right along the coastline this morning and certain parts of the bay, it will burn off quickly. mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. numbers up over what we saw yesterday, and the extended forecast, warm to hot in some areas. i have those numbers coming up. violence in oakland overnight as police investigate three homicides in five hours. the latest killing happened at 24th avenue and east 24th street. at around 11:00 last night, officers received a call about a body inside an r.v. our camera watched as forensics teams went in and then placed markers on the street outside that r.v. police say evidence at the scene led them to classify the death as suspicious and they have opened up a homicide investigation. earlier in the night oakland police responded to two other deadly shootings around 7:20 p.m. officers were called to 11th and campbell streets. they found a man who was lying in the street, shot and paramedics were unable to save him. he was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity hasn't been released. officers are looking for the gunman. police have made an arrest in another deadly shooting that happened an hour earlier and across town in east oakland. authorities say an argument between two men escalated with one gunning down the other. no word on what caused the argument but investigators believe the men knew each other. occupy the farm protesters will hold a rally this morning to drum up support. demonstrators had planned to crash a private gardening event at a coveted u.c. berkeley owned field in albany. occupiers took over the guild track for three weeks this spring before the school kicked them out. today's gardening was cancelled due to rising tensions, but occupiers say they will go ahead with their rally. right now thousands are walking in san francisco, joining together in the fight against breast cancer. lorraine blanco is live at fort mason where the 10th annual avon walk is about to get under way. >> reporter: good morning, mike. actually it started a few minutes ago. the first leg of a 39.3 mile walk for breast cancer. you can see them going up the hill over there between those trees. this is the 10th annual avon walk here in san francisco. it's a two day event to raise awareness and funds for research. all the money from the event goes directly to local breast cancer organizations. i just talked with the two time cancer survivor, and she says she looks forward to this adventure every year for its camaraderie and inspiration. >> we are a sister hood of strong and amazing women. we each have our own unique stories that we bring to the community. it's not something i would ever invite anybody to join, but once you're in it, it's the most powerful experience you'll have. >> reporter: and you can see right now there's still a few people signing up to get started over here. the walk ends this evening at corta maderra town park. walkers spend the night there and start the second leg of the 39.3 mile walk tomorrow. reporting live in san francisco, lorraine blanco, k.t.v.u. and inmates at san quentin state prison will also participate in the avon walk. they started helping the cause four years ago. this year more than 200 inmates have made donations and have registered to walk in the prison yard. san quentin inmates, staff and volunteers are trying to raise $10,000. new details are emerging from last night's police shooting in oakland. it happened in the mexicali rose restaurant at seventh and clay streets. a woman flagged down two uniformed officers and they noticed a car behind her going on the sidewalk in an attempt to run her down. one officer fired at the driver. that person wasn't hit but the vehicle crashed into a parked police car. the driver has been arrested. according to procedure, the police department's major crimes units and internal affairs division are conducting independent investigations. well, it will be two years tomorrow since a jury found johanis meshurli guilty of involume manslaughter. he spent a total of one year behind bars for the fatal shooting of oscar grant. grant's family will hold a service at 2:00 this afternoon. organizers say the mothers of 10 people killed by police in the last three years will be in attendance, including the family of a teenager gunned down by a police officer last month. occupy protestors planned a march to to sacramento county sheriff's office today to protest police brutality. they say a review board of citizens is needed to review excessive force. officials in santa cruz county are on the lookout for an escaped inmate. the county sheriff's office says 28-year-old richard norman sasse was cleaning the cafeteria of the round tree jail thursday night near watsonville. officials say he blocked a door so it wouldn't lock and then crawled through a food service opening. he was awaiting trial on robbery and carjacking charges. the sheriff's office in santa cruz is also searching for this man. they say he attempted to sexually assault a 17-year-old girl jogging near aptas park thursday evening. he is described as white in his 30s, between 6 and 6 feet 2 inches tall. weighing 250. police say he exposed himself to the girl before trying to grab her. they say she was able to run off and call police. in just about an hour volunteers will resume the search for a missing teenager sierra lamar. lamar was last seen on march 16th as she was getting ready to leave her home for school. 21-year-old antolin garcia torres has been arrested for her kidnapping and murder. at 10 a.m., volunteers will hold a car wash to raise money for the continued search effort. friends and family say they are still holding out hope lamar will be found alive. >>this weekend the california department of fish and game will continue searching for a mountain lion suspected of attacking a marin county man. that happened last weekend in nevada city. the man says he was sleep in a sleeping back when the animal attacked, leaving him with severe cuts and bite wounds. the man was able to drive himself to the hospital and has been released. wildlife officials say they will kill the animal if they find it. firefighters near redding expect to have a wildfire there fully contained later today. the dale fire has burned 1200 acres and is about 60% contained. two buildings have been destroy 1k3-d five homes were damaged. at least 100 people were evacuated but the orders have been lifted. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. investigators think fireworks may have sparked a fire that threatened a famous hillside in south san francisco. news chopper 2 took these pictures of a helicopter pouring water on the brush fire on sign hill yesterday afternoon. sign hill is the home to the phrase south san francisco. the industrial city. the grass fire burned two achers and was contained in one hour. settlement has been reached in a lawsuit over a wildfire in northeastern california back in 2007. the federal government claimed a spark from a bulldozer used by sierra pacific industries and its timber partners caused a massive fire in two counties. both sides settled the lawsuit without disclosing the terms. the government was seeking $700 million. a san jose church choir will be singing a capella tomorrow after burglars stole $25,000 worth of musical instruments. father john fadigo says burglars have broken into the music storage room at our lady of guadalupe church three times in the past two weeks. the church has changed the lock on the storage room but the burglars manage to get in. the father says band members are devastated and have spend countless hours holding fund- raisers to try to buy the instruments. >> this place is held together by dental floss and duct tape. we're struggling to make ends meet. there's not money available immediately to get these instruments replaced. >> the church has put out a donation box to help with replacing the instruments. new this morning, at least 78 people have died after heavy rains triggered flash floods overnight in southern russia. 67 of the deaths are in the hard hit town of crinsk, 750 miles south of moscow. forecasters say torrential rains dropped almost a foot of water near the black sea. many people were asleep when the flood waters hit and were forced to scramble to safety in trees and on roofs. about 5000 homes slivers of fog over the hills. many questions about gun safety remain unanswered in the shooting death of a san jose police officer's young son. investigators are calling it an accident. afully-year-old preston orlando died after a gun went off in his home on thursday. gilroy police say the gun was not officer orlando's service weapon. and other kids in the house were not involved but they still need to figure out exactly how preston was shot, who owned that gun, and how it was stored. >> safe storage would mean in a police where no minor children can get to the gun, right, and think it's a play gun. >> the children's firearm accident prevention act allows for a parent to be prosecuted when the guns are left where children can get to them. if investigators find that was the case, officer orlando could be arrested seven days after that shooting. the discovery of dozens of illegal guns has led to the arrest of one man. there are just some of the 49 weapons seized thursday night. sheriffs deputies say when they went to the home they got there after reports of a fight and found the collection of weapons including a sub machine gun. the man who lived there 50-year- old mike kessner was arrested. this afternoon demonstrates will mark from san francisco's ferry building to the mexican consulate to protest mexico's presidential election. it's part of an international march against the victory of enrique pena nieto. it shows he won by 6 and a half percent but candidates are claiming voter fraud. a formal challenge will be fired next week. another closely watched election, people are heading to the polls in libya today. the lines are long and security is tight, with concerns over violence as voters elect a 200 member legislature. it's the first parliamentary election since the overdegree of gadhafi president obama says he and congress still have plenty of work to do after signing a key piece of legislation. >> i've spent the past couple of days talking with focus about our central challenge as a country. not just reclaiming all the jobs lost to the recession, but reclaiming the economic security that so many americans 1r lost over the last decade. >> the president recorded his weekly address during a visit to ohio. mr. obama talked about the transportation bill he signed into law, a bill he says keeps thousands of construction workers on the job by continuing to fund highway improvement projects. the transportation bill also includes a provision preventing interest rates on many college loans from doubling. facebook and yahoo have reached a settlement in a month long peanut dispute, ending a potentially costly legal battle. the settlement calls for both silicone valley companies to cross-license their pat tenants and expand a advertisement relationship. yahoo filed the lawsuit in march, facebook countersued in april. the settlement doesn't involve any financial compensation. although there were disappointing job numbers for june, analysts say the bay area is still a good place to be right now. yesterday's job report showed another month of weak hiring, not enough jobs are being added to lower the nation's unemployment rate. but, steve wright at the silicon valley leadership group says our region has good reason to be optimistic. >> silicon valley's venture capital is about 40% of the entire country. and so, that means a lot of people are investing in small companies. >> all those investments mean companies are getting the funding needed to hire new workers. wright says the bay area's ticket to prosperity will be innovation, and says cell phones are good examples. apple and google weren't even in the market five years ago. now they own the market and employ thousands of people in that sector. mitt romney did not have such a glowing take on the stagnant job numbers. >> american families are struggling. there's a lot of misery in america today. and these numbers understate what people are feeling. >> romney said he plans to create jobs in the energy industry, and by building the keystone pipeline. he is currently on vacation with his family in new hampshire, and plans to return to the campaign trail after the weekend. president obama emphasized there was some job growth reported, and that's a positive step for america. >> 84,000 new jobs last month. and that overall means that businesses have created 4.4 million new jobs over the past 28 months. >> the president was on a bus tour in pittsburgh when he got back to the white house, he signed a $100 billion bill providing construction work to the nation's crumbling roads and bridges for two more years. tragedy has struck close to home to the president's bus tour through ohio and pennsylvania. yesterday morning, the president stopped at this restaurant in akron, ohio for breakfast. the owner, 70-year-old josephine ann harris hugged and chatted mr. obama during his visit. but shortly after the meeting, harris died of an apparent heart attack. after the president learned of her death, mr. obama called her family from air force 1, and offered his condolence. the city of stockton's bankruptcy proceedings are under way. lawyers for stockton's creditors packed the first hering in federal court in sacramento yesterday. the case continues next month. stockton is the largest city to file for chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in the united states. during the boom, it spent a lot of money on city projects and generous pension and health benefits. then that housing crisis hit and the city couldn't make enough money to pie off its debt oprah winfrey made a $10,000 donation to a stockton city council candidate's campaign. she's supporting michael tubbs. he is 21 years old, a stanford university graduate, and an aspiring politician. tubbs says he first met oprah at a stanford luncheon. if elected, tubbs would be the youngest city council member in stockton history. it raged for weeks, the biggest wildfire in colorado history destroyed hundreds of homes, and now with rain on the way, a new threat for the rocky mountain state. >> here at home a heat-up is under way for the bay area weekend. the numbers are coming up. jury selection is set to start monday in a civil lawsuit involving convicted killer hanz reiser. four years ago reiser was convicted of murdering his wife nina and hiding her body in the oakland hills. the wrongful death lawsuit is on behalf of reiser's 12-year- old son and 11-year-old daughter. attorneys say they filed a suit in the event that reiser has hidden assets. accused serial killer joseph nato wins a key ruling in his upcoming murder trial. a marin county judge approved his request to have a d.n.a. expert analyze the pantyhose of one of his alleged victims. in a hearing last january, a criminalist testified d.n.a. found on the pantyhose likely came from naso. pretrial motions are scheduled for october with jury selection tentatively set for november. naso is representing himself. the largest wildfire in colorado's history is now 98% contained, but there are new concerns about flash flooding today. forecasters say heavy rain could fall on the fire area all weekend, creating the possibility of flash floods on burned hillsides the wall dough canyon fire killed two people and damaged or destroyed more than 350 homes hurricane daniel is churching over the open waters of the pacific ocean this morning. the category 1 hurricane has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles an hour. daniel is slowly moving westward and is currently located more than 700 miles southwest of the southern tip of baja. it's not close to any land and could start weakening over colder waters tomorrow. the country's heat wave is spreading to the northeast. today, philadelphia and new york will hit temperatures of 100 degrees or higher. new york's health department is reminding people, the heat can cause serious illness. excessive heat warnings will stay up for several midwest states today. fort wayne, indiana could reach 106 but it will feel more like 114. six deaths are being blamed on the chicago area's record breaking heat wave. the medical examiner reports heat stress was a contributing factor in those six deaths. most of the victims had underlying health issues, including heart disease and obesity. last night the medical examiner's office said it was getting calls about more deaths that could be heat related. it will start warming up in the bay area, although, rosemary, nothing like in the midwest, especially in chicago. >> absolutely not. the heat will be on especially for the interior area. some of the warmest temps we've seen in weeks. it was back in mid june when we hid 90s, even the century mark in some cases and we have been relatively mild ever since. so again a summary like pattern taking shape for your weekend. this morning at this hour, upper 40s in areas around santa rosa, valley locations over the north bay. most of us steady in the faints at this hour. and even a few low 60s right around san jose. noontime numbers, low 60s for the coast, 70s around the bay. low 80s for some warmer spots inland and then for the afternoon, a few low 90s out there for the hottest spots. along the coast, partly cloudy skies, 63 for the afternoon. and it's going to be comfortable around the bay. so the afternoon sea breeze weakening quite a bit. 69 degrees expected for san francisco today, mid 70s in oakland, 76 for hayward. 80 degrees for you and fremont. headed to the alameda county fair, low 90s in the forecast near pleasanton, livermore, concord, 90 degrees for you, 91 for fairfield. to the north bay, santa rosa checking in at 86 for the second half of the day. the extended forecast there, you can see people walking behind me, dressed in pink right now >> hi! >> reporter: they're walking down beach street. [ cheers ] >> reporter: the 10th annual avon walk for breast cancer in san francisco. a two day event to raise awareness and funds for research. all the money of the event goes directly to local breast cancer organizations. i talked with a two time cancer survivor right before the walkers took off this morning. she says a lot of prep goes into this kind of undertaking but it's worth it. >> it's an energy that i think the avon foundation creates. everybody is here for the same reason and same purpose, and we each have our own individual stories but we really want to make a difference and end breast cancer. >> reporter: you can see just how excited people are right here. they're in great moods. they're screaming, they're shouting, very happy taking pictures with each other right now. the walk ends in the evening at corto madera town park. walkers will spend the night there and the second leg of the walk is tomorrow morning. at least one of the teenagers involved in a serious car crash in alameda has been released from the hospital. ktvu brought you this story yesterday morning. four 15-year-old boys and two girls, actually it was four girls and two boys, were taken to the hospital after the driver lost control and crashed into two trees at high speed around 1:30 in the morning. the driver has life threatening injuries. the teens apparently took the car without their parents' knowledge and there was beer found in the trunk. state lawmakers have given the green light for a plan to build a high-speed rail line that will eventually link los angeles and san francisco. the state senate approved the measure on a 21-16 party line vote yesterday. democratic governor jerry brown and the obama administration say construction of the high- speed rail line will create jobs and benefit the environment. but republicans say the state cannot afford to start such an ambitious project at a time of deep budget cuts. >> we did not have a vote to spare, but i am happy to report that hope trumped fear. >> they're going to see that you cut education. they're going to see that you cut helping families. but they're also going to see that you found money for this monumental, this colossal -- this project, spending money that we simply don't have. >> the bill authorizes the state to begin selling bonds to fund the construction of a 130 mile stretch of the rail line. the first segment of that line will run from madera to bakersfield. critics say starting the project in the central valley is a plan to, quote, build a train to nowhere. supporters say they need to start construction soon and where it's easiest, to guarantee federal funding. the bill also earmarked 1.9 billion dollars for other transit projects, including $600 million to electrify cal train, 140 million for new bart cars and $61 million for san francisco muni's central subway project. volvo's reputation for safety just took a 1.5 million dollar hit. that's how much the car company has agreed to pay for delaying action on seven recalls. the national highway traffic safety administration says volvo failed to report safety defects in a timely manner. the delays involved 32,000 vehicles in 2010, and this year. volvo says it will improve its review process. >> and you may not be able to get on the internet sunday night. if your computer is infected with a common type of malware. the f.b.i. is scheduled to take down temporary servers it put up during a click fraud sting. they set up the servers giving people time to fix their malware infected computers but the servers come down this sunday at 9 p.m. pacific time. >> there will be 10s of thousands of people in the united states who are unaware and who will wake up monday morning and try to go online and find they're not scroll down and look for the web links section on our home page. today is the deadline for wikileaks founder julian assange to be extradited to sweden. he is currently hiding out in the elker do embassy in london. he applied for political asylum last month. the british supreme court dismissed his appeal and ordered assange to surrender by today. two women accuse assange of sexually assaulting them in sweden two years ago. new evidence against a san francisco couple charged with killing their daughter's alleged pimp. san francisco's district attorney says surveillance video and phone records show three of the four defendants in the case talking to each other before and after the deadly shooting last month. >> they were aware that snead was here in san francisco, and we know they did not go to the san francisco police department for help. they instead elected to conspire and go out and kill this individual. >> 22-year-old calvin snead was gunned down in the city's bay view district. he was allegedly pimping the suspect's 17-year-old daughter. the four suspects are being held in lieu of $2 million bail. some legal experts are questioning if jurors ignored a law when they found a man not guilty of a crime, even though he admitted to beating a retired south bay priest. >> i don't think there is a legal basis for it. i mean strictly speaking. this is what -- it looks like a case of jury null fiction, which is not officially countenance. it's not officially allowed. [ cheers and applause ] >> jurors acquitted will lynch of felony assault and elder abuse, saying they felt sympathy for he was allegedly molested by father gerald lindner. legal experts say justice in a jury system is often up to the jurors' interpretation but the real concern is whether this verdict sends a message that people can go free despite taking the law into their own hands. an east bay oil refinery is facing another hazmat situation. yesterday morning, 80 workers at the evergreen oil refinery in newark were evacuated. it happened when 200 gallons of super heated oil leaked from a pipe. one worker was treated at the scene for breathing problems, but no other injuries were reported. back in march, a 50 gallon paint drum at that same refinery exploded. and last year, an even larger explosion injured one employee. evergreen oil has been fined by the state at least 10 times in the past two years for odor releases. the owner four malnourished horses on a private ranch is fashion animal cruelty charges. a call from ktvu helped contra costa animal service involved back in april after a horse enthusiast spotted the emaciated animals. animal control officers arrested their owner earlier this week. he is charged with four counts of animal cruelty. only on 2. a livermore teenager is talk about hire hawaiian vacation that started with a shark bite on the first full day of the 10-day vacation. 16 youth sage st. claire was sitting in about two feet of water at kahana beach when she felt something with a lot of teeth bite her left leg. >> i immediately guessed it was a shark, but no one saw it, so -- i just thought by the feel 38 was a shark. >> experts say she was bitten by a four to five foot long reef shark. st. claire ran up onto the beach to her mother, where they called 911. she received stitches and will have a scar, but no permanent damage. after she was bitten on the beach, the beach was shut down and st. claire learned people had seen the shark the day before, but never reported it. grab a pole and a net, and get ready to reel them in. today is free fishing day. you can fish fresh water lakes without a fishing license today. several bay area lakes are currently stocked with fish, including lake merced, lake barryessom and lakes in the east bay regional park district. the california department of fish and game puts on two free fishing days each year. and if you want to spend the day indoors, it's also a free museum day for many people. bank of america and merrill lynch card holders will receive free admission to the children's creativity museum. the space and science center, contemporary jewish museum, the de young museum and the legion of honor. the offer is good for tomorrow as well. the u.s.s. iowa museum opens to the public today in los angeles county. more than 600 former u.s.s. iowa crew members were on hand for that dedication ceremony on wednesday. the museum is expected to attract up to 500,000 visitors a year. the battle ship left the bay area back on may 26th. the american idol live tour is now under way. it kicked off last night in detroit. season 11 winner phillip phillips and the rest of the top 10 finalists say they are looking forward to performing in front of 10s of thousands of fans. san jose teenager deon during that barackensic is on that tour and excited about living on the tour bus. >> we're all caught on each other and stuff, so i don't know how that's going to work. we have some snorers and stuff, so it's going to be so much fun to look forward to. i can't wait for the snoring. began back in 1924. the u.s. is extending an olive branch to afghanistan. the administration nobsed it's declared afghanistan as a major non-nato ally. it makes it easier for the afghan president to acquire american defense equipment and military technology. tensions between the two countries have been high since the desecration of the quran at an american military base in kabul. afghanistan joins 14 other countries receiving that declaration, including israel, japan and australia. there are two new members on the california state university board of trustees. governor jerry brown named lupe garcia and hugo morales to the board. garcia is from alameda, and is an attorney for the gap clothing company. morales is also an attorney, and has worked on behalf of migrant laborers. a quarantine order has been lifted for cheese produced by the endonte dairy of pet petaluma. no one has reported getting sick after eating the cheese. there are a few cheeses exempt from that quarantine. more than 2000 best buy employees are out of a job this morning. the electronics retailer announced it's laying off 600 of its geek squad employees, and 1800 other employees nationwide. the layoffs represent 1.5% of best buy's overall workforce. best buy says the layoffs are part of a larger turn-around plan announced in march. 5 magazine geared toward teenage girls is making a promise to stop air brushing its photos. 17 magazine is calling it a body peace treaty. the magazine says it won't digitally change the shape of models' bodies. 17 is also vowing to feature models regardless of size. a 14-year-old girl from maine led the crew said against the altered photos, saying girls feel pressured to meet a body image standard that is often unrealistic. people affected by a malcollapse in canada have filed a $30 million lawsuit. they are suing the owners and local government for injuries and debts in the mall in elliott lake, on tear i can't. a few warnings of dangerous safety conditions were ignored and allege the collapse could have been prevented with proper inspections. earlier this week police began a criminal investigation. that collapse killed two people. a massachusetts man just paid off his mortgage in pennies. they purchased their home 35 years ago, and dagel has made a mission to make their final mortgage payment in pennies ever since. check out that stash. he said on snowy days he'd make ate point to roll pennies for that final payment and he says each box of rolled pennies weighs about 210 pounds. >> 63,000 pennies later, a little bit more than that, but 63,000 and change, we paid our mortgage off. >> well, it did take the bank more than two days to count all of those pennies. coincidentally, the couple's 35th anniversary fell on the same day that they paid off their mortgage. an antioc man is now 250,000 richer after buying a winning scratchers ticket. that ticket was bought if he 7- eleven store on hill crest avenue. tommy arvizo says at first he thought he won $25. the extra zeroes were discovered after he took it back from a family member who was about to throw it in the trash. he says he will use that money to help his family, invest in his home and buy a new guitar. ospreys have returned to san francisco. our camera captured this video of one of the ospreys yesterday. the eagle like bird's nest is on top of a crane at pier 80. they have a six foot wing span and environmentalists say their return to the city means the water is healthy and also clear enough that the birds can see the fish they hunt and eat to survive. >> this is a tremendous testimony to the success of these environmental restoration efforts. and the volunteers have put thousands and thousands of hours into them. >> there used to be a lot of the bay area ospreys before the gold rush. population and later d.d.t. nearly wiped them out. the round for this year's walnut creek marathon is being changed. the new route has runners like warm-up is in the forecast for the bay area. we will have a look at the numbers coming up. well, george zimmerman is out of jail in florida but the former neighborhood watch volunteer is under several restrictions. zimmerman is facing second degree murder charges in the shooting gets of teenager trayvon martin. he is free on $1 million bail. his $150,000 bond was revoked last month after a usage ruled zimmerman hid some assets. zimmerman is being electronically monitored and has a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. the assets commission looking into suspended sheriff ross mere kramey, is going to raise testimony about mayor ed lee. they say they wanted to challenge lee's testimony when he said he did not suggest a deal to offer the sheriff a job if he resigned. the former supervisor says lee did. if san francisco attorney's office says it's raising questions of perjury. >> if the evidence surfaces, after we have sworn testimony to indicate that perjury has taken place, then we will certainly evaluate whether that would be appropriate to prosecute. >> did you file these charges -- >> the defense also plans to call a current supervisor and the building department commissioner about what lee said about discussing the case with members of the board. a san francisco car wash accused of withholding wages is shelling out thousands in a settlement deal. tower car wash has agreed to pay $500,000 in back wages, plus 70,000 in fees. this comes after a lawsuit accusing the business of cheating employees out of pay. workers say they were kept in a room and not allowed to clock in until cars started to arrive. the lawsuit was filed last august. miami firefighters say it's one of the most unusual calls they've ever responded to, an iguana trapped in a car. it happened after a worker at the miami sea say conveyor yum was driving home and realized there was an iguana trapped inside his dashboard. he pulled over and called 911. if >> as soon as he pulled out of the acquarium, realized he had a three and a half or four foot iguana inside of his vehicle. >> it took about 15 minutes -- oh, there he is, glad to be free. 15 minutes to rescue that iguana. they're still unsure yesterday. we have clouds above the coastline but they're burning off later this morning. a weak on shore breeze through the afternoon and again the numbers warmer, 60s at the coast, low 90s for some inland spots. we'll take a look around coming up. we have new information about violence overnight in oakland, where police have been investigating three homicides in five hours. the latest killing happened at 24th avenue and east 24th street. around 11 last night, a mail caller told police he had -- male caller told police he had killed a man and left his body in an r.v. our camera watched as forensic teams went in and placed markers along the street. police haven't released a cause of death but have opened a home size investigation. the alleged killer is at large but investigators say they know who he is earlier in the night oakland police responded to two other deadly shootings. around 7:20 p.m. officers were called to the area of 11th and campbell streets. they found a man who had been shot lying in the street. paramedics were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. his identity hasn't been released and officers are now looking for the gunman. police have made an arrest in another deadly shooting that happened about an hour earlier across town in east oakland. authorities say an argument between two men escalated, and then one gunned the other down. there's no word on what caused the argument but investigators believe the men knew each other. new details are emerging from last night's police shooting in oakland. it's happened near the mexicali rose restaurant at 7th and clay streets as a woman flagged down two uniformed officers for help. police then noticed a car behind her going onto the sidewalk, in an apartment attempt to run her -- apparent attempt to run her down. one officer fired at the driver. that person was not hit but the vehicle crashed into a parked police car. the driver has been arrested, and according to procedure, the police department's major crimes unit and internal affairs division are now conducting independent investigations. occupy the farm protesters will hold a rally this morning to drum up support. demonstrators had planned to crash what they called an invite only harvesting party at a coveted u.c. berkeley owned field in albany. occupiers took over the guild track for three weeks this last spring before the school kicked them out. today's garden event was cancelled because of rising tensions but occupiers say they are going to go ahead with their rally. >> many questions about gun safety remain unanswered in the shooting death of a san hoe apolice officer's young son. investigators are calling it an accident. three-year-old preston orlando died after a gun went off on his gilroy home on thursday. police say the gun was not officer orlando's service weapon. and other children in the house were not involved. but they still say that they need to figure out exactly how preston was shot, who owned the gun, and how it was stored. >> safe storage would mean in a place where no minor children can get to the gun, right, and think it's a play gun. >> the children's firearm accident prevention act allows for a parent to be prosecuted when guns are left where children can get them. if investigators find that was the case, officer orlando could be arrested seven days after the shooting. dozens over illegal guilt or innocence have been seized from the home in contra costa county. these 49 weapons were taken thursday night. deputies say they were called to the bay point house after reports of a fight and found the weapons. the collection concluded an uzi sub machine gun. a man who lived there, 50-year- old mike kessner was arrested. right now volunteers are checking in at morgan hill's burnett elementary school to begin searching for sierra lamar. she was last seen on march 16th as she got ready nor school. a 21-year-old man has been arrested for her kidnapping and murder. at 10 a.m. volunteers will hold a car wash as well to raise money for those continued search efforts. her friends and family say they are still holding out hope that she will be found alive. right now hundreds of people are walking in san francisco to end breast cancer. it's called the avon walk for breast cancer, and it got under way about an hour ago at fort mason. the walk continues across the gold gate bridge, and on into corta maderra. >> we are a sister hood of strong and amazing women. we each have our own unique stories we bring to the community. it's not something i would ever invite anyone to join but it's the most powerful experience you'll have. >> some walkers will cover up to 39.3 miles today and tomorrow. proceeds from the walk will fund breast cancer research or medical care for low income patients in the bay area. ktvu's lorraine blanco will have a live report coming up along the rowed at 8:30. inmates at san quentin prison will also participate in that avon walk. they started helping the cause four years ago, and this year, more than 200 inmates have made donations and have registered to walk in the prison yard. staff and volunteers and inmates are trying to raise $10,000. a san jose church choir will be singing a capella after burglars stole $25,000 of musical instruments. burglars have broken into the music storage room at our lady of guadalupe church three times in the past two weeks. the church has changed the lock on the room but the burglars still manage to find a way in. father petigo says band members are devastated and have spend countless hours holding fund- raisers to buy the instruments. >> this place is really kind of held together by dental floss, and duct tape in a lot of ways. we're really struggling to make ends meet. so there's not money available immediately to get this -- to get these instruments replaced. >> the church has put out a donation box to help with replacing the instruments. >>this weekend the california department of fish and game will continue searching for a mountain lion suspected of attacking a marin county man. that attack happened last weekend near the yuba history in nevada city. the man says he was sleep in his sleeping bag when the animal attacked leaving him with severe cuts and bite wounds. the man was able to drive himself to the hospital and has since been released. wildlife officials say they will kill the animal if they find it. the country's heat wave is spreading to the northeast. today philadelphia and new york will hit temperatures of 100 degrees or higher. new york's health department is reminding people the heat can cause serious illnesses. excessive heat warnings will stay up for several midwest states today. temperatures in fort wayne, indiana, could reach 106. but feel more like 114. six deaths #r being blamed on the chicago area's record breaking heat wave. the medical examiner reported heat stress was a contributing factor in those six deaths. most of the victims had underlying health issues, including heart disease and obesity. last night, the medical examiner's office said it was getting calls about more deaths that could be heat related. firefighters near redding expect to have a wildfire fully contained later today. the dale fire has burned 1200 achers and is about 60% contained. two buildings have been destroyed and five homes were damaged. at least 100 people were evacuated. but those orders have now been lifted. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. investigators think fireworks may have sparked a fire that threatened a famous hillside in south san francisco. news chopter 2 took these pictures of that helicopter pouring water on the brush fire up on sign hill yesterday afternoon. sign hill, of course, is the home to the phrase south san francisco, the industrial city. the grass fire burned two achers and was contained in about an hour. good morning to you. we're transitions to positive. >> 84,000 new jobs last month. and that overall means that businesses have created 4.4 million new jobs over the past 28 months. >> the president was on a bus tour in pittsburgh, and when he got back to the white house, he signed a $100 billion bill providing construction work on the nation's crumbling roads and bridges for two more years. president obama is offering his condolences to a family in ohio after a woman died shortly after meeting him. yesterday morning, the president stopped at this restaurant in akron, ohio for breakfast. the owner, 70-year-old josephine ann harris, hugged and chatted with mr. obama during his visit. but shortly after meeting him, harris died of an apparent heart attack. after hearing of her death, the president called her family from air force 1. facebook and yahoo have reached a settlement in a month long patent dispute ending a potentially costly legal battle. settlement calls for both companies to cross-license their patents and expand an advertising partnership. yahoo filed that patent lawsuit in march alleging that facebook infringed on 10 of its patents. facebook countersued in april. the settlement does not involve any financial compensation. the f.b.i. is on the hunt for a person who pointed a laser at two planes on final proosh to san francisco international aft. they say the first incident happened at 10:25 thursday night as a united express flight prepared to land at s.f.o. four minutes later, the same thing happened to a virgin american flight arriving from chicago. pilots say pointing a laser at the cockpit can have deadly consequences. >> we have instruments in there that we have to kind of pay attention to, and our main thing as a helicopter pilot we're focused on outside reference to keep ourselves balanced and set up on a hover. so when we lose that visual field, it could turn into something very tragic. >> both flights landed safely. the f.a.a. believes the laser strike may have originated somewhere near palo alto. an escaped inmate is on the loose in santa cruz county. the santa cruz county sheriff's office says 28-year-old richard norman sasse was cleaning the cafeteria of the round tree jail thursday night near watsonville. he blocked the doors so it wouldn't walk and crawled through a food service opening. he was awaiting trial on robbery and carjack charges. well, this man is also wanted in santa cruz county for allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage girl. santa cruz county sheriff deputies say he approached the 17-year-old girl jogging in a park thursday evening. police say he exposed himself to the girl before trying to grab her. he is described as white, in his 30s, between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall. weighing about 250 pounds. cushioned serial killer joseph naso wins a key ruling in his upcoming murder trial. a marin county judge approved his request to have a d.n.a. expert analyze the pantyhose of one of his alleged victims. in a preliminary hearing last january, a criminallologist testified d.n.a. found on the pantyhose likely came from naso. pretrial motions are scheduled for october with jury selection tentatively set for november. naso is representing himself. jury selection is set to start monday in a civil lawsuit involving convicted killer hanz reiser. four years ago, reiser was convicted of murdering his wife nina and hiding her body in the oakland hills. the wrongful death lawsuit is on behalf of reiser's 12-year- old son and 11-year-old daughter. attorneys say they filed that suit in the event that reiser has hidden assets. the city of stockton's bankruptcy proceedings are under way. lawyers for stockton's creditors packed the first hearing in federal court in sacramento yesterday. the case continues next month. stockton is the largest city to file for chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in the u.s. during the boom, it spent a little of money on city projects, and generous pension and health benefits. then the housing crisis hit and the city could not make enough money to pay off its debt. oprah winfrey made ad 10,000 donation to a stockton city council candidate's campaign. she is supporting michael tubbs. he is 21 years old, a stanford university graduate, and an aspiring politician. tubbs says he first met oprah at a stanford luncheon. if elected, tubbs would be the youngest city council member in >> it's very liberating. i'll tell you that. i have fun it with. it's a good time. the ladies love it and they get a kick out of it. >> reporter: the walk ends this evening at corta madera town park. walkers spend the night there and start the second leg of the walk early tomorrow morning. all the money goes directly to local breast cancer research organizations. and you can see people are very excited out here right now. they're going to be walking a little more than 20 miles today, and then tomorrow they'll start again and go on a half marathon. live in san francisco, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2. state lawmakers have given the green light for a plan to build a high speed rail line that will eventually link los angeles and san francisco. the state senate approved the measure in a 21-16 party line vote yesterday. democratic governor jerry brown and the obama administration say construction of the high speed rail line will create jobs and benefit the environment. but republicans say the state cannot afford to start such an ambitious project at a time of deep budget cuts. >> we did not have a vote to spare, but i am happy to report that hope trumped fear. >> they're going see that you cut education. they're going to see that you cut helping families. but they're also going to see that you found money for this monumental, this colossal, this project, spending money that we simply don't have. >> the bill authorizes the state to begin selling bonds to fund the construction of the 130 mile stretch of the rail line. that first segment of the line will run from madera to bakersfield. critics say starting the project in the central valley is a plan to quote build a train to nowhere. supporters say they need to start construction soon and where it's easiest, to guarantee federal funding. the bill also earmarked 1.9 billion for other transit projects, including 600 million to electrify cal train, 140 million for new bart cars, and 61 million dollars for san francisco muni's central subway project. occupy protesters plan to march to the sacramento county sheriff's office today, to protest police brutality. protesters say a citizens review board is needed to review claims of excessive force. that master is schedule toed begin at cesear chavez park in sacramento at noon. and it will be two years tomorrow since a jury found johanis mezerly guilty of involuntary manslaughter. the former police officer spent one year behind bars for the fatal shooting of oscar grant. grant's family will hold a community service at 2:00 this afternoon. organizers say the morse of 10 people killed by police in the past three years will be in attendance. they include the family of a teenager gunned down by south san francisco police last month. at least one teenager involved in a serious car crash in alameda has been released from the hospital. ktvu brought you the story yesterday morning. the victims included five 15- year-olds and one 13-year-old. police say the 15-year-old driver lost control and crashed into two trees at high speed around 1:30 a.m. he suffered life threatening injuries. the teenagers took the car without their parents' knowledge and alcohol was found in the trunk. a memorial race will be held tomorrow for a jockey who died at the alameda county fair. horse racing resumed at the fair yesterday after a moment of science for jorge herrera. he was riding the number 8 horse thursday when he clipped another horse's heels. herrera fell over his horse's head onto the track, and was trampled. >> george loved being out there. loved competing against these california riders. you know, he -- he totally enjoyed it. he died doing what he loved to do. >> herrera was from mexico but lived in southern california. this is the first time a tragedy like to has happened in 37 years. the horse wasn't hurt and the california horse racing board is investigating that accident. there is new evidence against a san francisco couple charged with killing their daughter's alleged pimp. san francisco's district attorney says surveillance video and phone records show three of the four defendants in the case talking to each other before and after the deadly shooting last month. >> they were aware that snead was here in san francisco, and we know that they did not go to the san francisco police department for help. they instead elected to conspire and go out and kill this individual. >> 22-year-old calvin snead was gunned down in the city's bay view district. he was allegedly pimping the suspect's 17-year-old daughter. the four suspects are being held in lieu of $2 million bail. legal experts are questioning if jurors ignored a law when they found a man not guilty of a crime, even though he admitted to beating a retired south bay priest. >> i don't think there is a legal basis for it. i mean strictly speaking. this is what -- it looks like a case of jury null fiction. which is not officially countenance. it's not officially allowed. [ cheers and applause ] >> jurors acquitted will lynch of felony assault and elder abuse saying they felt sympathy for the fact that he was allegedly molested by father gerald lindner. legal experts say justice in the jury system is often up to the jurors' interpretation but the real concern is whether this verdict sends a message that people can go free despite taking the law into their own hands. an east bay oil refine 53 fashion another hazmat investigation. yesterday morning, 80 employees at the evergreen oil refinery in newark were evacuated. it happened when about 200 gallons of super heated oil leaked from a pipe. one worker was treated at the scene for breathing problems. no other injuries were reported. in march, a 50 gallon paint drum at the same refinery exploded, and last year, an even larger explosion injured one employee. evergreen oil has been fined by the state at least 10 times in the past two years for odor releases. only on 2, a livermore teenager is talking about the shark bite that made her a local celebrity on her hawaiian vacation. on the first full day of a 10 day maui vacation. 16-year-old sage st. claire was sitting in two feet of water at a kahana beach. she felt something with a lot of teeth bite her leg. >> i immediately guessed it was a shark, but no one saw it, so -- i just thought by the feeling that it was a shark. >> well, experts say she was bitten by a four to five foot long reef shark. st. claire ran up to the beach where her mother called 911. she got some stitches as you can see there, but she's not likely to have a scar, and she won't have any permanent damage. the beach was closed and her story made the local news. she said people in maui started recognizing her on the street. you may not be able to log onto the internet sunday night if your computer is infected with a common type of malware. that's because the f.b.i. is scheduled to take down temporary servers it put up during a click fraud sting. the f. bi set up the temporary servers to give users time to fix their malware infected computers. but the servers are coming down this sunday at 9 p.m. pacific time. >> they're going to be 10s of thousands along the coastline this morning. high pressure building our way, and that has really compressed the marine layer, and it could be even a little thick and dense along the coastline. we are going to see a quick burn-off, already seeing it this morning and the winds, the onshore breeze is very weak. you can see a week west/southwesterly wind in fairfield, only at eight miles per hour. that means clipped from that delta breeze for you, and as a result, we usually feel that heat up, right along the coastline, the winds are a northwesterly direction, and that's also going to help to eat away at that low cloud deck. for the morning hours, we will see that burn away. for the afternoon, partly cloudy skies for the coast, mostly clear skies for the rest of us, and the ridge of high pressure sunny skies over oakland this morning. numbers anywhere from 3 to 6 above yesterday's start. the death toll is rising in russia. at least 99 people are dead after heavy rains triggered flash floods in the southern part of the country. many people were asleep when the flood waters hit and were forced to scramble to safety in trees and on roofs. about 5,000 homes have flooded. people affected by a mall collapse in canada have filed a $30 million lawsuit. they are suing the owners and local government for injuries and deaths in the algo center mall in elliott lake, ontario. they say warnings of dangerous safety conditions were ignored and allege the collapse could have been prevented with proper inspections. earlier this week police began a criminal investigation. that collapse nearly two weeks ago killed two. we are waiting to here if wikileaks founder julian assange will be extradited to swede deny. today is the court appointed deadline. assange is currently hiding out in the ecuadorian embassy in london. he applied for political asylum last month. the british supreme court dismissed his appeal and ordered assange to surrender by today. two women accused assange of sexually assaulting them while he was in sweden two years ago. george zimmerman is out of jail in florida but the former neighborhood watch volunteer is still under several restrictions. he is facing second degree murder charges in the shooting death of trayvon martin. he is free on $1 million bail. now his 150,000 bond was revoked last month. after a judge ruled that zimmerman hid some assets. zimmerman is being electronically monitored and does have a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew. the ethics commission looking into suspended san francisco sheriff will meet again in a week and a half. the next hearing is expected to raise questions about the testimony of mayor ed lee. the sheriff's attorney says they want to challenge lee's testimony when he said he did not suggest a deal to offer the sheriff a job if he resigned. the former supervisor aaron peskin says lee did. san francisco's district attorney says it is raising questions of perjury. >> if the evidence surfaces, after we have sworn testimony to indicate that perjury has taken place, then we will certainly evaluate whether that would be appropriate to prosecute. >> the defense also plans to call the current supervisor and the building department commissioner about what lee said about discussing the case with members of the board. after signing a key piece of legislation, president obama says he and congress still have plenty of work to do. >> i've spent the past couple of days talking with focus about our central challenge as a country. not just reclaiming all the jobs lost to the recession, but reclaiming the economic security that so many americans have lost over the last decade. >> the president recorded his weekly address during a visit to ohio. mr. obama talked about the transportation bill he signed into law, a bill he says keeps thousands of construction workers on the job by continuing to fund highway improvement projects. the transportation bill also includes a provision preventing interest rates on many college loans from doubling. >> more than 2000 best buy employees are out of a job this morning. the electronics retailer announced its laying off 600 of its geek squad employees, and 1800 other workers nationwide. the layoffs represent 1.5% of best buys overall workforce. best buy says the layoffs are part of a larger turn-around plan announced in march. volvo's reputation for safety just took a 1.5 million dollar hit. that is how much the car company has agreed to pay for delaying action on seven recalls. the unusual highway traffic safety administration says volvo failed to report safety defects in a timely manner. the delays involved 32,000 vehicles in 2010, and this year. volvo says it will improve its review process. a quarantine order has been lifted for cheese produced by the andonte dairy in petaluma. officials recalled most varieties of cheese produced by the dairy amidst kearns about a lack of proper pasturization. no one has reported getting sick after eating the cheese. there are several cheeses exempt from the quarantine. ospreys have returned to san francisco. our camera captured this video, there it is. the eagle-like bird's nest is on top of a crane at pier 80. ospreys have a six foot wing span and environmentalists say the return to the city means the water is healthy and clear enough so the birds can see the fish they hunt and eat to survive. >> this is a tremendous testimony to the success of these environmental restoration efforts. and the volunteers who put thousands and thousands of hours into them. >> there used to be a lot of bay area ospreys before the gold rush, exclusion later d.d.t. nearly wiped them out, but the birds at pier 80 have a chick and experts hope it will be flying and fishing by summer's end. a massachusetts man just paid off his mortgage with pennies. when thomas dagle and his wife purchased their waive 35 years ago, he made it his mission to make their final mortgage payment in pennies, so he began collecting pennys and on snowy days he'd make ate point to roll the pennies. >> 63,000 pennies later, a little bit more than that, but 63,000 and change, we paid our mortgage off. >> deagle says each box of rolled pennies weighed about 210 pounds and it took the bank more than 2 days to count all those pennies. coincidentally, the couple's 35th anniversary fell on the same day they paid december 8th. the annual filmore jazz festival returns to san francisco today. the 28th annual celebration of music, food and art begins at 10:00 this morning. filmore street between jackson and eddie street will be shut down. the jazz festival continues tomorrow. miami firefighters say it's one of the most unusual calls they've ever responded to. an iguana trapped in a car. it happened friday afternoon when a worker at the miami sea acquarium was driving home and he realized there was something inside his dashboard. somehow he realized it was an iguana and called 911. >> as soon as he pulled out of the acquarium, realized he had a three and a half or four foot iguana inside his vehicle. >> check it out. they pull it out of the car. that iguana. wow. it took 15 minutes to get it most places. partly cloudy for the coast. for the afternoon, a few degrees warmer. the extended forecast, we remain with warm to hot temperatures. we'll take a look, coming up. . violence in oakland overnight, as police investigate three separate homicides that happened over a span of 5 hours. the latest killing happened at 24th avenue and east 24th street. around 11:00 last night, a male caller told police he had killed a man and left his body in an rv. our camera was there as the forensics team went in and then police placed markers along that street. police have not released a cause of death, but have opened up a homicide investigation. the alleged killer is still at large, but investigators say they know who he is. earlier in the night, oakland police responded to two other deadly shootings. around 7:20 p.m., officers were called to the area of 11th and campbell streets and they found a man who had been shot lying in the street. paramedics were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. his identity hasn't been released. officers are still looking for the gunman. police have, however, made an arrest in another deadly shooting that happened about an hour earlier and across town in east oakland. authorities say the argument between two men escalated and ended when one man gunned the other one down. there's no word on what caused that argument, but investigators believe the men did know each other. well, occupy the farm protesters aren't going to hold a rally this morning to try to drum up support. demonstrators had planned to crash what they called an invite-only harvesting party at a coveted uc berkeley-owned field in albany. occupiers took over the tract in the spring before school officials kicked them out. today's gardening event was canceled due to rising tensions, but occupiers say they will go ahead with their rally anyway. . happening right now, more than 2000 people are walking through the streets of san francisco, raising money for breast cancer research. ktvu's lorainne blanco is live this morning with us, with more on this year's huge turnout. >> reporter: yeah, we're live at washington square park in the city, and people are all dressed in pink today for breast cancer awareness. my favorite outfit of the day has to be the san jose police department outfits. they are in tutu's, got bling all over them. they are just awesome supporters out here today. this is miles 4 resting point. more than 2000 people laced up their kicks and took off at port mason this morning, through chinatown, here to north beach. this is the 10th annual avon walk for breast cancer here in san francisco. it's a two-day event to raise awareness and funds for research. the first leg of the walk, of the 39.3-mile walk is about the distance of a marathon. the second half is a half marathon, definitely a challenge. >> people underestimate. you got to train. walking this far is not like running or anything else. i mean, it doesn't matter how old you are, how young you are, it's training, equipment, just having the mental stamina to do it, and always have a friend with you. >> reporter: meredith had a pink ribbon shaved into her head on both sides. she says they are penance for not doing the walk last year. walkers will spend the night at the park and start the second leg of the 39.3-mile walk early tomorrow morning. good news, all of the money raised from the event, millions of dollars, will go to local cancer organizations here. reporting live in san francisco, lorainne blanco, ktvu channel 2news. inmates at san quintin state prison will also participate in the walk. they started helping the cause four years ago. this year, more than 200 inmates have made donations and registered to walk in the prison yard. inmates, staff and volunteers are trying to raise $10,000. new details are emerging from last night's police shooting in oakland. it happened near the mexicali rose restaurant at 7th and clay streets. a woman flagged down two uniformed officers for help and police say they then noticed a car behind her going onto the sidewalk in an apparent attempt to run her down. one of the officers fired at the driver. the driver wasn't hit, but the vehicle did crash into a parked police car. the driver has now been arrested and according to procedure, the police department's major crimes unit and internal affairs division are now conducting independent investigations. many questions about gun safety remain unanswered in the shooting death of a san jose police officer's young son. investigators are calling it an accident. 3-year-old preston orlando died after a gun went off inside his gilroy home on thursday. gilroy police say the gun was not officer orlando's service weapon and other children in the house were not involved. but they still need to figure out exactly how the boy was shot, who owned the gun, and how it was stored. >> safe storage would mean in a place where no minor children can get to the gun and think it's a play gun. >> the children's firearm accident prevention act allows for a parent to be prosecuted when guns are left where children can get them. if investigators find that that was the case, officer orlando could be arrested seven days after the shooting. well, the discovery of dozens of illegal guns has led to the arrest of one man. these are just some of the 49 weapons seized thursday night from a home in bay point. contra costa county sheriffs deputies went to the house after the report of a fight. they say the collection of weapons included an oozy submachine gun. the man who lived there, 50-year-old mike cease inner was arrested. volunteers are searching for missing teenager sierra lahr. she was last seen on march 13th as she was getting ready to leave her mother began hill home for school. garcia has been arrested for her kidnapping and murder. at 10:00 a.m., volunteers will hold a car wash as well to raise money for those continued search efforts. her friends and family say they are still holding out hope that lamar will be found alive. a san jose church choir will be singing acapella tomorrow after burglars stole $25,000 worth of musical instruments. father john pet go says burglars have broken into the music storage room at the church over the past three weeks. the lock had been changed, but the burglars still found a way in. band members are devastated and have spent countless hours holding fund-raisers to buy the instruments. >> this place is held together by dental floss and duct tape in a lot of ways. we're really struggling to make ends meet. so there's not money available immediately to get these instruments replaced. >> the church has put out a donation box to help with replacing the instruments. this weekend, the california department of fish & game will continue searching for the mountain lion suspected of attacking a marijn county man. this all happened last weekend near the yuva river in nevada city. the man says he was asleep in his sleeping bag when the animal attacked him, leaving him with severe cuts and bite wounds. now, he was able to drive himself to the hospital and he has since been released. wildlife officials say they will kill the animal if they find it. the country's heat wave is spreading to the northeast. today, philadelphia and new york will hit temperatures of 100 degrees or higher. new york's health department is reminding people the heat can cause serious illnesses. excessive heat warnings will stay up for several midwest states today. temperatures in fort wayne, to two foreign elections. there's less than two hours before the polls close in libya, but time may be extended due to long lines there. security is also tight with concerns over violence, as voters elect a 200-member legislature, the first parliamentary election since the death of moammar gadhafi. the mexican presidential election is being protested today. the official count shows the winner by 6 1/2%. however, opponents are claiming voter fraud. the candidate who finished second in that race is going to file a formal challenge next week. this afternoon, demonstrators will march this afternoon to the mexican consulate in support of the challenge. international donors are pledging $16 billion in aide for afghanistan this morning. the donation aims to help stabilize the country after most foreign combat troops depart at the end of 2014. the u.s. portion of the donation is expected to be at least $1 billion and the money is expected to come with conditions to avoid corruption and mismanagement. an official announcement is expected tomorrow. well, the u.s. is extending an olive branch to afghanistan. the administration announced it has declared afghanistan as a major non-nato ally. that designation makes it easier for the afghan president hamid karzai to appoint american defense equipment and military technology. tensions between the two countries have been high since the desecration of the quran at an american military base in kabul. afghanistan joins 14 other countries receiving that declaration. they include israel, japan, and australia. although there were disappointing job numbers for june analyst day, the bay area is still a very good place to be right now. yesterday's jobs report showed another month of weak hiring, just not enough jobs being added to lower the nation's unemployment rate. but steve wright at the silicon valley leadership group says our region has good reason to be optimistic. >> silicon valley is a venture capital, is about 40% of the entire country and so that means a lot of people are investing in small companies. >> all those investments mean companies are getting the funding needed to hire new workers. wright says the bay area's ticket to prosperity will be innovation. he says cell phones are a good example. apple and google weren't even in the market five years ago and now they own the market and employ thousands of people in that sector. well, mitt romney did not have such a glowing take on the stagnant job numbers. >> american families are struggling. there's a lot of misery in america today. and and bridges to two more years. tragedy has struck close to the president's bus tour. yesterday morning, the president's bus stopped at this restaurant in akron, ohio. shortly after the meeting, a man died of an apparent heart attack. after the president learned of her death, mr. obama called her family from air force one and offered his condolences. the fbi is on the hunt for the person who pointed a laser at two planes on final approach to san francisco international airport. the faa says the first incident happened at 10:25 p.m. thursday night, as a united express flight prepared to land at sfo. four minutes later, the same thing happened to a virgin america flight arriving from chicago. pilots say pointing a laser at the cockpit can have deadly consequences. >> we have instruments in there that we have to kind of pay attention to, and our main thing as a helicopter pilot, we're focused on outside reference to keep ours balanced and on a hover. when we lose that visual field, it could turn into something very tragic. >> both flights did land safely. the faa believes the laser strike may have originated near paoloal toa. officials in santa cruz county are on the lookout for an escaped inmate. the sheriff's office says 28-year-old richard norman sass was cleaning the cafeteria of the roundtree jail thursday night near watsonville. officials say he blocked a door so it would not lock and then crawled through a foodservice opening. he was awaiting trial on robbery and car jacking charges. accused serial killer joseph naso -- a criminalist testified dna testified on the panty hose likely came from naso. pretrial motions in october with jury selection tentatively set for november. naso is representing himself. jury selection will start monday in a civil suit in the case of riser. the wrongful death lawsuit is on behalf of riser's 12-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter. attorneys say they filed the suit in the event that riser may have hidden assets. the largest wildfire in colorado's history is now 98% contained, but there are new concerns about flash flooding today. forecasters say heavy rain could fall on the fire area all weekend, creating the possibility of flash floods on burned hillsides. the waldo canyon fire killed three people and destroyed more than 250 homes. the dale fire has burned 1200 acres sand about 60% contained. two buildings have been destroyed and five homes damaged. at least 100 people were evacuated. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. investigators think fireworks may have sparked a fire that threatened a famous hillside in south san francisco. news chopper 2 took pictures of the helicopter pouring water on the brush fire on the hill yesterday afternoon, home to the phrase south san potentially costly legal battle. the se settlement calls for both silicon valley companies to cross license their patents and expand an advertising partnership. yahoo! filed the patent lawsuit in march, alleging facebook infringed on 10 of its patents. facebook counter sued in april. the settlement doesn't involve any financial compensation. the city of stockton's bankruptcy proceedings are under way. lawyers for stockton's creditors packed the first hearing in federal court in sacramento today. the case continues next month. stockton is the largest city to file for chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in the u.s. during the boom, it spent a lot of money on city projects and generous pension and health benefits. then the housing crisis hit and the city could not make enough money to pay off its debts. oprah winfrey made a $10,000 donation to a stockton city council candidate's campaign. she is supporting michael tubbs. he is 21 years old, a stanford university graduate, and aspiring party lines 21-16, giving the plan just enough votes to pass. >> the high speed rail line will eventually link san francisco and los angeles. democratic governor jerry brown and the obama administration say the construction will create jobs and benefit the environment, but republicans say the state cannot afford to start such an ambitious project at a time of deep budget cuts. >> we did not have a vote to spare, but i'm happy to report that hope trumped fear. >> they are going to see that you cut education. they are going to see that you are hurting families, but they are also going to see that you found money for this monumental, this colossal, this project, spend money that we simply don't have. >> the bill authorizes the state to begin selling bonds to fund the construction of a 130-mile stretch of that rail line. the first segment of the line will run from madera to bakersfield. critics say starting the project in the central valley is a plan to quote, build a train to nowhere. supporters say they need to start construction soon and where it's easiest to guarantee federal funding. the bill also ear marked $1.9 million for other transit projects, including $600 million to electrify caltrain, $140 million for new bart cars, and $61 million for san francisco muni's central subway project. occupy protesters plan to march to the sacramento county sheriff's office to protest police brutality. protesters say citizens review board is needed to review claims of excessive force. that march is scheduled to begin at cesar chavez park in sacramento at noon. well, it will be two years tomorrow since a jury found messerly guilty of involuntary manslaughter. the former bart police officer spent a total of one year in jail for the fatal shooting of oscar grant. grant's family will hold a community service event at 2:00 this afternoon. organizers say the mothers of 10 people killed by police in the past three years will be in attendance. they include the family of a teenager gunned down by south san francisco police last month. at least one of the teenagers involved in a serious car crash in alameda has been released from the hospital. ktvu brought you this story yesterday morning. the victims include five 15-year-olds and one 13-year-old. police say the 15-year-old driver lost control and crashed into two trees at high speed around 1:30 in the morning. he suffered life-threatening injuries. police say the teens took the car without their parents' knowledge. the father of one of the kids said the beer in the trunk belonged to him. a memorial race will be held tomorrow for a jockey who died at the alameda county fair. horse racing resumed at the fair yesterday, after a moment of silence for juarez herrera. he was riding the number 8 horse thursday when he clipped another horse's heels. herrera fell over his horse's head onto the track and was trampled. >> he loved being there, loved competing against these california riders. he totally enjoyed it. he died doing what he loved to do. >> herrera was from mexico, but lived in southern california. this is the first time a tragedy like this has happened in 37 years at the track. the horse was not hurt. the california horse racing board is investigating the accident. well, there's new evidence against a san francisco couple charged with killing their daughter's alleged pimp. san francisco's district attorney says surveillance video and phone records show three of the four defendants in the case talking to each other before and after the deadly shooting last month. >> they were aware sneed was here in san francisco and we know they did not go to the san francisco police department for help. they instead elected to conspire and go out and kill this individual. >> 22-year-old calvin sneed was shot and killed in the city's bayview district. he was allegedly pimping the suspect's 17-year-old daughter. the four suspects are being held in lieu of $2 million bail. some legal experts are questioning if jurors ignored a law when they found a man not guilty of a crime, even though he admitted to beating a retired south bay priest. >> i don't think there is a legal basis for it. i mean, strictly speaking. this is what it looks like a case of jury nullification, which is not officially countenance, not officially allowed. [ cheers & applause ] >> jurors acquitted will lynch of felony assault and elder abuse, saying they felt sympathy for the man who says he was allegedly molested by father gerald lid inner. legal experts say justice in a jury system is often up to the jurors' interpretation, but the real concern is whether this verdict sends a message that people can go free, despite taking the law into their own hands. an east bay oil refinery faces another hazmat investigation. yesterday morning, 80 workers at the evergreen oil refinery in newark were evacuated. it happened when about 200 gallons of superheated oil leaked from a pipe. one worker was treated at the scene for breathing problems. no other injuries were reported. back in march, a 50-gallon paint drum at the same refinery exploded. last year, an even larger explosion injured one employee. evergreen oil has been fined by the state at least 10 times in the past two years for odor releases. only on 2, a livermore teenager is talking about her hawaiian vacation that started with a shark bite. on the first full day of her 10-day maui vacation, 16-year-old sage sinclair was sitting in about 2 feet of water at the beach. that is when she felt something with a lot of teeth bite her leg. >> i immediately guessed it was a shark, but no one saw it. so i just stopped by the feeling that it was a shark. >> experts say she was bitten by a 4 to 5-foot long reef shark. sinclair ran up to the beach, where her mother was and they called 911. she did get stitches, as you can see there, and will have a scar, but no permanent damage. she was bitten and after that, the beach was shut down. sinclair learned that people actually had seen the shark the day before, but no one reported it. you may not be able to get onto the internet sunday night if your computer is in effected with a common type of malware. the fbi is scheduled to take down temporary servers it put up during a click fraud sting. the fbi set up the temporary servers to give users time to fix their malware infected computers, but the servers will come down this sunday at 9:00 p.m. pacific time. >> they are going to be tens of thousands of people in the united states who are unaware and who are going to wake up monday morning and try to go online and find they are not getting anywhere. >> the fbi's website has a link to a site to let you know construction crews uncovered the century-old grave site back in may. there are about 1500 coffins there and about 100 of them will be removed to make room for the construction project. the county is trying to identify the remains and then locate surviving family members. unclaimed remains will be cremated. the episcopal church is expected to approve a rite that would bless the union of same-sex couples. the blessing would include the words "i do" and exchange of rings without mentioning the words husband, wife or marriage. episcopalians could become the first major denomination to endorse the president recorded his weekly address during a visit to ohio. mr. obama talked about the transportation bill he signed into law, a bill he says keeps thousands of construction workers on the job by continuing to fund highway improvement projects. the transportation bill also includes a provision preventing interest rates on many college loans from doubling. the death toll is rising in russia. at least 99 people are now dead after heavy rains triggered flash floods in the southern part of that country. many people were asleep when those flood waters hit and were forced to scramble to safety in trees and on roofs. about 5000 homes have flooded. people affected by a mall collapse in canada have filed a $30 million lawsuit. they are suing the owners and local government officials for injuries and deaths to the algo center mall in elliott lake, ontario. they say warnings of dangerous safety conditions were ignored and alleged the collapse could have been prevented with proper inspections. earlier this week, police began a criminal investigation. the collapse nearly two weeks ago killed two people. we are awaiting to hear if wikileaks founder julian assange is going to be extradited to sweden. today is the court-appointed deadline. assange is currently hiding out in -- two women accused assange of sexually assaulting them while he was in sweden two years ago. george zimmerman is out of jail in florida, but the former neighborhood watch volunteer is under several restrictions. zimmer man is facing second degree murder charges in the shooting death of teenager trayvon martin. he is now free on $1 million bail. his $150,000 bond was revoked last month, after a judge ruled zimmerman hid some of his assets. zimmerman is being electronically monitored and has a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. curfew. the ethics commission will meet in a little more than a week concerning mirkarimi. his attorneys want to challenge ed lee's testimony. former supervisor aaron peskin says lee did offer mirkarimi a job, all raising questions of perjury. >> if the evidence surfaces after we have sworn testimony to indicate the perjury has taken place, then we will certainly evaluate whether that will be appropriate to prosecute. >> the defense plans to call a current supervisor and the building department commissioner about what lee allegedly said about discussing the case with members of the board. more than 2000 best buy employees are out of a job this morning. the electronics retailer announced it is laying off 600 of its geek squad employees and 1800 other workers nationwide. the layoffs represent 1.5% of best buy's overall work force. best buy says the layoffs are part of a larger turnaround plan announced in march. volvo's reputation for safety just took a $1.5 million hit. that is how much the car company has agreed to pay for delaying action on seven recalls. the national highway traffic safety administration says volvo failed to report safety defects in a timely manner. those delays involved 32,000 vehicles in 2010 and this year. volvo says it will improve its review process. a massachusetts man just paid off his mortgage with pennies. when thomas daigle and his wife purchased their home 35 years ago, he made his mission to make their final mortgage payment in pennies, so he began collecting pennies. on snowy days, mealed it a point to roll those pennies. >> 63,000 pennies later, a little bit more than that, but 63,000 and change, we paid our mortgage off. >> daigle says each box of rolled pennies weighed about 210 pounds and it took the bank more than two days to count all those pennies. coincidentally, the couple's 35th anniversary fell on the same day they paid off their mortgage. the annual fill more jazz festival returns to san francisco today. the 28th annual celebration of music, food and art begins at 10:00 this morning. fill more street between jackson and eddie streets will be shut down. the jazz festival continues moving its way through san francisco. lorainne blanco is live in san francisco. looks like it's getting pretty busy around you, lorainne. >> reporter: very busy, now at the palace of fine arts, a gorgeous location for mile 8.4 of the walk. you can see walkers walking by right now, taking a snack and a drink out here. this is where you can find the man van, very interesting. it's a mobile mammography unit part of the avon center at ucsf. we'll tell you more about it in a second. first, let's check out the kickoff at fort mason today. more than 2000 people laced up their kicks and headed to the wharf from there, passing the ferry building, through chinatown, north beach, pacific heights, before coming here. this is the 10th annual avon walk for breast cancer in san francisco, a two-day event to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. the first leg of the 39.3-mile walk is about the distance of a marathon. the second half is a half marathon and right now, let's go ahead and take a look inside the mammo van. you can find a full scale mammography unit. i'm here live with fern ornstein, from san francisco general. she's going to tell us more about what goes on at the center and why you have this unit. >> well, we are part of a safety net program of hospitals that avon foundation funds. we're here today to thank the walkers and the avon foundation for their generous support of our safety net program at san francisco general, where we serve the underserved. we provide free and low cost mammograms, screening and diagnostic procedures at our avon center, and we have all our community partners here today to help us thank the walkers in avon. we are excited that we're able to be here to cheer on the walkers and they are in it to end it. >> reporter: this is amazing. this is the mobile mammography unit. >> it's a mobile mammography unit. we take the van out to the community so we are increasing the access that women have to get screening mammograms, for women who might not make it into the center. we go to their communities, set up the van, we have mammo days, have screening and bring food. we encourage them to take care of their health and to take care of their breast health especially. >> reporter: fern, thank you, and thank you for your work here. and we're going to walk over here and see the walkers out here. they are are still walking by right now. the walk ends this evening at town park. walkers will spend the night there and start their second leg early tomorrow morning. of course the awesome part, the most awesome most unusual calls they have ever responded to. an iguana trapped in a car. it happened friday afternoon when a worker at the miami aquarium was driving home and realized there was an iguana trapped inside his dashboard. the worker pulled over and called 911. >> as soon as he pulled out, he realized he had a 3 1/2 or 4-foot iguana. >> it took about 45 minutes for firefighters to rescue the iguana. they are not sure how it ended up in the man's dashboard. that would scare me. >> i would be glad they got that thing out! >> i would pull over, too! time now, 9:56. let's go over to rosemary, looking at a warm forecast for us. >> nothing scary, nothing scary like what we just saw. so we've got clouds out along the coastline this morning. mostly sunny skies expected for most of us most of the day, even backing off the coast by noon time. temperatures in the 50s around the bay and coastline, near 70 degrees for some of our warmer spots. how about the lunch hour? low 60s at the coast, 70s around the bay. and low 80s for some of our hotter spots. then into the afternoon, if we want to talk hot, some of us will reach the low 90s, which is hot enough, right? 86 expected for santa rosa today. 90 for concord, 80 for fremont. low 80s redwood city, as well as mountain view. extended forecast there, the summer-like heat will continue for your sunday, although we may be slightly cooler. you may not notice much at all. monday into tuesday, rebounding and eventually by tuesday, looks like mid to upper 90s in the forecast there. 60s along the coast. typical summer-like pattern. the micro climates, you go 30 miles one way or the other and you have a huge difference in numbers. overall, it's a pretty good-looking forecast. >> that's why we live here. if you don't like it, drive a
