Published: 4/9/2021 2:56:31 PM NORTHAMPTON Longtime downtown business owner Bill Muller thought he had a plan consolidate his Northampton businesses, Guild Art Supply and Pierce’s Frameshop, and his Easthampton printing business, Big Wheel Press, into one space in the old Serio’s Market storefront on State Street in Northampton. The spot was ideal, complete with parking. “We were working on floor plans and everything,” he said. “Then COVID hit.” Surrounded by so much economic uncertainty, Muller scrapped those plans entirely. Instead of staying in downtown Northampton, where he’s run Guild Art Supply for 37 years, he made the tough decision last year to move the store and framing shop to his press space in Easthampton.

But Packard’s outspoken owner, Robert McGovern, said Monday the downtown economy is very different now from a year ago and has even changed since he closed Packard’s in November.

STAFF PHOTO/CAROL LOLLIS Published: 2/5/2021 8:55:30 AM NORTHAMPTON Seven restaurants and bars entered a lottery for a liquor license held by the city’s License Commission on Wednesday and one lucky winner emerged. “We choose at random out of an old-school bingo spinner from the city clerk,” said Annie Lesko, the clerk for the License Commission, who also works in the mayor’s office. India House on State Street was chosen as the winner at the commission’s meeting Wednesday. The license, which allows bars and restaurants to serve beer, wine and liquor, was previously used by the Sierra Grille on Strong Avenue before it closed this fall.

STAFF PHOTO/CAROL LOLLIS Modified: 12/16/2020 4:43:53 PM NORTHAMPTON Farm-to-fork French restaurant Bistro Les Gras, a high-end fixture next door to the Smith College campus, became the latest local business casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic as it announced its closure online Wednesday. The announcement marked the end of a 12-year run by the downtown dining establishment, which opened during the Great Recession. Co-owners and married couple Elizabeth Martinez (manager) and Daniel Martinez (chef), bid their “adieu” in a Facebook post and on their website, thanking community members for their patronage at the restaurant over the years.
