him being gone. a somber day for hayward police, and police across the country. good evening, i m julie haener. i m frank somerville. the shooting happened 3:15 this morning, when scott lunger pulled over a truck for driving erratically. as sergeant lunger got out of the car and approached the driver s side of the vehicle, the driver shot sergeant lunger without warning. a second officer in a separate vehicle had also responded and returned fire as the pickup raced away. the second officer used his radio to alert dispatchers. shots fired shots fired! white chevy truck. he s still going! white chevy silverado truck, i copy. set fire, and my partner down. partner down. who s down? sergeant lunger is down. within a couple of hours, the bullet riddled pickup truck was found abandoned in east oakland. sergeant lunger was taken to the medical facility. he had died from his injuries. hayward police officers gathered to show their grief and support. they stood

scooter in a parking lot outside her mother s apartment. the 8-year-old disappeared just after 5:00 last night. we had no sign of her for more than 24 hours. just before 8:00 tonight, police came swarming into the parking lot of the tannery arts center, where madyson lived with her mother. witnesses say officers took a 15-year-old boy away from handcuffs. we get the breaking news tonight from jana katsuyama. she s been at the scene working to get the latest details from the police and the fbi. reporter: julie, the police chief of santa cruz police department just finished a news conference here. he was the one who made this announcement. i m going to step aside so you can take a look at the scene. he tells us at 7:55 tonight, one of the detectives discovered a body inside a dumpster that s located back there in the garage area of this apartment complex, where maddy middleton lived. they say it appeared to be that of a young female. they have not positively identified the bo

cal fire says thousands more homes are in the path of that fire. that fire broke out just about 4 days ago and residents in the clear lake area searching for answers at a community meeting set up by emergency officials responding to this blaze. noel walker joins us. reporter: we re near highway 53. what i m looking back at this did not look like that a couple of hours ago. we had to go quite a bit up further highway 27 to see the smoke and flames. they are visible from our position. 20 minutes ago someone from caltrans told me they are getting ready to close highway 53 because the fire is so close. they have been doing water drops in this area nonstop trying to get a handle on this fire. the rocky fire has done nothing since it started wednesday afternoon but grow, not just a little, overnight the flames chewed through more than 20,000 acres doubling its size to more than 47,000 acres in just a five hour period. unprecedented in cal fire s experience. the fire has extr
