An award-winning fish and chip shop in the Whitsundays has been given the green light for its ambitious plans to introduce an outdoor dining experience.
Whitsunday Regional Council approved Bowen Fishermans Seafood Company’s development application to almost double the floorspace of Bird’s Fish Bar at 42 Henry Darwen Drive, Bowen.
Documents stated the proposal would convert 120sq m of roofed back area into a dining space and connect it to a new kids play area towards the front of the store. Whitsunday Regional Council approved expansion plans for Bird’s Fish Bar in Bowen.
The business has undergone many renovations since it was established in the early 1980s including adding a concrete deck area, a larger kitchen and refrigerated display cabinets and “significant restoration” after Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017.
Bowen Toyworld seemed like a fun way to realise that ambition and Mrs Mawhirt said she loved seeing the excitement on children s faces. It s like Christmas every day when the stock is coming in, Mrs Mawhirt said. Even kids from some other towns, they d come in and be so excited and running around and it would be pure joy. A lot of adults come in for a chat and a little bit of a social outing. The last few years you notice the kids that used to be kids, now they re bringing their own children. The past 17 years have not been without challenges for Mrs Mawhirt.

Sarina and Bowen are two towns to receive the new concept K-hub stores where Target once operated.
The spokeswoman said the Bowen store would close at the end of January and re-open as a K-hub on February 3, while Target Sarina closed on January 9 and would re-open at K-hub on January 27.
