temperatures soaring above 100 degrees. coming up in two minutes, ktvu's brian flores will tell us about the pattern firefighters noticed that sparked concern and what they want you to be on the lookout for. good morning, welcome to "mornings on 2." welcome back, dave clark. >> good to be back. good to see you. i'm dave clark. let's talk about weather and traffic. everybody wants to know how to dress this morning, steve. i ducked outside. it didn't feel too bad 0. >> it depends if you are going to the city or the coast, it might be chilly. inland, warm to hot. andy mccarthy sent me a picture from diamond heights saying there's nothing. san francisco, you know, 78 yesterday. i'm going 72 today. but they will set that by noon. i think that temperature drops after the noon hours. it's there, parts of the coast. there's still some resistance on the sonoma and the marin county. i don't think it makes much of an impact. maybe marin headlands. inland it will not take long to warm up fast. there's really warm air aloft. i do expect a late sea breeze but not before temperatures get to 100. could be a few cues in the hills, a low offshore. that will pick up the fog and ramp it up. it will be on the way for tonight for some of those maybe partly cloudies, but the fog bank will be here it will just take another day or tonight and then into tomorrow before it starts to make much of an impact. warm to hot. fog near the coast. again, mainly san mateo, santa cruz and a late breeze. 90s, 100s inland. 60s, 70s and 80s by the water. here's sal. we're looking at a commute where traffic already getting busier on the eastshore freeway. you can see it in hercules and richmond. we'll show you a picture of the freeway in berkeley. it's taking almost a half-hour to drive between the carquinez bridge and the macarthur maze. that's your drive time, 29 minutes. average speed, 40 miles an hour. bay bridge toll plaza, that's backed up for a 30-minute delay plus, although we suspect it will get better at some point. that's been the trend for the last week. right now, it's certainly not better. it's backed up for 30-minute plus delay. 680 and 2 had 2 is backed up -- 242 is backed up. the drive time between pleasant hill road and the caldecott tunnel is 8 inter-- eight minutes. the past few days, a serial arsonist seems to have been targeting a neighborhood. brian flores is live in livermore with the damage that's been caused there. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yeah. luckily, the damage has been minimal. but the concern is the hot temperatures, especially here in the livermore/pleasanton area. temperatures reaching 100 degrees, possibly today. and that has many residents very concerned. want to go to a map where the fires have been popping up. we don't know what the suspect or arsonist looks like. we know the person is targeting an area called district 7 which includes an area near north livermore and las positas. he lights fires between midnight and 4:00 a.m. the fires are about a quarter acre in size. the amount of times, the officials are asking for help. >> we have an arsonist running around livermore. we're getting fires in the same location every night, same area. i think we're up to five fires in the last three nights all in the same area. >> reporter: taking it back out here live, fire officials say no structures were bushed. they were small grass fires. i did get off the phone with fire officials. they say there were no suspicious fires overnight. but with these high temperatures expected today, fire officials as well as police are on high alert. they are warning anybody who sees anything suspicious to give them a call. we're live in livermore, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. today is the bay area's second spare-the-air day in a row. with more people on the road this morning, though, air district managers expect more smog today than yesterday. commuters are being asked to try to carpool or take public transportation, if possible. the hot temperatures and low winds are expected to continue for the next few days. and remember, you can get the latest on the conditions from steve and the rest of the ktvu weather team online. they are posting updates on twitter and facebook even when we are not on the air. >> all right, tc. new this morning, the investigation into the cause of a fire at a san francisco dry cleaners and one nearby business owner says this is the second fire in that building in about nine months. it happened at mcafee's cleaners near the corner of third and hudson in the bayview hunter's point neighborhood around 3:30. there is an apartment above the dry cleaners. firefighters quickly searched it, found out it was vacant. a construction site next door was damaged. now, the owner of costanzo's says his shop will be closed today. he is right next to that dry cleaners and says this is not the first time he's had to deal with a fire. >> it happened before, too. this is the second time it happened. i don't know what he's gonna do with the building. >> firefighters say the fire started in the rear of the dry cleaners. the cause, that is still under investigation. at one point, the muni says in the area was shut -- station in the area was shut down but trains are once again stopping at the that stop. oakland police investigating an accident involving an officer's patrol car and a young woman at 84th and international in east oakland last nate. police say the patrol car hit the woman while she was walking a -- across the street. it's not clear if she was in the intersection at the time. the woman was taken to the hospital. her condition is not known. witnesses say it appears the police car was not rushing to any kind of emergency. >> that first car came across, no sirens, nothing. he just hit her and stopped. >> now, police say they are still investigating everything surrounding that crash. we'll keep an eye on it and update this story when we get new information. happening today -- san jose councilman sam liccardo is expected to bet a big endorsement to become the new mayor. chuck reed will endorse him for the november ballot at a news conference later this morning. he placed second in the election behind dave cortese. reed is serving his last year in office due to term limits. the contract talks have hit a dead end but muni says riders can still expect normal service today. muni management and union leaders unexpectedly called off an arbitration session scheduled for saturday. the stalled talks raised concerns about another sickout. but they say all of the buses, trains and cable cars are on schedule, at least for now. we'll continue to update the story. apple stock, a lot less expensive. on friday, it was trading at $645. this morning, it's at $the 2.20 -- $920.20. that's because the stock split took effect at the opening bell this morning. janine de la vega is joining us live now in los gatos to explain what that means to apple investors and to the company. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. analysts are going to be watching this stock to see if this move by apple drives investors to buy more shares. is has a lot to do with psychology and people wants to buy when a share is cheap. now, the price of one share of apple is going to drop. it has dropped from $645 to $90, $95 range. it started to sell slightly above $92. that's because apple is doing what's called a stock split which means issuing more shares to existing investors to brick down the price. everyone -- bring down the price. everyone who owned a share as of june 2nd will get credit for own be seven shares. this will make it easier to buy the shares. the company's value remains the same but this may attract more investors who previously wouldn't buy in because it was so expensive. we asked people if they would buy. >> i do through mew chul funds, but not -- mutual funds. but not individually. i would look at it, absolutely. i own all apple products. that's all i use. >> reporter: some think this may pave the way for apple to be clouded in the dow jones. apple was never included before because of the high stock price. it's unclear if that will change. analysts will be watching the stock to see how it performs and whether it gets included in the dow. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. the number of fatal car accidents resulting from marijuana is increasing. researchers at columbia university found that marijuana- related traffic deaths tripled from 2000 to 2010. studies done by the national highway traffic administration show drugged driving is most common among younger drivers. nearly half of the near fatally injured drivers were younger than 25 who tested positive for marijuana. it found 6% of nighttime drivers are high and that figure more than doubled on the weekend. >> wow. all right. still ahead -- a car crash controversy. this one involves oakland's mayor, jean quan. now the mayor disputing claims. alex savidge is digging more into the story. we'll let you hear from him in about 20 minutes. drivers doing parts of the coast not making much of a surge north. still hot inland. we'll have the numbers -- coming up. welcome back. 7:14. in oakland, emma morton and her husband trying to blame drivers blamed for dangerous sideshows from taking over their neighborhood. she filmed this video last sunday afternoon on macarthur and foothill. she said months ago, her husband told those drivers to leave and her husband was attacked after that. the sideshows did stop for a while, but now it looks like it's starting again. >> i am concerned about the entire community. we have children that cannot play outside. and that's their right. >> now, just before 5:00 last night, drivers started doing doughnuts again around -- in the round-about in front of the morton home. by the time they went outside with the video camera, the cars were screeching away. they say it's only a matter of time before they were able to capture the license plates on camera. family members are mourning the death of a mother of eight who police say was killed by a drunk driver in petaluma. the 65-year-old vallejo woman and her daughter were driving home from a graduation ceremony on lakeville highway saturday night. police say their car was hit head-on by a 25-year-old man who had crossed over the double yellow lines. the woman driver died instantly. her 9-year-old daughter was sleeping in the back seat and suffered minor injuries. >> he took a mother, a grandmother, a sister. took her away. >> now, the victim's family are not sharing her name because they are still notifying family members. the driver has been identified as jesse cockrill. police found an open container of alcohol. he is in the hospital with major injury. but he's expected to survive and face arrest. the taliban's claiming responsibility for a deadly attack on pakistan's largest and busiest airport. 18 people were killed when terrorists disguised as policemen opened fire with machine guns and a rocket launcher. the fighting lasted for five hours. pakistani government leaders say all of the terrorists are dead and no civilians were injured in the assault. the group says the attack was revenge for a drone strike that killed a taliban chief last fall. ♪ >> an online fund-raising campaign for a reward in connection with the missing malaysia airlines flight is now up and running. relatives of some of the passengers on board launched the website yesterday. so far, though, they've only raised $6,000, which is just a small fraction of the $5 million they are hoping to get in the next month. part of the $5 million would serve as reward money to encourage people about information about the flight to come forward. the rest would go towards hiring a private investigator. secretary of state john kerry is speaking out for the first time on the decision to exchange five taliban figures for the release u.s. army sergeant bowe bergdahl. the secretary of state is defending the decision despite criticism from both democrats and republicans. kerry says he's confident the five guantanamo detainees who were released in exchange for bergdahl will be closely monitored and that the conditions of their release will be honored. >> i'm not telling you that they don't have some ability to go get back and get involved but they also can get killed doing that. >> bergdahl is recovering at a u.s. military hospital in germany. once he's stable enough to travel, he will be transported to a medical center in texas. critics of his release say he deserted his unit and should not be considered a hero. 7:18. hillary clinton kicks off a national tour this week, promoting her new book, but this is giving clues to how she might run again for the white house. hillary clinton's book is called "hard choices." it will be released tomorrow. the former secretary of state will appear at book events in new york city, chicago, philadelphia and washington. she remains the leading democratic contender for the white house if she chooses to run again for president. she's already said she doesn't plan to make an announcement until after the november elections. >> she'll be coming to san francisco at the end of the month. we want to check in with sal who is keeping a close eye on the commute. how are things looking alt at the toll plaza? >> it's crowded. a 30-minute plus delay at the toll plaza. this is the peak of the morning commute. we're hoping to get improvement after 8:00. we'll see. traffic is still a little bit slow, obviously. it's beginning to loosen up, as you can see. it's a little better than it was a few moments ago. there's hope. this is a look at the drive from oakland -- by the way, the drive time, 30 minutes at the toll plaza. about eight minutes from here to downtown oakland. if you are driving on 24 westbound, also an eight-minute drive time from walnut creek to orinda and someone sent me a tweet saying the lanes are narrow through the construction zone on 580 and the speed limit is 55 miles an hour. he told me he thinks that's contributing to all of the slow traffic we've seen in the corridor lately. back to steve. all right. thank you. clear skies for some. looking down the estuary here. but there's fog on parts of the coast and a few locations of the city. antonio in daly city said the fog is starting to make a push. i can feel the sea breeze. it's on its way. it won't make much of an impact inland. maybe later this afternoon. could be a few partly cloudies. a little low off the coast. water temperatures came up this week compared to last week. they were 49 to 55. this week, 52 to 57. 57 off hoog. 52 bodega bay. we're getting some areas of fog. right by the coast, we'll start to see the fog making a little bit of a push. it's very shallow. by tonight, it will be helped along. i think a strong surge tomorrow. patchy fog, clear, warm for some already. mostly sunny, hot inland. i say mostly sunny, there could be a few partly cloudies, there's a little low moving in that might spin them in. the record high 91. the record low, 47. today, we won't be there. this is the tough by. i went 72 at noon. but i think by 4:00 it drops to 66 as the sea breeze kicks in. there's a little bit of patchy fog there. pretty solid on the santa cruz coast starting to work its way up the coast. some areas in the city and the bay. 60s on the temperatures or 70 in fairfield. 55 half moon bay. the breeze not really there yet. sfo has a little component of it. 45 at tahoe. 65 ukiah. 67 sacramento. it will be in the 100s again for ukiah and clearlake. but by tomorrow, that fog is on its way. you can see there's plenty here. by tonight, tomorrow, it begins to fill in. this low is going to help it. warm to hot except fog near parts of the coast. a late breeze looks like it's on tap. temperatures, though, will be all over the place here. 70s, 80s, 90s to 100. 80 berkeley alameda. i think a breeze kicks in. 90 san jose. gilroy, 100 which was 102 yesterday. 60s on the coast. 70s, 80s or 90s. big difference here between, say, pacifica, woodside. by tomorrow, the fog returns and a cooler pattern takes us into the weekend. it looks quiet going california chrome is back home in orange county after this weekend's disappointing loss at the belmont stakes. this is video of him in the barn at belmont park before being flown home. he will rest his injured hoof and prepare for the classic in november. it appears that california chrome bumped into another horse at the starting gate before saturday's race and that put a tear in his right front roof. his trainer described the injury as similar to having a fingernail pulled out. this morning, california chrome's co-owner, steve co bur, is now apologizing for comments he made after the belmont stakes. following the race, he called the other owners cheaters and cowards. he said these people nominate their horses for the triple crown and hold out two races and then come back and run one. that would be like me at 6'2" playing basketball with a kid in a wheelchair. this morning, coburn said he was ashamed of the things he said after the race. he apologized to tonalist, the winner of the race, and everyone involved. he said the horse deserved to win and hoped he did not take anything away from the team. 7:27. two police officers gunned down in a deadly rampage in las vegas. coming up in ten minutes, what witnesses heard the shooter say moments before the gunfire. controversy surrounding a weekend car crash involving oakland mayor jean quan. what the other driver involved claims city. fog, late breeze. 100s for some. 60s, 70s for others. here's sal. all right, steve. we have a look at the traffic. as i mentioned, we are gonna show you highway 4 and the drive time here has opinion steady for that short distance a six-minute drive time. speeds at about 30 miles an hour coming over the hill. but nearby, southbound 680 is going to be slow. westbound 580 is also still slow. we're not getting that monday break that i had hoped for here in the mid -- in the beginning of june. this commute has been very slow to what is a construction zone for a lot of the way and then you make the turn into pleasanton throughout the whole area now. southbound 880. let's put a drive time up here for you. southbound 880 between 238 and thornton is 32 minutes which is slightly more than average here and westbound san mateo bridge approach is going to be slow. at the bay bridge toll plaza, we do have a look at a commute that's backed up for a 25 to 30- minute drive time into the city. let's take a look at the -- at the santa clara valley. 101 this is the slowest commute. it's slow all the way back from near yerba buena and up to the sunnyvale area. back to the desk. all right, sal. well, mayor jean quan is on the defensive after she was involved in a car crash. the other driver was claiming the mayor was holding her cell phone at the time and ran a red light. alex savidge joining us live to tell us more about this and how mayor quan is responding. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning to you. i just reached the mayor's spokesperson a short time ago. he says there's no new information the mayor wants to put out. she's referring to the statement she released late yesterday in which she said she absolutely was not talking on her cell phone at the time of the crash. the mayor is also planning to submit her phone records to police in order to prove it. >> it's on camera. that's mayor quan. >> reporter: this is cell phone video taken after the accident that shows mayor quan checking on the people in the other car. this crash happened after 5:30 at 26th and market in west oakland. no one was seriously hurt. so far police have not said who was at fault. mayor quan was drive alone in her city-owned lexus suv when she collided with a nissan which had a woman and a 14-year- old boy as a passenger. the woman driving the nissan claims she had a green light and the mayor went through a red light causing the crash. the other driver also says the mayor appeared on her cell phone at the time of the accident. >> it looked like a phone to her head. it was -- the light was red. she clearly knew -- i don't know why she tried to beat the light. >> reporter: at the time of this accident, the mayor was driving from one church meeting to another in west oakland. witnesses tell ktvu it appeared the mayor was obeying the speed limit and she also did remain there at the accident scene to talk with police and also to make sure the other people involved were okay. traffic investigators from the oakland police department will be piecing together exactly what happened yesterday and ultimately will decide who was at fault for this accident and whether or not anyone involved was talking on their cell phones at the time of the crash. i have reached out to oakland police for an update on their investigation. we'll let you know when we hear back. we're live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. 7:35. the oakland police department wants more money to give the police helicopter more time to fight crime. according to the chronicle, the oakland police department asked city council for $397,000 starting july 1st to double the amount of time the helicopter can fly, from eight hours a week to 16 hours a week. the police department claims it can use the helicopter to fly over low priority calls, giving patrol officers more time to get to more serious incidents. oakland and san jose are the only cities in the bay area that have police helicopters. 7:36. happening today -- the jury will be selected for a concord elementary schoolteacher accused of inappropriately touching his students. 45-year-old joseph martin was arrested last summer after a group of students from woodside elementary school claimed he molested them. concord police say an investigation revealed the complaint started back in twix, but that the school -- 2006 but that the school district never reported the issue to police. martin has pled not guilty to 150 counts of molestation. one of the two sonoma county teens accused of using stolen credit cards to rent a luxury sports car is expected in court today. sheriff's deputies arrested 19- year-old mohand holloway on wednesday. he was driving a $240,000 mcclairen coupe which had been reported stolen. he's still in custody. his 19-year-old passenger was also arrested. the pair is accused of using stolen credit cards to rent a $12 million vacation home. protesters in albany say they will protest tonight outside the albany city council meeting. they are angry that two of the last people living in the area known as the albany bulb were evict and told to stay away. demonstrators say police have harassed the people living there. the city offered those living in the waterfront park $300,000 to leave but only if they promised to stop living in city parks. the protest will start at 7:00 tonight at albany city hall. there are reports that hiring a chinese company to make key parts of the new eastern span of the bay bridge was a really expensive decision. according to the sacramento bee caltrans picked the zanahua port machinery company to build the signature tower because officials thought the company could do the job faster and cheaper. the paper is claiming caltrans paid the company millions of dollars and completion incentives and spent hundreds of millions to fix problems with that work. happening today -- president obama is due to announce plans to make it easier for college students to pay off their student loans. the president is expanding an existing program. it prevents borrowers from having to pay more than 10% of their monthly income for student loan payments. the president also plans to announce he's directing the government to renegotiate contracts with federal student loan services to encourage them to make it easier for borrowers to avoid defaulting on student loans. a trial that will start this morning in oakland could help determine the future of college sports and whether athletes should get paid. the anti-trust case includes plaintiffs like former ucla basketball star ed o'bannon and sam keller. they used to play high school paul in danville. now, they are suing the ncaa claiming as leeckets in major sports like football and basketball -- athletes in major sports like football and basketball should be compensated for the use of their name and image. they claim the ncaa and colleges get millions of dollars every year by selling tv righting, player -- tv rights, player jerseys and the rights to video games. the lawsuit says they should get a lot more than just a year- to-year scholarship. two officers shot in las vegas while sitting and having their lunch. pam cook is in the newsroom with the shocking details and the local response. >> it appears to be ran doom but the investigation continues into the las vegas shooting. the two officers killed have been identified. they are 41-year-old alyn beck and 31-year-old igor solo. officer beck leaves behind a wife and three children. officer soldo, a wife and a baby. they were shot at point blank range while the officers were eating lunch. witnesses say the couple ran to a nearby walmart and killed a third person before taking their own lives in an apparent suicide pact. the tragedy has stunned the las vegas police. >> it's a tragic day. it's a very, very difficult day. we still have the community police and we still have the community to protect. we will be out there doing it with our heads held high. but an emptiness in our hearts. >> now, witnesses heard one of the shooters scream "this is a revolution" during that shooting rampage, but the motive is still unclear. now, the san francisco police department is showing its support and sympathy for their colleagues in las vegas. the department tweeted a message saying "our hearts and prayers are with the las vegas metro pd family." in our next hour of "mornings on 2," more information on the married couple involved in the victims of last week's shooting at a seattle christian college. investigators are still looking for a motive in thursday's attack at seattle pacific university. police say 26-year-old aaron ybarra shot and killed a 19- year-old freshman and wounded two other students. the 22-year-old man is being credited for peppering and tackling the suspect and preventing more from being shot. authorities recovered a shot gun and more than 50 shells. coming up -- an update on the condition of comedian tracy morgan criticically -- critically injured a car crash. and apple shares selling below $100. the reason for the big drop and why this is good news for investors in the company. a little girl like that that has a future. >> a young teen is killed after shots are fired at the car she was riding in. rusting in the breeze -- rustling in the breeze. 7:45. actor tracy morgan is showing signs of improvement this morning but will be in the hospital for several weeks after a serious car accident that killed one person. the spokesman for 45-year-old morgan says the actor suffered a broken femur, broken nose and several broken ribs. morgan was riding in the limo bus early saturday morning on the new jersey turnpike when they were hit by a big rig. morgan's friend and comedian jimmy mcnair seen on the left was killed. there are new reports this morning that the driver of the big rig, 35-year-old kevin roper, had been driving for 24 hours without sleeping. he was released on $50,000 bail on saturday night after turning himself into police. he may be in court this morning. he's charged with one count of death by automobile and four counts of assault by automobile. police say he failed to slow for traffic and hit the limo bus, causing it to flip. roper is a driver for walmart. the company says if he was at fault, it will take full responsibility. the ntsb is now investigating the safety issues relating to large trucks and limousines. 7:46. oakland police still out there searching for a gunman who shot three people on saturday killing a 15-year-old girl. police say the girl was riding in a car with two men in their 20s saturday night. they were on 83rd avenue heading towards a street when the shooting started. the driver was able to back up and stop against a fence. the 15-year-old girl died there at the scene. >> i joust thought it was fireworks. by the time i came out the house, police were flying down the street putting tape up. >> both men in the car, they survived the shooting. but one is in critical condition. libby shaft plans to hold a public safety meeting to talk about the violence. she says something has to be done to prevent young people from dying out on the street. tonight, the pleasant hill city council will meet and debate changing the city's zoning rules to match up with an ordinance passed last year restricting gun sales. the ordinance limits where weapons can be sold. it also requires gun sellers to have police permits. a pro-gun group based in newtown connecticut filed a lawsuit aimed the blocking the ordinance. they say it amounts to a change in zoning rules and that the city council should have consulted with the planning commission before they passed it. a trial surrounding that lawsuit is set for september. 7:47. san francisco police say the inmate who escaped from the hall of justice is still missing. they say 40-year-old timothy midgett was on garbage duty when he ran away saturday morning. he was scheduled to be released in less than six weeks after serving a year in prison for drug possession. there's also a warrant for his arrest on drug charges from houston, texas. sheriff ross mirkarimi is trying to lower the amount of money it costs for inmates and their families to talk on the phone. under his proposal, a 15-minute collect phone call within the city of san francisco would drop from $4.45 to $2.75. and a 15-minute long distance call within california would drop from $13.35 to $4. a board of supervisors' temperatures will be warm to hot inland. but some areas near the coast are going to cool down. there is a pretty good fog bank hugging most of the coastline. it's very, very shallow. tonight, it's expected to deepen. there is a little low coming in. it will maybe give us high and mid-level clouds. patchy fog, clear to warm already for some. mostly sunny, again, high clouds could come in hot inland. there will be a 40-degree spread on some of the temperatures. maybe 45. san francisco average high, 66, 52. the record is 92. the record low have to go far back 1893. went 72 at noon today. but 66 by 4:00. i think the fog will ramp up here. helped along -- you can see higher clouds out here a little bit. there is a lot of fog but i think the marin coast and sonoma coast probably stay reason why so many are finding it to difficult to pay for the items. and a hiker swept away by rushing waters. what he did just before he was rescued that saved his life. park rangers in yosemite are reminding people to be careful after a close call nearly sent a hiker over a waterfall. it happened last month when a man was climbing on some rocks near yosemite falls. he slipped and fell into a creek after being swept through 100 feet of white water. he was able to pull himself on a boulder where he waited for a helicopter team to lift him to safety. it's been one year since a devastating wildfire damaged two bay area camps near yosemite national park. now they are gearing up to welcome campers this summer. the berkeley tuolumne family camp is moving to a temporary location this year. it was destroyed by the rim fire last august. until the camp is rebuilt, it will be run out of a much smaller location near lake tahoe. the san jose camp which also received damage from the ram fire who -- rim fire will begin welcoming campers this friday. disney world's gay days has been attacked by critics. the florida family association protested over the weekend near the orlando theme park. now, that organization spent $7,000 flying banners warning people about gay days. the week-long celebration ends today. it attracts 160,000 people every year. it also generates more than $500 billion for the local economy. if you drink coffee, expect to pay more for maxwell house and yuban coffees. kraft has raised the prices 10% on roast and ground coffee products. the company says coffee bean prices, they've jumped 55% this year. brazil has been dealing with the worse drought in half a century. that's destroyed a lot of the coffee crop. the company ma makes fold yers raise -- that makes yers, raised their -- makes foldiers raised their prices last year. the woman killed in a car crash. the discovery made in the other vehicle's car that has him facing serious charges. >> reporter: you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see a delay of 20 minutes, 25 minutes. the drive time getting into san francisco and you will see some slow traffic as well. highway 24 getting more of a workout between walnut creek and the caldecott tunnel. if you are driving on 580, that's sold out through the construction zone, i got a tweet earlier this morning, saying one of the reasons it's always slow, the lanes are narrower through that area. in the south bay, 101 is an absolute mess from southern san jose all the way to mountain view. now at 8:02. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. the hot temperatures have fire agencies on high alert this morning and that's especially the case in livermore where for the past few days a serial arsonist appears to have been targeting one neighborhood. brian flores is live in livermore with more on when these fires are being set. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, tori. luckily, the damage from the fires has been pretty minimal at this point. but the concern as you mentioned, it will be hot. a lot of dry brush. we're standing at a business complex. obviously with the hot temperatures, along with the dry brush there is a greater risk of fires growing. no description of the suspected arsonist. we do know where he's targeting. firefighters call this district 7 which includes the area where we're standing at las pistas. the fires are not very big. four small fires popped up late friday night near a business complex on the hillside near the rose lawn cemetery. two more late saturday night on the north side near an apartment complex. while the pattern appears for the arsonist to start the fires when the temperature is at the coolest. the concern is the fires could spread quickly. officials are asking for the public's help. >> they are just small fires that are happening in what we call district 7 which is off north livermore and las postisas. >> reporter: fire officials say no structures were bushed. these are small grass fires. they say there were no suspicious fires last night. a lot of dry brush here in livermore and basically throughout the east bay. that's causing concern this morning and firefighters and police will be on high alert. they are asking residents or anyone who lives in the livermore valley if they see anything suspicious to give them a call. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. today is also the bay area's second straight spare- the-air day with more people on the road, air district managers expect more smog today than even yesterday. commuters, you are being asked to of a fire at a san francisco dry cleaners and one nearby business owner says it's the second fire in that building in about nine months. it happened at mcafee cleaners before 3:30 near the corner of third and hudson. this is the bayview hunter's point point neighborhood. there is an apartment above the dry cleaners. it's vacant. a construction site next door was slightly damaged and the owner of a sandwich shop says he will be closed. he's located next to the cleaners. he says this is the second fire there in nine months. the cause of the fire is under investigation. 8:05. oakland police still investigating an accident last night involving a police officer patrol car and a young woman. it happened around 10:00 last night at 84th and international in east oakland. police say the patrol car hit a young woman while she was walking across the street. it's not clear yet if she was in the intersection. she was taken to the hospital. her condition is not known. witnesses say it appears the police car was not rushing to any kind of emergency. >> that first car came across, no see rebs, no nothing. and he just hit her -- sirens, no nothing. and he just hit her and stopped. >> police are still investigating all of the circumstances involved with that incident. we'll keep on top of it and update the story when we get new information. 8:06. family members mourning the death of a mother of eight who police say was killed by a drunk driver in petaluma. the 65-year-old vallejo woman and her daughter, they were driving home from a graduation ceremony on lakeville highway saturday night. their car was hit head on by a 25-year-old man who crossed over the double yellow lines. the woman died instantly. her daughter was asleep in the back seat and suffered minor injuries. >> he took her auntie. she was a mother, a grandmother, a sister, and she took her away. >> now, the victim's family, they are not sharing her name. they are still notifying relatives. the trifner, though, has -- driver, though, has been identified as jesse cockrill. police found an open container of alcohol in the car. he's in the hospital with major injuries. he's expected to survive and face arrest. muni's contract talks have hit a dead end but the transit agency is saying riders can still expect normal service today. muni management and union leaders unexpectedly called off an arbitration session scheduled for saturday. the stalled talks raised concerns of another circout. but muni says all of its buses, trains and cable cars are on schedule, at least for now. we'll continue to update the story, though, all day long. apple's stock, much less expensive today. friday it was trading at $645. now it's trading at $92.54. that's up slightly from its first few minutes of trading after the 7-1 stock split took affect an hour and a half ago. janine de la vega is in los gatos and says the split could create more interest in apple's already popular shares. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. apple products continue to be popular and this lower stock price is expected to attract more investors. last friday, apple's stock closed at $645 a share but this morning, one share started selling slightly above $92. the tech giant is doing a stock split. it's a 7 for 1 split. so everyone who owned stock as of june 2nd will get credit for seven shares. this will make it easier and more affordable for people to buy shares in apple. the market value remains the same, but the prospect may attract more investors. we spoke to one man who already invests in apple and is happy about the change. >> i think it's smart. it's a stock that has been unapproachable for most people. i think they are gonna get a lot more investors, more people participate. the financial community will -- they will probably look at it as a positive thing. >> reporter: this move may also bring apple more prestige. analysts say this may pave the way to be included in the dow jones. the dow is the benchmark that is supposed to mirror key sectors of the economy. aning watt not included before because of the high price. it's unclear whether that will change. we'll continue chuck reed will endorse liccardo on the november ballot later this morning. now, liccardo came in second in last tuesday's primary election behind supervisor dave core tease -- dave cortese. another may ear, oakland mayor jean quan involved in a car crash. in 21 minutes, the potentially damaging claims about what she was doing behind the wheel just before the accident. plus -- dangerous sideshows on oakland streets in the middle of the day. the way one oakland couple is taking matters into their own hands when it comes to dealing with the situation in their neighborhood. good morning. we're still looking at traffic where it is going to be a little bit slow in some areas. now, i want to mention the east bay has the slowest traffic. look at highway 24. still slow in la fayette. we'll tell you more about this coming up. it will be another hot one inland. for those of you who battle the west wind and you love the fog. it's on its way. there it is starting to make a push to the golden gate. there's more on in oakland, emma morton and her husband are trying to stop the drivers blamed for these dangerous sideshows from taking over their neighborhood. she filmed this video last sunday afternoon on macarthur and foothill. she says months ago, her husband told the drivers to leave and he was attacked. the sideshows stopped for a while but now it looks like they are starting again. >> i am concerned about the entire community. we have children that cannot play outside. and that's their right. >> just before 5:00 last night, drivers started doing doughnuts in the round-about in front of their house. by the time they got outside with their vic, the cars were -- with their video camera, the drivers were screeching away. grocery workers can barely afford the food they sell on their jobs, a new study says. the study found the average salary of grocery workers fell from $19 an hour in 2000 to $15 an hour in 2012. it also found that one in three workers are getting some kind of public assistance. and one in five ration their food. 925 people were interviewed for the study. it's one of the biggest grocery workers surveys ever completed. thousands of young people from all over the world are headed to silicon valley to be summer interns. companies like google, apple, fawk are off -- facebook, are offering a lot of perks besides the work experience. they also get access to massages, swimming pools, dance classes and a lot more. to top it off, they are paid a monthly salary of more than $5,000. glass door, it's an online career website. it reports that silicon valley tech firms pay their interns more than any other sector in the u.s. a new study shows auto loans in the u.s. are becoming more supercharged than ever. the average loan runs 66 months or five and a half years. that's the longest they've been since experian started to keep track. the average loan is $27,5 homecoming and average month -- $2500,000 and an average monthly payment, $470. the census says more americans over the age of 50 are living together instead of getting married. financial advisers say couples are choosing not to reparry for financial reasons. they say clients would rather cohabitate than lose alimony, pension and social security benefits. high income couples don't want a bigger tax hit. hey, sal, i haven't asked you about highway 24. how are they doing? >> well, i'm glad you asked me that because i have to put it up here, dave. but it will be one of the commutes where traffic on highway 24 is gonna be slow and i think i have it for you. this is highway 24. there we go. 12 minutes. i wouldn't say that that's bad. it's more than it normally is. but, you know, for normal time, it's eight minutes. now it's 24 minutes, now it's 12 getting up to the tunnel. most of this is in la fayette and orinda. let's go to the bay bridge. traffic is backed up for a 25- minute delay. although you can definitely see some improvement here, especially coming in from 880 but there's still a line. 580 is going to be okay and as you can see, the carpool lane is not bad. 80 itself has been very slow. the drive time from the carquinez bridge down to the macarthur maze is slow. most of that time is in richmond. it's taking 37 minutes. so you can see the traffic in hercules have cleared out. but from the richmond area all the way down to the macarthur maze is going to be slow. b.a.r.t. is back on time after earlier delays. now let's go to steve. all right. thank you. a little bit of fog out there. very, very shallow. not making a big push. it's still gonna be a cooker away from the coast. temperatures will be very, very warm. take a look at the water temperatures. they have come up. last week off bodega bay, this week 52, 54, 5. last week it was cooler. it doesn't mean we're done with the northwest wind. it just means for right now, things have changed. fog returns. it won't make much of a deal if you go inland or around the bay. san francisco, i think they will come down from the 78. this is always the tough one. the record is 91, 47. 66, 52 today started off in the 50s. we'll end up in the 72s. i went 72 by noon. 4:00, 5:00, i think a good breeze will work its way in. fog has been on the santa cruz all morning. now filling in on the san mateo and taking a little turn around the golden gate probably the finger that goes out to alcatraz. 78 in fairfield. san jose is almost 70. blossom hill the same thing. 54 san francisco. oakland is already 65. you can see there's a big difference here. there will be a 40, 45-degree spread as long as travis is below 8. that's why they are already 78 degrees. they had a little more northerly breeze. today showing signs of more west-southwest. ukiah is already 70. sacramento is 76. 100 for them. the fog is there. you can see the time line. it kind of disappears today. but tonight it will start to work its way back tomorrow, it will start to pick up. i think we'll see it lift a little bit. it might give us a few high, mid-level clouds. warm to hot for almost everybody unless you are right by the water's edge. 60s, 70s. getting a couple of reports on the peninsula around san carlos, redwood berkeley -- lawrence berkeley national laboratory. he said average temperatures are already up 1 degree centigrade and will keep climbing. he said we should be ready for even more unusual weather. >> we could well under up with much longer droughts than we've had in the past and much bigger floods than we've had in the past. >> dale says california is ahead of the federal government on climate change. our rules on reducing carbon emissions are already stricter than the new regulations announced by the epa last week. >> that's wild. >> yeah. >> more drought and more flood. >> yeah. exactly. oakland mayor jean quan answering some tough questions this morning. she was involved in a controversial car crash late yesterday. the other driver is claiming the mayor was talking to her cell phone at the time and ran a red light. ktvu's alex savidge joining us live now to tell us how mayor quan is responding. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, dave, good morning. i just spike with the mayor's -- spoke with the mayor's spokesperson and he told me that the mayor will likely be speaking publicly later on this morning about yesterday's accident that's drawn quite a bit of attention. the mayor has been adamant that she was not talking on her cell phone at the time of the crash and she's planning to turn over her phone records to police in order to prove it. >> it's on camera. that's mayor quan. >> reporter: this is cell phone video taken after the accident yesterday that shows mayor jean quan checking on the people in the other car. the crash was after 5:30 at 26th and market streets in west oakland. there was no one seriously hurt here and police at that point have not said who they believe was at fault. mayor quan was driving alone in her city-owned lexus suv when she collided with a nissan. the woman driving that nissan claims she had the green light and the mayor went through a red light causing this crash. that other driver also says the mayor appeared to be on her cell phone at the time of the accident. >> i think she's very irresponsible being on the phone. that just shows that -- she's not responsible. >> reporter: the mayor at that time was driving from one church meeting to another in west oakland according to her spokesperson. witnesses tell ktvu, the mayor appeared to be obeying the speed limit in the area and remains there at the accident scene, after it took place to talk with police and to make sure the other people involved were okay. traffic investigators will piece together exactly what took place and they will make a decision about who was at fault in that accident and whether or not anyone, including the mayor, may have been talking on their cell phone at the time of the crash. we've reached to oakland police for an upday. haven't heard back. but the mayor's spokesperson said the mayor in all likelihood will be speaking publicly about yesterday's crash at some point later this morning. we're we are -- we're live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. the oakland police department wants more money to give the police helicopter more time to fight crime. the oakland police department asked the city council for $397,000 starting july 1st to double the amount of time the helicopter can fly, from eight hours to 16 hours a week. the police department claims it can use that helicopter to fly over low priority calls giving patrol officers more time to get to more serious incidents. oakland and san jose are the only bay area cities with police helicopters. 8:35. one of the two sonoma county teens accused of using stole uncredit cards to rent a car is expected in court. sheriff's deputies arrested the 19-year-old on wednesday. he was driving a $240,000 mcclairen coupe which had been reported stolen. he's still in custody. his 19-year-old passenger was also arrested. the pair is accused of using stole encredit cards to rent a $12 -- stolen credit cards to rent a $12 million vacation home. happening today -- the jury will be selected for a concord elementary schoolteacher accused of inappropriately touching his students. 45-year-old joseph martin was arrested last summer after a group of students from woodside elementary claimed he molested them. concord police say an investigation revealed the complaint started back in 2006 but the school district never reported the issue to police. now, martin has pleaded not guilty to 150 counts of molestation. protesters will picket outside of albany's city council. they are angry those living near the albany bulb were evict and ordered to stay away. demonstrators say police have harassed people who live in the bulb. in april, people living in the park were offered $3,000 to leave but only if they promised to stop living in city parks. the protest starts at 7:00 tonight at albany city hall. new reports say hiring a chinese company to build key parts of the new eastern span of the bay bridge turned out to be a very expensive decision. according to the bee, caltrans picked the zenwau company to build the tower because officials thought the company could do the work faster and cheaper. the paper claims caltrans paid the company millions of dollars in completion instentives -- incentives but also spent hundred of millions to fix problems with their work. warning signs are up at a central beach. a great white shark was spotted in the water over the weekend. the santa barbara harbor patrol says at least seven people reported seeing an 8-feet great white shark chasing a sea lion yesterday. harbor patrol shut down the beach. that didn't stop a lot of people from still going out there into the water. >> it's at your own risk. they do their best -- we do our best to keep everyone out of the water, if there was a shark feeding in the area. it would make sense to stay out of the area for at least 24 hours. >> the harbor patrol says in 204, there were two dozen shark sightings in and around the area. only half of those turned out to be credible. a public hearing will be held tonight to discuss the latest proposal to save doctors hospital. the hospital in san pablo is losing money and could close as early as next month. but contra costa county supervisors are now considering a quarter-cent sales tax to help fund public safety. part of that money could be used to help people doctors hospital open. tonight's meeting begins at 6:00 at maple hall. napa state hospital employees are renewing calls for better security. the workers say despite some improvements, violence against staff and patients continues. at noon, labor unions will hold a rally in front of napa state hospital. the rally is in support of a bill that would put secured treatment units at all facilities. the anti-trust case including ed owe bappen and -- o'bannon and keller are suing the ncaa claiming athletes in major sports like football and pabl should be paid for -- basketball should be paid for the use of their name and image. they claim the ncaa and colleges get millions of dollars a year by selling tv rights, players' jerseys and the rights to video games. they say they should get more than just a year to year scholarship. 20 minutes before 9:00. looking for a quick fix. and we're live in livermore where the temperatures are on the rise. there is a lot of rise brush and a serial arsonist on the loose. we'll time in seven years, apple's stock is trading below the $100 mark. in fact, right now, it's trading at $93.09. that's because just a little more than two hours ago this morning, apple did a stock split. that's where each existing share was split into seven shares. police in oakland investigating an accident last night involving a police patrol car and a young woman. it happened around 10:00 last night at 84th and international in east oakland. police say the patrol car hit a young woman as she was walking across the street. we don't know yet if she was in the intersection. she was taken to the hospital but her condition at this point is not known. and firefighters in livermore out there looking for a serial arsonist. they say at least four firefighters have been set in the past couple of days. brian flores is in the area right now. that area where the firefighters are out there looking for clues. good morning, brian. >> reporter: firefighters increased the number to six fires within the last two days. we talked about the hot temperature that are expected today. it's very possible it will reach 100 today. if you include that with the try brush that you see -- dry brush that you see here, especially in the livermore valley, including this arsonist on the loose, that's increasing the risk of fire danger. as we go to a map of where this arsonist is targeting, again, this is around the las positas court, this arsonist lights fires between midnight and 4:00 a.m. the fires are only about .25 to .5 acre in size. a fire captain i spoke with said four small fires popped up late friday night on the south side near a business complex and on a hillside near the rose lawn cemetery and then two more late saturday night on the north side near an apartment complex. while the pattern appears for the arsonist to start fires while the temperatures are at the coolest, the concern is with the dry brush could make the fire spread quickly. officials are asking for the public's help. >> people need to be really, really, really careful, you see drive by chucking their cigarette out the care. i think that should be a large fine, a huge fine. careless bonfires, little barbecues, what have you. everybody needs to be careful. >> reporter: again, we don't know who the arsonist is or how this person is starting the fires. but fire officials say no structures were burned. these are small structures that popped up saturday. the fire department said there were no suspicious fires last night. you are taking a look at the dry brush and the bushed areas where the fires took place. at least six in livermore on friday and saturday. and police and fire will be on high alert. they are asking people if they see anything suspicious to give them a call. we're live in livermore, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. 8:46. it appears to be a random horrifying attack on two police officers eating lunch. ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom with happened in las vegas over the weekend and the ongoing investigation. good morning, pam. >> good morning. there is a lot of new information as police talk with witnesses to the attack which happened in the middle of the day just five miles from the las vegas strip. one woman told the sun newspaper that she was eating at a pizza restaurant and saw a man and a woman walk up to a police officer and shoot him in the head. she said she quickly ducked under her table but then saw them shoot the other officer. investigators say the shooters were a married couple in their 20s. they say after shooting and killing the officers at the pizza restaurant, they ran to a nearby walmart and shot a third person. now, the two officers killed were both veterans with the las vegas police force. 41-year-old alyn beck was with the department for 13 years and leaves behind a wife and three children. 31-year-old igor sold, eight years with the department and leaves behind a wife and baby. the fee mal suspect shot the male inside the walmart as the two exchanged gunfire with police and then shot and killed herself. now, the san francisco police department here showing its support and sympathy for their colleagues in las vegas. the department tweeted a message saying "our hearts and prayers are with the las vegas metro pd family." neighbors of the couple involved in the shooting describe them as militant, say they heard them talk about conspiracy theories. the las vegas review junele reports investigators -- journal reports investigators found swastikas inside the apartment.
