Daily supplementation with a high dose of omega-3 fatty acids may help slow the effects of aging by suppressing damage and boosting protection at the cellular level during and after a stressful event, says a new study.
Researchers at The Ohio State University reported that omega-3 supplementation at a dose of 2.5 grams per day for four months blocked the stress-related decreases in the activity of telomerase (an enzyme that rebuilds telomeres) and anti-inflammatory cellular signaling.
In addition, a lower dose (1.25 grams per day), was associated with reductions in overall levels of the stress hormone cortisol and IL-6 (a pro-inflammatory cytokine) levels in 138 sedentary, overweight, middle-aged men and women, according to findings published in
