Treasurer Jim Chalmers says Australia’s gas industry is a “really important” part of the nation’s economy.
“I acknowledge that, and I respect that. And want them to be profitable,” Mr Chalmers said on Wednesday at a media conference.
“All that we are asking by imposing this cap on the price of domestic gas is that these incredibly high prices they re getting on markets don t hollow out our local industries or smash Australians in the process.” ....
Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor says Australia does not need a “big spending budget”.
“We saw an extra, more than $100 billion of spending in the October budget and all signs are we are going to see a lot more spending in the May budget,” he told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.
The Australian s Health Editor Natasha Robinson says Medicare’s fee-for-service system is “broken” amid the Labor government’s move to reform Medicare this year.

Sky News host Andrew Bolt has clashed with Opposition leader Peter Dutton over the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, questioning why the Liberal leader does not oppose it on “principle”.
Mr Bolt said he does not know why the Liberals can’t say “no to racism”.
“Nobody is in favour of racism in the Liberal Party and if they are they don’t have a place in our party,” Mr Dutton said.
He said the Liberal Party is putting “appropriate pressure” on the government to release more information on the Voice to Parliament.
“I think by the way in which we have entered this debate, as I say in a respectful way, we have said on behalf of millions of Australians, who may not be as adamant in their position as you (Andrew Bolt) are.
“They want to hear that information, that they want the detail from the Prime Minister.” ....
Voters are “going to get to know” NSW Opposition leader Chris Minns and will “like what they see,” says NSW Shadow Water and Housing Minister Rose Jackson.
