April 6, 2021 The City of Galesburg will see a new leadership after last night’s election. Fifth Ward Alderman and Knox Professor Peter Schwartzman defeated incumbent John Pritchard to become the new mayor of Galesburg. Schwartzman brought in nearly 47 percent of the vote while Pritchard received about 41 percent. The third runner in the race, Kristine Crow, took in only 12 percent of the vote. He tells WGIL about the grassroots effort to meet voters and learn about the challenges they are facing and what they’re looking for in a mayor. “What I heard from people… not everybody was my friend and many people didn’t know me. But, what I heard from them was that they wanted something a little different. They wanted a new vision for the city. They wanted to think about opportunities and not about challenges.” ....
Tuesday, Galesburg Police released a notice of multiple reports of stolen election signs. They noted that this is a theft punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Police Chief Russ Idle was quoted saying that anyone caught stealing election signs will be arrested. The thefts have impacted at least one mayoral candidate personally. Mayoral candidate Peter Schwartzman took to Facebook Tuesday night saying that his signs started disappearing from his own yard Monday night. “I am pretty confident that I will be able to find out who did this on video. It is so ridiculous that someone is so callous to remove yard signs,” he said. “As the police chief made clear in a press release today, people engaging in this type of activity will be prosecuted and jail time is a potential outcome.” ....
Deborah Moreno One issue on top of Galesburg voters minds is a proposed $26 million Lake Storey expansion project. A Phase One feasibility study, released in December, outlined expanding the lake to four times its current size and building new homes. The Lake Storey Project The root of the proposed project is to offer the community more recreational opportunities, according to Galesburg Park and Recreation Director Tony Oligney-Estill. He explained that developing housing along the lake is one way to pay for the expansion. The $26 million price tag includes $10 million for purchasing land, $6 million for building costs, and an estimated $10 million for park use. ....
