Tuesday, Galesburg Police released a notice of multiple reports of stolen election signs. They noted that this is a theft punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Police Chief Russ Idle was quoted saying that anyone caught stealing election signs will be arrested. The thefts have impacted at least one mayoral candidate personally. Mayoral candidate Peter Schwartzman took to Facebook Tuesday night saying that his signs started disappearing from his own yard Monday night. “I am pretty confident that I will be able to find out who did this on video. It is so ridiculous that someone is so callous to remove yard signs,” he said. “As the police chief made clear in a press release today, people engaging in this type of activity will be prosecuted and jail time is a potential outcome.”
