History was made in Holly Springs with the elections of the city’s first African American female mayor and the first African American female alderman of Ward Four. Mayor Sharon Gipson was sworn in Saturday and Wednesday afternoon, Patricia Lesuer Merriweather took the oath as Ward Four alderman. “I’m humbled to be the first elected African American female for this position of alderman of Ward 4,” said Patricia Lesueur Merriweather. Her 89-year-old mother Hazel Lesueur held the Bible as the new alderman took her oath. ....

PONTOTOC ⢠Voters in Pontotoc have elected Jimma Smith and Joe DiDonna to the city s board of aldermen in Tuesday s runoff primary election runoffs. Unofficial results released Tuesday night show Smith defeating opponent Kevin Purdon in the race for the seat as Ward Two alderman by winning 67% of the total ballots cast, or 137 votes to Purdon s 67. In the Ward Three, DiDonna defeated incumbent Dennis R. Simmons. Unofficial results have DiDonna with 68 votes, or 58%, and Simmons with 50 votes. Tuesday night s runoff races concluded the 2021 municipal elections for the city of Pontotoc. No general election will be needed as the mayor and four alderman positions are now filled. ....

April 6, 2021 The City of Galesburg will see a new leadership after last night’s election. Fifth Ward Alderman and Knox Professor Peter Schwartzman defeated incumbent John Pritchard to become the new mayor of Galesburg. Schwartzman brought in nearly 47 percent of the vote while Pritchard received about 41 percent. The third runner in the race, Kristine Crow, took in only 12 percent of the vote. He tells WGIL about the grassroots effort to meet voters and learn about the challenges they are facing and what they’re looking for in a mayor. “What I heard from people… not everybody was my friend and many people didn’t know me. But, what I heard from them was that they wanted something a little different. They wanted a new vision for the city. They wanted to think about opportunities and not about challenges.” ....
