the winds will be very strong mainly during the morning when gusts upwards of 50 miles per hour are possible in the high wind warned areas (40+ mph for the wind advised)! these should diminish by this afternoon with temperatures still expected to top out in the 50s and 60s across most of the region with lots of sunshine. it'll be a bit cooler, but much calmer too tonighh and saturday with lows near 30 and highs in the middle 50s with decent sunshine. another weak cold front will move through on sunday which will increase our winds from the northwest and bring in some cooler air. still though, highs in the 40s is still not bad at all for late february, and that's where we'll be for the better part of next week. see graphics. wx timer @ :40 >> suspececelias wanatee went before a judge thursday for the first time since his arrest in sioux city's first murder of the year. the 47-year-old was arrested on a charge of second degree murder in the stabbing death of 50-year-old vernon mace. court documents says wanatee left a home at 1900 west first street where he and mace were both present. the affidavit says mace left shortly after wanatee. a woman, who said she heard the men arguing outside, called 9-1-1. back to the home saying wanatee had stabbed him, according to the affidavit. mace, who was stabbed six times, died later at the hospital. wanatee hahaan extensive criminal record. ktiv's tiffanan lane gives us the details of wanatee's previous murder conviction. wanatee was also given credit for time he served in prison prior to his conviction. that also reduced while serving his sentence, wanatee was placed on work release, and parole, and violated both. the fbi searched a california home connected to a relative of shooters. the home-- tied totohe brother farook -- has been searched before... but thursday federal agents were seen carrying out a box of things and a computer. they also searched the two cars parked out front.. officials would not discuss the nature of the search critical condition after a helicopter made a crash landing thursday in the waters of pearl harbor, hawaii. good samaritans who saw the crash jumped in the water to rescue the five people on board. first responders rushed to the scene and transported the pilot and four passengers to hospitals. no word yet on what caused the crash landing. the navy said the helicopter is owned by genesis aviation-- a company that gives the federal aviation administration is expected to investigate. 36-year-old jeremy werneburg was arrested f f attempted murder in sac county, iowa on wednesday. the sac county sheriff's department says they turned to facebook to find werneburg. ktivgv tommie clark shows us how social media is helping them do their job. a recent case involving a man wanted for attempted murder in sac county, iowa, has put social media in the the sac county sheriff's office's facebook page drew in thousands of people after posting a photo and information capture. sac county sheriff ken mcclure their community...and it's working. "the best use of it today is an example of looking for jeremy werneberg. you know when you get over 125,000 people viewing that and people talk and they share it you know virtually everybody knew who he was," said sac county sheriff ken mcclure. besides the post about werneberg, mcclure says their facebook page regularly posts information that is important for the public to know. that includes news releases, weather and information from other law enforcement agencies. but there are drawbacks to social media use if the "victims of crimes, family members, have found out because somebody sac county sheriff ken mcclure. "mcclure says social media does more then just give people information." "i think this is a way to show people that you know we're humans, we have families, we have kids, we live in your communities, we're part of your commumuty and all we want to do is make it a better place," said sac county sheriff ken mcclure. and community member agree... "we were going to take kylie hayworth, we were going to take her and her mother and sister on a battling brain cancer. doctors gave her six months to live. "i created a bucket list because i thought i was going to die," says kylie. "i wanted to try it." nats-balloon set up "we had the balloon set up and they carried her over to the balloon and put her in, we had a chair in there for her to sit," says paula. nats- bye, check it off your bucket list for the first leg of the flight, kim flew kylie and her mom above le mars, from the airport to the golf course. way up in the sky, the three death. we were just like, "yeah, if something would happen to the balloon and weweent down, it would be a good day to die," says kylie. when they touched down, kylie's mother got out, her sister got in and they took off again. nats-camera sound that's the moment this photograph captures. it was a ride to remember. "very cool," says kylie.@"it was a once in a lifetime experience." "it was a good day," says paula. "as you can see smiles all around. it was a good day." little did anyone know that this perfect day was about to turn tragic. "he said he didn't feel right and i said, 'okay. do you want me to stay home?' he said, 'no, go aheaeaand go bowling,'" says paula. when paula g to the bowling alley, something didn't feel right. "i was a little hesitant about called me shortly after and said he had called 911," says paula. she got home just as they put kikiin the ambulence. (nats-door closing) "i said, 'how are you doing?' and he said, 'i feel a lot better now' and i said, 'okay,' and i met them at the hospital, but i never got to see him again," says paula. (nats-siren) doctors worked to revive kim for two hours, but it was too late. "his heart completely blew apart," says paula. "i was like it can't be true. i just saw him," says kylie. kim died about two hours after this photo was taken. "really?" asks david moore. turns out, the phototoapher, david moore, had no idea the significance of the flight when he captured the colorful balloon in the distance of the dull landscape. "i've never seen a colorful, hot air balloon any time in january in the middle of winter so i made what it was up to," says david. he snapped several that day. capturing kim's last moments without knowininit. "i don't know what to say,y,ou hope as a photographer thatatour imimes have some kind of an impact on somebody, but you never know," says david. "it's a good memory for us it's hard to be sad when you see something like that and know how much it meant to so many people," says paula. nats-music? ("couuesy of cnn") pleasee courtesy, per is not burned in 1:16-1:18) "we all need to slow down a little bit." as the democrats and republicans go after their next election prize.. tomorrow. clinton and trump are still leading nationally in the polls, but clinton's lead has been cut in half in just the last month. i'm tracie potts in washington - back to you. >> cubans are welcoming the news that president obama will visit there next month. the historic trip will mark a turning point in u-s reretions with a long-time cold wawafoe. washington and havana restored diplomatic ties in july. but commerce remains limited by the decades-old u-s trade embargo, which includes a ban on american tourism to the island. justice antonin scalia's body will lie in repose today in the great hall of the supreme court building. a privatatceremony will be helel before the publbl is invited to pay their respects. this honor was last given to chief justice william rehnquist in 2005. as part of supreme court tradition, a black drape is also hung over the courtroom doors, scalia's chair on the bench, and the bench itself. the funeral is expected to be held on saturday. decision by the u-s to impose further sanctions on north korea. the south korean foreign ministry spokesman said today that the sanctions will contribute to "make north korea pay" for "its nuclear and missile provocations" . on thursday president obama slapped north korea with more stringent sanctions for defying the e rld and pushing forward with its nucleaea weapons program. the move came weeks after north korea launched a satellite- carrying rocket into space and conducted its fourth underground nuclear test. those against a bill prohibiting transgender students from using the bathroom of their choice are taking aim at south dakota's 4-billion dollars tourism industry. uld-be travelers havav threatened to cancel trips to the state if governor dennis daugaard doesn't veto the bill. it requires transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond to their sex at birth. advocates say the bill is meant to protect the privacy of students, but opponents of the bill say it's discriminator y. the effort to pressure daugaard by losses mirrors similar efforts in indiana and arizona. thursday, michigan's governor announced a new multi-million dollar grant heading to flint. governor rick snyder says two-million dollars will be approved for the flint mayor's "fast start" plan to begin removing pipes. on wednesday, governor snyder had a cautious approach... saying the pipe removal needed to be "mapped out" before it began. but governor snyder says this new grant is a "positive step" for the local, state, and federal agencies to work together on a solution. students at the university of south dakota provided some pedal power for a good cause on thursday. usd's pi kappa alpha fraternity held the 6th annual taylor trudeau cycle for life, yesterday afternoon. the day of cycling raises funds and awareness for blood cancers. the event was started after the fraternity lost one of its brothers, taylor trudeau, after a year- long battle with leukemia in 2008. members of the fraternity hope to honor him, while supporting others fighting the nothing when someone out there is suffering for the rest of their life, so doing paying money to help them out.. you wouldn't do it," said more than 130 pi kappa alpha chapters across the country take part in "cycle for life". the sioux city art center will tomorrow. oregon native, nathan sawaya's "the art of the brick," opens this weekend. he sculpts all his pieces exclusively with lego bricks. the exhibit will be held at the sioux city art center through may 8th. some of sawaya's lifesize adult sculptures are made with over 15,000 bricks, and can take nearly a month to complete. one art center official said that siouxlanders will get a glimpse at some very unique art pieces. in hollywood, i'm david daniel. >> still to come in our third half hour.... a picture that captured a special moment has even more meaning today. how it connected three families in an unusual way. the mats were busy for 12 straight hours in des moines and omaha. we'll have highlights and interviews from some of the good morning and thanks for joining us on this friday, february 19th. i'm al joens. sarah is off today. coming up in this half hour.... the sioux city man responsible for the city's first murder of 2016 made his first appearance before a judgethursda y. but it's not the first time elias wanatee has been in court. he previously spent 20 years in prison for killing a man outside a sioux city bar in 1990. we'll break down that case, and explain why he's not still behind bars on that 50-year prison sentence. and a picture worth a thousand words. we'll meet three families connected by one photo featured in our 2016 around siouxland calendar. and later.... a girl suffering from a terminal illness can check one item off her bucket list. biggest dreams come true. but first, here's ben. > suspect elias wanatee went suspect elias wanatee went before a judge thursday for the sioux city's first murder of the years. the 47-year-old was arrested on a charge of second degree murder in the stabbing death of 50-year-old vernon mace. court documents says wanatee left a home at 1900 west first street where he and mace were both present. the affidavit says mace left shortly after wanatee. a woman, who said she heard the 9-1-1. a short time later, mace went back to the home saying wanatee had stabbed him, the affidavit. mace, who was stabbed six times, died later at the hospital. wanatee has an extensive criminal record. ktiv's tiffany lane gives us the details of wanatee's previous murder conviction. during the trial. on august 31, 2001, the first-degree murder charge was changed to second-degree murder. with the new conviction, wanatee's sentence was changed... from life without parole, to a sentence not to exceed 50 years. because the murder happened before 1996, iowa law says for every day wanatee spent in prison, he would get one-point-two days taken off his sentence. that led to his release on january 10, 2015. in october 2015, wanatee had another run-in with the law. he was accused of pulling out a machete-type knife during a disturbance at the super wal-mart on floyd boulevard. wanatee was charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon. he still hasn't been sentenced in that case. >> wanatee was also given credit for time he served in prison prior to his conviction. that also reduced ththtime he spent behind bars. while s sving his work release, and parole, and violated both. the fbi searched a california home connected to a relative of one of the san bernardino shooters. the home-- tied to the brother of shooter syed farook -- has been searched before... but thursday federal agents were seen carrying out a box of things and a computer. they also searched the two cars parked out front.. officials would not discuss the nature of the search a sixteen-year-old boy is in critical condition after a helicopter made a crash landing thursday in the waters of pearl harbor, hawaii. good samaritans who saw the crash jumped in the water to rescue the five people on board. first responders rushed to the scene and transported the pilot and four passengers to hospitals. no word yet on what caused the crash landing. the navy said the helicopter is owned by genesis aviation-- a company that gives helicopter tours of oahu. the federal aviation ininstigate. the so-called affluenza teen will appear in court this morning to learn whether his case will be moved to adult court. couch was 16-years-old when he drove drunk and caused a crash that killed four people in dallas. couch pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation after his defense attorneys said his wealthy upbringing impaired his ability to tell right from wrong. if a judge decides to move the case to adult court and he violates probation, couch could be sent to prison. families of some of couch's victims are expected to attend the hearing. 36-year-old jeremy werneburg was arrested for attempted murder in sac county, iowa on wednesday. the sasacounty sheriff's department sayshey turned to facebook to find werneburg. ktiv's tommie clark shows us how social media is helping them do their job. wanted for attempted murder in sac county, iowa, has put social media i ithe spotlight. the sac county sheriff's office's facebook page drew in thousands of people after posting a photo and information about jeremy werneberg's capture. sac county sheriff ken mcclure says it's a way to reach out to their community...and it's working. "the best use of it today is an example of looking for jeremy werneberg. you know when you get ver 125,000 people viewing that and people talk and theheshare it you know virtually everybody knew who he was," said sac county sheriff ken mcclure. besides the post about werneberg, mcclure says their facebook page regularly posts information that is important for the public to know. that includes news releases, weather and information from other law enforcement agencies. but there are drawbacks to sosoal media use if the wrong person posts something... "victims of crimes, family members, have found out because somebody posted it on social media," said sac county sheriff ken mcclure. "mcclure says social media does information." "i think this is a way to show people that you know we're humans, we have families, we have kids, we live in your communities, we're part of your community and all we want to do is make it a better place," said sac county sheriff ken mcclure. and community member agree... "we had the balloon set up and they carried her over to the balloon and put her in, we had a chair in there for her to sit," says paula. nats- bye, check it off your bucket list for the first leg of the flight, kim flew kylie and her mom above le mars, from the airport to the golf course. way up in the sky, the three talked about life... and death. "it was so peaceful up there and we were just like, "yeah, if something would happen to the balloon and we went down, it would be a good day to die," says kylie. when they touched down, kylie's mother got out, her sister got in and they took off again. nats-camera sound that's the moment this photograph captures. it was a ride to remember. "very cool," says kylie. "it was a once in a lifetime experience." "it was a good day," says paula. "as you can see smiles all around. it was a good day." little did anyone know that this perfect day was about to turn tragic. "he said he didn't feel right and i said, 'okay. do you want me to stay home?' he said, 'no, go ahead and go bowling,'" says paula. when paula got to the bowling alley, something didn't feel right. "i was a little hesitant about putting on my shoes and he called me shortly after and said he had called 911," says paula. she got home just as they put kim in the ambulence. (nats-door closing) "i said, 'how are you doing?' and he said, 'i feel a lot better now' and i said, 'okay,' and i met them at the hospital, but i never got to see (nats-siren) doctors worked to revive kim for two hours, but it was too late. "his heart completely blew apart," says paula. "i was like it can't be true. i just saw him," says kylie. kim died about two hours after this photo was taken. "really?" asks david moore. turns out, the photographer, david moore, had no idea the significance of the flight when he captured the colorful balloon in the distance of the dull landscape. "i've never seen a colorful, hot air balloon any time in january in the middle of winter so i made it a point to follow it and see what it was up to," says he snapped several that day. capturing kim's last moments without knowing itit "i don know what to say, you hope as a photographer that your images have some kind of an impact on somebody, but you never know," says david. "it's a good memory for us it's hard to be sad when you see something like that and know how much it meant to so many people," says paula. nats-music? "biking for 30 minutes is nothing when someone out there is suffering for the rest of their fe, so doing something for 3 3minutes and paying money to he them out.. i don't see why you wouldn't do it," said richard culver. more than 130 pi kappa alpha chapters across the cotry take part in "cycle for life". the sioux city art center will be opening a new exhibit tomorrow. oregon native, nathan sawaya's "the art of the brick," opens this weekend. he sculpts all his pieces exclusively with lego o bricks. the exhibit will be held at the sioux city art center througmay 8th. some of sawaya's lifesize adult sculptures bricks, and can take nearly a month to complete. one art center official said that siouxlanders will get a glimpse at some very unique art pieces.
