storm that's moving in right now. ktvu's alex savidge is out there in the city this morning. he's keeping an eye on that repair work. he's also checking a number of places across the bay area that are still trying to recover from flooding caused by the last big storm and coming up in a couple of minutes we'll check in with him. he will tell us what's being done to try to prevent the rain from making bad situations even worse. keep your headlights on this morning. steve is not fooling around. we're gonna get some more rain. >> we'll get some rain today. maybe sunday afternoon, evening. but. cloudy skies, only light rain right now. it will pick up. a good cell over highway 50. snow level is pretty high. there might be a couple of breaks later on. cloudy right now. rain beginning to pick up for a few. it's light. nothing too heavy but light amounts along the coast trying to get its act together. it looks like more around the noon hour. coming out of the santa cruz mountains, there continues to be light rain. it doesn't matter if it's light. they can get it and it can add up. might be some thunderstorm activity. it looks active into tonight. even saturday morning. 50s on the temps. with a south wind kind of a mild air mass. that's why the temperatures will go up. look for this to continue probably into early saturday. rainfall projections will be heavier to the north. san jose down to monterey, we'll get rain. santa rosa up to ukiah. by sunday this system comes right back in. there is a couple on the way here. cloudy with some rain. it picks up into the noon hour, the heaviest will be to the north and the 60s. sal they've touched on that. rain lights have to be none. >> absolutely your headlights have to be on when your wild shield wipers are in full operation -- your windshield wipers are in full operation. you can be cited for that. just remember that. this is a look at westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. that traffic is okay. average speed 53 miles an hour. not too bad. this has stayed kind of nice for the morning. but as steve mentioned, it is gonna rain for the commute. you will be stuck in traffic this afternoon if you are bringing your car to the city. right now it's taking 30 minutes. let me move this to the livermore valley. unusual for it to be so good on 580 through dublin and livermore. we'll take it, thank you. 680 southbound at you drive to the walnut creek interchange. it's not too bad. there are traffic lights on highway 37 at lakeville. it's causing a big traffic jam for westbound 37. at 7:0 had. back to the desk. work crews are speeding up efforts to fix that massive sinkhole in san francisco before the next storm moves which is later today. ktvu's alex savidge joins us now from the city with more on that project and some other ways the bay area is bracing for today's rain. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. it's a bit of a race against the clock to try to get as much of this repair work done before more rain arrives later on. almost right on cue here. they cranked up the heavy machinery. we're seeing more activity right now. work crews out here trying to get some of this repair work done. we are learning more about how this huge sinkhole opened up here in san francisco. it was apparently caused by a broken storm drain. all of that water eroded to sand under the sand and led to the collapse. this is a 20-foot by 20-foot crater that opened up in the richmond district. this sinkhole runs about 9 feet deep late yesterday gats and water service was restored to this neighborhood. crews will be spending today trying to fix sewer lines in this area. we're told it may take until early next week possibly to finish all of the repairs related to this huge sinkhole. in the meantime, there's quite a bit of storm damage up in marin county. this is surveillance video showing floodwaters seeping through the front door of the champagne salon and day spa in tiburon. several stores were flooded and will are to be repaired as well. a lot of people trying out and cleaning up from that series of storms earlier on this week. of course, now, it's time for everyone to get prepared for even more rain. this morning, i reached out to a representative from the public utilities commission to get a better sense when the repair work will be done on the sinkhole. we'll let south of san diego. it's scheduled for 8:28 a.m. the engineers at that's ames helped out -- at nasa ames helped out and they are hoping this will lead to manned missions to mars in about 20 years. back here it's beginning to look like the holidays around the prayer. tara moriarty is on a while tour of fun events this weekend in san francisco the last hour, tara was in union square but now, tara, you've moved inside the fairmont with a look at a giant gingerbread house. >> reporter: yes, it smells like freshly baked jenger bread inside this lobby. it's absolutely amazing. we want to show you the biggest gingerbread house in san francisco. there is. just -- just kidding. that's the doghouse. that's for the dog. we'll show you the real thing. look at this. it's concocted of more than a ton of icing and canny -- candy, gumdrops, marshmallows, candy canes. absolutely beautiful. the person who oversaw this project is the top chef here at the fairmont. in -- of pastries? >> the expect chef. >> reporter: the executive chef. this is andrew. >> good morning. >> reporter: this is a work of art. how long did it take? >> three weeks to put it all together. just under 400 hours for pastry chefs and 200 hours for engineering. it's a wood frame and then we use icing to glue all of the ginger bred -- gingerbread bricks. >> reporter: it scts -- asks that you not remove the candy. a marshmallow was taken up here. that had to be an adult, or the kid was gigantic. >> reporter: we ask that everybody respects the gingerbread house. but, you know, as it's christmas, all of the big kids and little kids all get carried away. we do come up every morning and evening to fix any little bits of damage. >> reporter: you've been doing this for eight years and grew. >> every year it grows a little bit more. we add different things, details. this we are we have the new clock up above us and we have the carousel with the nut crackers. the train track is longer and we've added a village on the outside. >> reporter: do you bake these big sheets of gingerbread and glue the pieces on the wood frame? >> we use the pastry sheets. we cut them and bake them. 7700 pieces of bricks. >> reporter: how do you feel now that it's all done? >> a little relieved. it's great to see all of the kids, like big kids, small kids. the smell of the gingerbread walks all the way through the say the nfl should end the blackout rule. the lawmakers want the nfl to allow home games to be televised in the local market even if the game is not sold out. the senators say the blackout rule is just not fair to fans. now, if the fan does not end the blackout rule. congress may step in to force the nfl to lift that ban. 7:13 is the time. b.a.r.t. hoping to put a halt to a growing problem. up to thanksgiving. in the first leak, the hackers released video file of films that were not yet in theaters that include fury, annie and mr. turner. employees were forced to use paper and pen because those hackers shut down their computers. there's speculation someone with the company may be involved. sony is working with the fbi trying to investigate this cyber attack. 7:16 and we want to check in with sal. hopefully no problems on this friday morning. >> it's a little lighter than usual. let's take a look. you can see the traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's not too bad. it's moving along nicely getting up into the city. about a 25-minute delay as you drive through. there was an accident. now there is an accident, but there's also some signal lights not working properly. highway 37 at lakeville road and this area is a mess. if you are driving from vallejo over to novato, please give yourself a lot of extra time and also give yourself just a little bit of patience. people have been honking their horns and stuff. not a great way to start a friday. southbound 101 as you drive into san rafael looks good. and across the bay, you can see that the 80 freeway from vallejo all the way to richmond, a couple of slow spots, nothing that major. 280 in san jose, northbound, that looks good getting into the cupertino area. steve said it had been raining a little bit in the santa cruz mountains. let's ask limb about -- him about that and other things. >> there's a few pockets around, heemedsburg, the east bay, coming out of the santa cruz mountains. it's cloudy to mostly cloudy. it's not a strong system. but it will give us some rain. nothing too heavy. there will be heavier amounts from the golden gate northward. this does not look like a big system at all. but a cloudy morning with a little bit of light rain. friday afternoon and evening rain, maybe into saturday morning. next system is racing right along. it will be here sunday afternoon and evening in the north bay and then overnight into monday, there are hints of a pretty good system maybe strong next thursday. we'll see. that would be colder. we'll get friday rain. light rain. heavier for the afternoon commute into tonight. cloudy, mild, light rain. but the rain picks up. possibility of thundershower activity. a lot of moisture activity. it wants to hang out on highway 50. a little bit of rain there. 50 in the mountains the we get a little cloud cover and a little bit of rain. there is a cell parking itself right there. that's about all i can find. there might be rain underneath it. the radar is not picking it up. also around marinwood near novato. that looks really light. little pockets of it around clayton out to bay pointe, pittsburg, walnut creek, if you are getting light rain, this is very light. also coming out of the santa cruz mountains. but again, that can be deceptive. even though it's drizzle. it can be steady and add up there. some of that cloud cover coming in we'll have to focus right there, the little development taking place. that could give us brief, heavy rain and maybe thundershowers. 50s on the temperatures to 60s. 57 ukiah, sacramento. still 31 in tahoe. there are no warnings or watches. the snow level goes up. this is a mild system. it will give us a cloudy to mostly cloudy day. heavier rain is back here. so that really won't arrive until the noon hour. south not too much. maybe san francisco, oakland, southward, peninsula to monterey, lesser amounts. there will be some moderate to heavy amounts not only this system but the same one sunday night. that's painting heavy rain up into mendocino county. cloudy, rain, rain picks up later. the heaviest will be north bay. it may take a while to get to the south bay. 60s on the temps. the breeze storm. thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes this morning as a typhoon moves towards the fill when beans. the sloerm was -- philippines. the storm was slightly downgraded. waves are expected up to 45 feet. the storm is also headed for the same area devastated by supertyphoon last year. while this storm is not supposed to be as strong as haian, many people are still recover erg. one family from sunnyvale said her family survived the last storm but she worries about their safety this time of around. >> if it is going to hit as hard or how close it was to hian, they will suffer again. >> bay area organizations are monitoring the storm and preparing to help. they are looking at ways that they can send money, food an other items to families in need. 7:24. this weekend market 73 years since the japanese attacked pearl harbor. a teenaged sailor from hayward survived that bombing raid and mike mibach talked to him. the veteran is now 92 years old and says he wasn't scared that day. he was just trying to survive. >> reporter: curious about his crops, he's a proud man walking his land. what's your favorite thing to eat that you grow? >> almost anything but apricots. here is a big one. >> reporter: he's quite the character. >> look at the size of that sucker. >> reporter: a gardener. >> peppers. >> reporter: a story teller who pat 92 years old and living in hayward takes us back to when he was 19 and at pearl harbor. december 7th, 1941. >> this is no joke! >> reporter: back row, right with the mustache, he was an electrician on the u.s.s. san francisco. she was just off battleship row preparing for repairs when the japanese attacked. >> right here. >> reporter: 3500 americans were killed or wounded. >> what the hell am i gonna do? i had one choice. they are gonna let me out hour sink me. what do you want? well, i want to go out. >> reporter: and he also finally served aboard the ship. the u.s.s. hornet docked here in alameda. on the 73rd anniversary on the attack at pearl harbor, it will be aboard the hornet that he will share his memories that day in 1941, a day his wife says he doesn't like to talk about. >> he didn't talk about the service for years and years and years. too painful to talk about. >> reporter: with the little money they had, they married in reno, september 9th and 64 years later. >> i wasn't sure i was married or not. >> reporter: love and laughter are still there. >> 18 battle stars and -- 21 i think altogether. even got a good conduct one which really surprised me. [laughter] >> i got about eight, nine trees. it's enough for me. >> reporter: they had four children, he built homes and cared for his yard. >> years ago, right now, it would be pruning time. >> reporter: he calls it a hobby now but in his eyes you can see the passion. >> that's that fit in the box right there. i get by. >> reporter: as he walked his land on this cool december day in a brief moment by ourselves, he spoke of his passion about being a sailor in the u.s. navy. >> i'm very proud of myself. i don't like to take crap from nobody. i walked the deck and that's what i do. >> museum will hold a special ceremony this sunday honoring the memory of those who lost their lives december 7th, 1941. and he will be the special guest speaker. >> such an honor to get to meet somebody rain. the hills, though, are just itching. they are rarin' to turn green. we have more rain on the extended outlook, including today. weapons and the gear that they needed and the quality of life for themselves and their families that they deserve. when our troops in iraq and afghanistan were struggling to defend against roadside bombs, he moved heaven and earth to rush them new body armor and vehicles. it's no exaggeration to say there are countless americans who are alive today in part because of ash's efforts. when our forces sat down for thanksgiving dinner far from home or as our wounded warriors recovered in the hospital or when our fallen heroes returned to dover, ash was there, often on his own time without any publicity or or fanfare and i know he will be there as secretary of defense. we face no shortage of challenges to our national security. we have to transition to a new mission of advising and april sissing afghan forces and going after remnants of al qaeda's core. >> we've listen listening into president obama. he's describing ashton carter because he's announcing him just now as the -- officially announcing he's the next secretary of defense. carter has previously served as deputy defense secretary and the president was talking about his accomplishment. he replaces chuck hagel and the nomination does have to still be confirmed by the between now and next week, i think three systems next thursday, it's very wet for you, especially the north bay. we have one system we're dealing with. .25. maybe .10. possibility of an inch to 1.25. once is sets up, they are getting rain in the santa cruz mountains as well. that can really play into a very wet pattern. noon into the afternoon commute looks to be where the heaviest rain false. sierra snowpack -- it will be a high snow level. these are warm systems but next thursday, friday, looks like a kelder system -- colder system. some very light rain. not a lot. kind of poching up -- popping up. it looks like a little around windsor. maybe a little around hopland on hopland. that's about it. there was a little bit around marinwood. i can't find too much. clayton to baypoint, pittsburg. this is light and coming out of the santa cruz mountains. there's some in the boulder creek, scotts valley. saratoga, sunnyvale. 50s on the temps or 60s. this is not a cold system. it will be a cloudy day. the rain picks up later into this afternoon and tonight. heaviest will be to the north. possibility of a few thundershowers. here's sal with an update on your friday. it's a little lighter. a little bit lateert today -- lighter today. i want to show you the eastshore freeway which usually we have 30, maybe 40 minutes and some days we had 90 minutes. it's only 25 right now. traffic is doing very well. a-mile-an-hour speed limit. for this time of the -- 45-mile- an-hour speed limit for this time of the hour. i also want to show you the livermore valley. most of the time we show you a lot of slow traffic through here with the road sensors red or yellow. today it's heading out to castro valley. we don't have a lot of things going on. we're going to look at the south bay in the next report just to see if the roads are being affected by a little bit of wet weather. but it looent -- it doesn't look like it. we'll have another update coming up. back to the desk. b.a.r.t. increasing efforts to keep bikes from being stolen from the stations. there's a new program and new safety measures. brian flores has more. >> reporter: good morning to you. stolen bikes, not just a problem on b.a.r.t. but throughout the bay area. that means adding more bike lockers. but also educating cyclists how to keep their bikes secure. now, representatives from bike east bay will be at b.a.r.t. stations until the summer of 2015 in the early-evening hours, sharing tips, handing out theft materials and passing out u-shaped locks. those when installed properly keep your bikes safer than cable locks. the plan is to expand more secure places to keep bicycles secure by adding more bike lockers, spaces and bike stations like you see at ashby, embarcadero, downtown berkeley and fruitvale. cyclist he spoke to said he hopes b.a.r.t. puts safety on the thefts. >> in my case, for example, i use two locks and my locks cost more than the bicycle. in the past, i had the bicycle stolen. so i had some experience. >> reporter: next month, b.a.r.t. plans to open another bike stakes at the 19th street -- stakes at the 19th street station. there is also a station at the civic center station. officials also say they are planning bike stations at concord, macarthur and pleasant hill. they plan to have those open sometime next year. back to you in the studio. >> brian flores, thank you. new this morning, san francisco police busy investigating two separate crashes involving cars and pedestrians. the latest one happened just early this morning. 6th and mission streets. police say a hit-and-run driver hit a woman who was crossing the street. now she was not seriously hurt. police are still searching for the driver. witnesses say that person was driving a gray nissan sedan. and a man is fighting for his life right now after being hit by a car while walking across san francisco's great highway. now, this happened last night near john f. kennedy boulevard. that man was rushed to the hospital. he's listed in critical condition. police say the woman driver stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators. an oakland police car was damaged during a second straight night of protests following new york grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer for the death of an unarmed black man. 300 people marched in downtown oakland, raising awareness of what they saw call a crisis in confidence of police officers. more rallied at the fruitvale station, forcing it to be temporarily shut down. at the common well club, a former friend of martin luther king, andrew young, spoke about race relations and the need for dialogue. >> if you don't have community, you will have chaos. we talk about building community. that's by and large what we have to do. >> protesters planned another demonstration in oakland at 7:00 tonight at telegraph avenue and 27th street. [chanting] >> a protest in san francisco briefly stopped traffic on market street last night. several dozen demonstrators gathered at market and powell, at one point, they forced a couple of muni lines to be rerouted. new york city, though, remains the epicenter of the police protests. about 200 people have been arrested so -- so far as thousands spanned out from the brooklyn bridge to the new york police headquarters. now, the daughter of eric garner, the african-american man who died, says that the officer who applied the chokehold to her father should take responsibility. >> nothing is gonna bring my father back. you need to do the right thing and admit you were wrong and do your time. >> new york's mayor has ordered tens of thousands of police officers to complete a three- day course to retrain them on how to de-escalate confrontations. 7:39. we're gonna gift gears now. back at home, city workers in pacifica are being praised for going beyond the call of duety. they helped the couple retrieve a lot of engagement that went dunn the sewer. larry said his ring slip off his finger and went into a flushing toilet. he thought it was gone for good until elsa a story about a woman who got her ring back after her child flushed it down the toilet. so he called pacifica sewage department. the crew just happened to be in the area doing maintenance work. they wanted to help out. in fact, then used a camera in the sewer pipe. the water's normally murky but our recent rains made it pretty clear. >> it was -- we had a light on the camera. we were able to see it quite well. we had the right -- the right conditions. >> it wasn't something in the job description. just something they wanted to do. >> and they did a good job. there it is. the ring traveled about 1,000 feet from larry's home. >> there's some better than expected news from the labor department. the u.s. economy added 321,000 new jobs in november. that's 86,000 more than economists expected and the biggest jump in nearly three years. despite that, the unemployment rate held steady at 5.8%. analysts say that's a signal that more people are encouraged about their prospects of returning to the work force. we want too check in on the numbers this morning. taking you live. the dow jones up a little bit. about .3134%. 54 points. closer to 18,000 a little bit this morning. and, of course, next week will be a big week because we have -- i believe it's three bay area companies going public. well, the bay area still drying out from last storm. but moral rain is on the way -- mor rain is on the way. coming up next, the repairs crews are scrambling to make ahead of the storm. it was breaking news on "mornings on 2" yesterday. a san leandro police officer hit by a car. it turns out the person behind the wheel was a teenaged girl. up next, what else we've learned about the crime. and we to have some slowing in some places. but other places are lighter than usual. we'll tell you more about the in this traffic update. a couple of reports on rain, especially up around ukiah. a little bit in the santa cruz mountains. some fog around sutro tower. it will be a rainy day. but for the bay area, the timing will be later than sooner. more on that. a 16-year-old girl is in custody accused of running over a san leandro police officer. it's a story we first brought you yesterday during "mornings on 2." investigators say the teenaged driver was in a stolen car when she ran over the police officer while trying to get away prompting police to open fire. the police officer was seriously injured but is expected to survive. >> there appeared to be a substantial amount of blood at the scene that was from the police officer who was doing nothing more than responding to a routine call for service. >> the girl surrendered hours later and is now facing charges of attempted murder and auto theft. she did have a minor injury to her hand believed to be the result of police gunfire. police also arrested a 19-year- old man who was riding in the stolen car. two men were pittsburg have been arrested in connection with the shooting deaths of a father and son in the south bay. the two 20-year-old men seen in the photos were arrested last month in walnut creek and concord. police say they are suspected of shooting and killing a father and son inside their south san jose home in september. police have not released any other details about the shooting and are still asking anyone with information to come forward. 7:45. shifting gears. by the way, i want to play for the warriors. they won their 11th straight game. they tied a franchise record. klay thompson led -- i think his eyes were closed. but he did made it look easy. he led the warriors with 23 points in the win over the pelicans last ask shutting down both bores of the tunnel due to a emergency response drill scheduled several months ago. san francisco's putting tons of sand back where it came from. 42,000 tons of sand on the north ocean beafn will be moved to the south end. strong waves and winter weather pushed the sand from the south to the north end of the beach. as it builds up, it's hard for people to get to the beach. it can bury wildlife habitat. the project is scheduled during daylight hours monday through friday and may continue for several weeks. in southern california, crews continue to dig out from a big mess. we've been showing the pictures of heavy rain and mud flooding streets, causing very serious problems yesterday for drivers in riverside county. the officials say nearly 40 people had to be had a couple of reports of rain up near ukiah. this looks light. light can add up here. nothing too heavy but it's still well offshore. it will be here later on. a little bit in the east bay popping up, maybe around baypoint, oakley, brentwood, highway 4 and continues into the santa cruz mountains. i have a couple of reports of some rain there. that continues to funnel in. that can be a wet pattern. that's the system we're waiting for. could be a few embedded thunderstorms with that. that will give us rain this afternoon. maybe into early saturday morning. 60, 6 sphee, half moon bay. mountain view as well. could get thunderstorm activity coming in on the back side of this. a lot of that is lifting north. the rainfall projections not too much to the south. but about marin county northward looks good. look what happens -- look what happens. steve said, the commute will probably not be good, because it will be rainy. a live picture here of the bay bridge toll plaza, it has improved. it's about a five to ten-minute delay getting into san francisco even in the south bay where it was busy on 85 and 280 and 101. things are beginning to improve. a little bit of slowing here and there. you will definitely see that it's lighter than usual right now. work crews are speeding up efforts to fix the massive sinkhole in san francisco before the next storm moves in later today. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from san francisco. they don't look anywhere close to having that thing fixed. they are not gonna finish the project. it will be a few days before they get it wrapped up. they are trying to get as much of this work done as possible. secure the sinkhole before the rain arrives. that's the goal, i understand. we're learning more also about what caused this massive sinkhole in san francisco. it was caused by water bling from a broken storm lane nearby. as you can imagine, all of that water eroded the sand, that led to the collapse. this 20-foot by 20-foot crater opened up at the intersection of 6th and lake in the city's richmond district. the sinkhole runs about 9 feet deep. late yesterday, gas and water service was restored to the people living nearby. and crews will be spending today trying to fix the sewer line that were impacted by this collapse. in the meantime, there's quite a bit of storm dang up in -- damage up in marin county. let me show you surveillance video. floodwaters seeping through the front dorn of this salon and day spa in tiburon. there were also several other stores in tiburon that were flooded and will are to be repaired -- and will have to be repaired as well. now it's time to get ready for more rain. all of the repairs won't be finished until early next week. crews are trying to get as much of this work done as possible before the next storm system moves in. a race against the clock here. back to you. >> alex savidge, live in san francisco. thank you for the update. 8:05. keeping kids safe from sexual predators in oakland. it's a new goal of a campaign by the city and by law enforcement. stats show the average age of recruitment into sex trafficking is 12 to 14 years old. oakland police arrested 532 people this year in connection with human trafficking. 27 children were rescued as a result of those arrests. now, in an efefeffort to -- effort to raise awareness, night walks are being held. a preschool is being shut down after an accident that injured two children. a bookcase fell over during nap time at the preschool about two weeks ago. a child suffered a fractured skull. another one had facial injuries. now the department of social services has temporarily suspended the preschool's license. the state officials say the school did not seek immediate medical attention for the children. it made unsafe changes to their facility. this order will close the business pending a legal hearing. a plan to expand schools in berkeley is creating controversy. the school district wants to accommodate more students in the next two years. right now the district is considering several options. one is to move the berkeley tech academy from its current home to the adult school on san pablo avenue. that option, a new elementary school would be created at the old berkeley tech campus. people living near the adult school are worried about negative impacts from combining the schools. another option being considered, consolidating kindergarten programs to make more room in classrooms across the district. 8:07. in case you are wondering, sunday's big game between the raiders and the 49ers sold out. that means fans not heading to oakland coliseum can still watch the battle of the bay right here on ktvu channel 2. helpoff 1:25 sunday afternoon. sunday's game is the first game since 2002 that the raiders have hosted the 49ers. u.s. senators from both parties say the nfl should end the plaqueout rule. they want the nfl to allow home games on televised in the local market even if the game is not sold out. the senators say the blackout rule is just not fair to fans. now, if the nfl does not end the blackout rule, congress may step in to force the nfl to lift that ban. oakland's jack london square is set to ring in the holiday season with to earth. this is a live news feed from nasa. you can see the parachutes and right in the middle of that is orion. it will be splashing down in the pacific ocean south of san diego right about now. we're tracking this as nasa keeps an eye on this. this is all live. you are seeing it as i'm seeing it. now, nasa has a lot going on right now. it has drones planes and ships out there keeping an eye on this so they can quickly retrieve it. now, this was a launch earlier this morning. so orion is coming back after being in space about four and a half hours on a test flight. it traveled about 3600 miles above earth. it's coming back to earth's atmosphere. it was going 22,000 miles an hour. but again, it is floating back to earth landing in the pacific ocean just outside of san diego. i'm sure the engineers from nasa ames research center in mountain vau are feeling quite proud. they helped develop orion which nasa is hoping will make astronauts to mars in about 20 years. the splashdown, i'm looking at this right now. it looks like it's down in the ocean, in the pacific ocean. the drones, the ships and helicopters are circling all around it. you are looking at these live pictures. bravo bikes are not just a problem on b.a.r.t. it's a problem throughout the bay area. a recent report from b.a.r.t. says there was a 20% increase in bike thefts from 2006 to 2011. as more people take bikes bicycles secure by adding more bike lockers and spaces and more bike spakses like you see at ashby, embarcadero, downtown berkeley and fruitvale. >> i think it's fabulous. i use the lockers all of the time and in different locations. >> bicycle thefts in the bay area pretty prevalent. in my case, for example, i use two locks. and my locks cost more than the bicycle. in the past, i had the bicycle stolen. i had some experience with this. >> reporter: and next month, b.a.r.t. plans to open another bike station at the 19th street stop in oakland. there's also a bike station under construction at san francisco's civic center station. officials with b.a.r.t. also say they are planning bike stations at concord, macarthur and pleasant hill stations. they hope to have those open and operational by pedestrians. latest one was early this morning at 6th and mission treatment streets. police say a hawt driver hit a woman who was crossing the stree. she was not seriously hurt. police are still looking for the driver. witnesses say that person was driving a gray nissan sedan. and a man is fighting for his life of a being hit by a car while walking across the great highway. it happened near john f. kennedy boulevard. that man was rushed to the hospital. he's listed in critical condition. police say the woman driving the car stopped immediately and is cooperating with investigators. an oakland police car was damaged during a second straight night of protests following a new york grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer for the death of an unarmed african- american man. [chanting] >> hundreds of people marched in downtown oakland raising awareness of what they call a crisis of confidence in police officers. another group of protesters rallied at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station forcing it to be temporarily shut down at the commonwealth club, a close friend of martin luther king, andrew young, spoke about race relations and the need for dialogue. >> if you don't have community, you're going to have chaos. well, we talk about building community. that's by and large what we have to do. >> protesters planned another demonstration tonight at 7:00 at telegraph and 27th street. [chanting] >> protest in san francisco briefly stopped traffic on market street last night. several dozen demonstrators gathered at market and powell. at one point, they forced a couple of muni lines to be rerouted. new york city, though he, remains the he -- remains the epicenter of the protests. 200 people have been arrested. thousands of demonstrators have fanned out across the city. this is what this looks like last night. they traveled across the brooklyn bridge. the daughter of eric garner says the officer who applied the chokehold to her father should take responsibility. >> nothing is gonna bring my father back. you need to do the right thing, admit that you was wrong and do your time. >> new york's mayor has ordered tens of thousands of police officers to complete a she-day -- three-day course to train them how to de-escalate confrontation. after ferguson, missouri and new york, phoenix is the latest city dealing with a white police officer killing an unarmed african-american. >> everybody knows what's going down. >> everybody knows what's going down. >> about 150 people marched through phoenix protesting the shooting. it began with the officer trying to break down a suspected drug deal. after chasing the suspect, the police officer opened fire, thinking the suspect was reaching for a gun. instead, he was putting his hands in his pockets to hide a pill bottle. >> well, because with the problem that's happening all over america and now it's so close to home, it's kind of hard to ignore. >> now, the man who was shot leaves behind four daughters. while the police say he was not armed, they did find marijuana and a semi-automatic handgun in his car. it used to be home to several hundred homeless people in san jose. but they have been forced to move out. many of them watched as their belongings were thrown into garbage cans. the city of san jose has been working for the last 18 months to find alternative housing. already 144 people do have housing. others have temporary shelter at this point. but many more still have no place to go. >> we're already homeless. now we're displaced homeless. they don't want us on the streets. it's el legal hob homeless but they are taking this -- it's illegal to be homeless but they are taking this away from us. where do we go?
