Lewes Mayor and City Council will consider removing the outdoor mask mandate at its meeting Monday, May 17.
Masks have been required in the downtown business district and beach parking lots since July, but Lewes Board of Health Chair Dr. Paul Cowan of Beebe Healthcare said it’s now appropriate to allow people to make their own decisions.
“From a science standpoint, we have always understood from the early days that natural air is the best antiseptic,” he said. “Whether the virus is spread by droplets or aerosolized, natural airflow pushes it away and to the ground quickly.”

I am writing to request your support in my re-election to the Lewes Board of Public Works. I believe my technical, managerial and conflict-management skills have been and will continue to serve the rate payers of the BPW.
As one of the negotiators in the BPW/city dispute, I can confirm what one council person running for re-election stated in their responses to the Cape Gazette’s questions. In July 2020 the BPW offered to the city that all new service outside the city limits would require MCC approval. This would be written into our respective charters and until that point BPW has abided by this rule. I truly believed that this would have removed the main point of contention and allowed for a resolution; unfortunately it did not. I do believe that after the election, both sides can come together and resolve this for the benefit of our rate payers and the taxpayers

I first met Earl Webb when he set up a tour of the sewage treatment plant. I had some serious concerns that related to the plant and the spill in 2019. When we were walking out he said something that stuck with me. He said one of the reasons he decided to accept the appointment to BPW was in large part because of the spill. He said he wanted to do everything he could so it never happens again, and will be open to our concerns of the current situation relating to volume, and definitely plans for the future massive additions to the system.

I have participated with Tom Panetta on the Lewes Planning Commission in many a contentious hearing, and have experienced the strengths he brings to the position, and which I am sure he exhibits on the Lewes Board of Public Works. He always comes prepared, listens to participants - whether the public, the petitioner or relevant experts - and carefully forms an opinion. I believe his engineering background leads him to make logical, fair and future-considering judgments on planning issues.
For these reasons, I encourage the Lewes community to support his run for the Board of Public Works this coming Saturday.
