coming up in just a little bit. well, from times square in new york city to our own san francisco waterfront. the new year 2016 began as spectacular shows filled the skies. people celebrating new year's eve. from the ktvu rooftop camera we could see the fireworks right over the bay bridge lighting up san francisco's skyline. no major problems were reported by police. that's great news. every available officer was out patrolling the streets. and in new york times square an estimated one million people watched the countdown. did some kissing out there, of course. tradition. they watched that ball drop. the huge crowd was surrounded by extremely tight security. thousands of police officers, uniformed and undercover, were there to keep everybody safe. the streets were filled with confetti. more than a ton of it was dropped to celebrate new year's eve. probably still cleaning up right now. the performers included carrie underwood and demi lovato. on the left of your screen, that is a celebration in old sacramento. 9:00 last night the very same time as the ball was dropping in new york city. now, in the middle of your screen, that's las vegas. thousands of people from all over the country head for vegas for their new year's party every year. and on the right that incredible shot, the fireworks show in boston. back here in the bay area, the clean-up in san francisco after last night's big new year's celebration, it started right away. as soon as the fireworks ended, the clean-up crews went right to work. ktvu fox 2's christien kafton on the waterfront. how does it look out there right now? >> reporter: looking pretty good. we have moved in the last hour. we were by powell street last hour. now we're down here by the water front. you can see behind me, some of the barricades left over. this is where party central essentially was last night. hundreds of thousands of people gathering around this area, and now the big clean-up after last night's big celebration. now, we watched earlier today as the barricades were loaded up onto flatbed trucks making their way around the city. we have seen fleets of street cleaners out patrolling the streets and a lot of trash out on the streets. signs of the hundreds of thousands of people who flooded into san francisco for last night's new year's eve fireworks show. when we showed up in the city at around 5:30 this morning we still found a few die-hards who were out from last night. they say that they are already making big plans for 2016. but they say they had a great time ringing in the new year. >> it was kind of a little crazy, but, you know, we went from club to club. it was just very exciting. >> reporter: one of the big draws, of course, that fireworks show last night. hundreds of thousands of people turned out on the waterfront to watch the 15-minute show despite the cold temperature. san francisco police out in force last night making sure the celebrations did not get out of hand. one more note. as i drove in this morning to work, i noticed a couple of, we'll say, some less than perfect drivers out there. one of our photographers even called 911 twice to report drivers that he suspected of being drunk. so we will look for a little bit more information from chp later today to find out how many duis they had, how many pull-overs last night. the take home for people to party safe and bring in the new year the right way, right, guys? >> we hope everybody is careful and safe out there. thank you. well, for 127 years the rose parade in pasadena has delighted audiences from year. >> reporter: the amount of security as well as the rose bowl game. there will be lots of it. something we have never seen from this. but not just from local police, but federal agencies. they are there to keep people safe and to have a good time. talking about the parade as we speak, crews are putting in those finishing touches to floats and several of the bands. floats are getting ready to line up along the parade route, which, by the way, in case you didn't know, is five and a half miles long. imagine walking for that long in a parade route. this year's theme, by the way, is find your adventure, which coincides with the centennial celebration of our country's national parks. but it takes an estimated 80,000 combined hours of hundreds of volunteers to put together 44 floats for today it. it's quite a task for several people who camped out last night, and some for days, to a spot along pasadena's infamous colorado boulevard. >> we will be showing movies. we got a screen and everything. we are doing everything. we got water. we got barbecue pits. >> i want to hang out with them next year. the rose parade is adding an unprecedented level of security as we mentioned following the santa barbara shooting. these measures include federal agencies, as we mentioned, as well as armed tactical rapid response teams, bomb-sniffing dogs, and even radiation detection devices. of course, several surveillance cameras. now, no credible threat has been issued, but authorities are not taking any chances. on a lighter note, there are a few bay area connections, including stanford's band playing this morning. of course, team playing in the rose bowl later today. also saratoga's band and color guard will be performing at the parade as well. talking about our people from the broadcasting industry, bob eubanks, stephanie edwards. i mean, i grew up watching them on tv. >> yeah. >> this is the last year they will be doing it. >> it is? >> yeah. they have been doing it, i think, 38 for stephanie, 35 for -- >> a lot of years. and always very good. >> very good. >> people might be interested in the job, right? they can contact them? let them know. >> we have 2's alex savidge joining us live now. tell us some of the changes. >> reporter: the governor signed more than 700 bills into law last year, and many will have an impact on workers here in our state. among other things, the minimum wage, it will bump up to $10 an hour today. it had been nine. that's a step up for some workers, although it may not have such a big impact in the bay area because several large cities like oakland and san francisco, they had set their minimum wage already at $12 an hour. now, a separate law, it will allow women to challenge gender-based wage gaps. this legislation requires employers to prove that a man's higher pay for similar work is not based on gender. lawmakers this year also focused on gun control. one piece of legislation, it was prompted by a shooting rampage at uc santa barbara back in 2014 that left six people dead. this new law allows family members to ask a judge to take away firearms from a relative who appears to pose a threat. now, another law dealing with gun control extends a ban on concealed weapons at schools and community colleges removing an exemption for those with concealed carry permits. also, starting in 2016 it will be a whole lot easier to get rid of that old mattress. a new law makes california just the second state in the nation to set up a recycling program for used mattresses and box springs. and you can find collection sites by going to a website that's called bye-bye mattress dot-com. and, of course, the goal there is to try to get people to get rid of those old mattresses the right way as opposed to dumping them on the sides of the roads, as we often tend to see, dave. they are trying to deal with the problem that way and set up a program here in california. >> right, right. all right. alex savidge, thank you for the update on these new laws. thank you. time is 8:36. starting today you are going to have to be at least 21 years old to buy a pack of cigarettes in some parts of the south san francisco police are looking for people caught on camera stealing several luxury cars from a car dealership. now, police say three men and one woman cut the lock to the main gate of the royal auto worth several hundreds of thousands of dollars. a spokesman for the dealership says nothing like this has ever happened before. >> not in our 60-plus years of business have we ever had a vehicle levi stadium where fans can eat and drink. time is running out for a youth soccer league in the south bay to make its case against the nfl in court. starting on monday the nfl is going to take over the soccer league's soccer fields. they are right next to levi stadium. the plan is to turn that area into a media village for the super bowl. it's part of a long-standing deal the nfl made with the city of santa clara. lawyers for the youth soccer league tried but did not get a temporary restraining order. an injunction hearing is set for wednesday. but the nfl may start building on those fields
