The Calvin Theatre s A-less sign in Northampton has inspired a beer called C LVIN.
NORTHAMPTON – The city’s most notorious missing vowel is getting its very own beer.
The C LVIN India Pale Ale, named after the appearance of the Calvin Theatre sign with its missing “A,” is slated to be released this week at bars across the Valley as part of Western Mass Beer Week.
The limited-release beer is a collaboration between Brewmaster Jack of Northampton and Abandoned Building Brewery of Easthampton.
“It celebrates Northampton culture,” said Tyler Guilmette, owner of Brewmaster Jack. ....

A changing landscape: How the pandemic has altered the look of downtown Northampton

Published: 4/9/2021 2:56:31 PM
NORTHAMPTON Longtime downtown business owner Bill Muller thought he had a plan consolidate his Northampton businesses, Guild Art Supply and Pierce’s Frameshop, and his Easthampton printing business, Big Wheel Press, into one space in the old Serio’s Market storefront on State Street in Northampton.
The spot was ideal, complete with parking. “We were working on floor plans and everything,” he said. “Then COVID hit.”
Surrounded by so much economic uncertainty, Muller scrapped those plans entirely. Instead of staying in downtown Northampton, where he’s run Guild Art Supply for 37 years, he made the tough decision last year to move the store and framing shop to his press space in Easthampton. ....

NORTHAMPTON Seven restaurants and bars entered a lottery for a liquor license held by the city’s License Commission on Wednesday and one lucky winner emerged.
“We choose at random out of an old-school bingo spinner from the city clerk,” said Annie Lesko, the clerk for the License Commission, who also works in the mayor’s office.
India House on State Street was chosen as the winner at the commission’s meeting Wednesday. The license, which allows bars and restaurants to serve beer, wine and liquor, was previously used by the Sierra Grille on Strong Avenue before it closed this fall. ....

Who was Slint? “Teenagers who thought about music differently than other people did,” is one fan’s simple description of the game-changing quartet from Louisville, Ky.
The band only made two enigmatic records in the late ’80s and broke up before the second one, “Spiderland,” was released; their legend started growing immediately. As the years passed, the love for that strange, intense, abstract “rock” record seemed to grow exponentially.
