens and hospital patients in coastal areas are being moved inland. evacuate. evacuate. evacuate. are you willing to take a chance to risk your life? reporter: with gas food and other staples in short supply in many places, and hundreds of flights scout flights canceled, thousands are choosing to take advantage of ....
