Galesburg Post Office officially being renamed for Sr. Airman Daniel Miller

The Galesburg Post Office will officially be renamed on Wednesday after the late Senior Airman Daniel Miller Jr. U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos introduced legislation in 2020 to rename the East Main Street Post Office after Miller. Miller graduated from ROWVA High School and immediately joined the U.S. Airforce, eventually earning the rank of Senior Airman and becoming an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Airman. He was deployed from the 775th Civil Engineer Squadron's Explosive Ordinance Disposal Flight in Hill Air Force Base, Utah, which is responsible for defusing military and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and working with chemical and biological weapons. But on Jan 7. 2007, at the age of 24, Miller was killed in action attempting to defuse a car bomb in Iraq. The renaming takes place on Wednesday, September 7th at 10:30 a.m., with Rep. Bustos and Miller's family expected to be in attendance. Bustos has helped rename several post offices after fallen soldiers in the 17th District ....

Tuesday, Galesburg Police released a notice of multiple reports of stolen election signs. They noted that this is a theft punishable by a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. 
Police Chief Russ Idle was quoted saying that anyone caught stealing election signs will be arrested.
The thefts have impacted at least one mayoral candidate personally. 
Mayoral candidate Peter Schwartzman took to Facebook Tuesday night saying that his signs started disappearing from his own yard Monday night. 
“I am pretty confident that I will be able to find out who did this on video. It is so ridiculous that someone is so callous to remove yard signs,” he said. “As the police chief made clear in a press release today, people engaging in this type of activity will be prosecuted and jail time is a potential outcome.” ....

WASHINGTON – On Thursday, legislation introduced by Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline, to rename the U.S. Post Office on East Main Street in Galesburg as the “Senior Airman Daniel Miller Post Office Building” passed the House of Representatives and will now head to the Senate.
In 2004, Daniel Miller of Galesburg, joined the United States Air Force after graduating from ROWVA High School in Oneida, where he played varsity football and his principal described him as “always smiling” and “caring about everyone.” Miller went on to earn the rank of Senior Airman and became an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Airman. He was deployed from the 775th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal Flight in Hill Air Force Base, Utah, which is responsible for defusing military and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and working with chemical and biological weapons. ....
