this morning." as you wake up in the west, trouble in chicago snarling air traffic from los angeles to seattle to new york. o'hare, midway airports, two major hubs, stopped all planes going in and out this morning. you can see almost no flight activity over the chicago area right now. >> this all happened because of a fire at an important air traffic control center in aurora, illinois, outside chicago. our chicago station wbbm is at o'hare airport where thousands of passengers are stuck. susanna, good morning. >> reporter: you can imagine, there are a lot of frustrated passengers here at o'hare, people waiting around. on the phone. trying to rebook their flights. that counter, the american airlines counter, is completely full. a long line of people waiting to rebook their flight. if you look at the flight board, there are a lot of red. specifically san diego, san francisco and los angeles flights are canceled, at least here at o'hare airport on american airlines. there have been at least 102 flights out of chicago on aa canceled this morning. we're told they will remain canceled until further notice. now, ground stoppage is all because of an faa tower out of aurora, illinois. there was a fire there this morning. there's been a ripple effect because that tower controls flights in and out of both chicago airports. midway and o'hare. and until further notice, until the faa gives the clear and lifts that ground stoppage, people here will have to wait around. charlie. >> thanks. derek jeter's final game at yankee stadium featured a thrilling and most fitting finale. he shortstop but he will go with the yankees to their final three games in boston at fenway park. he says he's going to play, but he's just going to hit, not field. he's going to be the yankees' of a statement from iraq's new prime minister. now, at one of new york's busiest station stations. >> police presence heavy throughout the city. officials have been quick to remind passengers this is precautionary and they're at no greater risk. >> with the evening rush hour about to begin, i have a simple message for all new yorkers. there is no immediate credible threat to our subway system. >> reporter: despite the mayor's reassurance, security was at high alert at new york city subway stations thursday afternoon. bomb-sniffing dogs and officers armed with automatic weapons patrolled city trains and platforms, keeping watch for anything out of the ordinary. comments made by iraq's prime minister, haider al abadi, while attending the u.n. general assembly in new york sparked the threat. abadi said captured isis militants told iraqi intelligence agents about a plan to launch a terrorist attack on subways in the united states and paris. shortly after the prime minister's remarks, some of new york's top officials, including mayor de blasio and governor cuomo took to the rails to reassure commuters. >> there is no specific credible information about any specific threat to the new york city subway system. >> police presence in parts of new york and new jersey had already been stepped up because of the u.n. general assembly and the general threat posed by isis. in a statement to cbs news, the nypd said new york city normally operates at a heightened level of security and we adjust that posture daily based on our evaluation of information as we receive it. new york wasn't the only city to respond to prime minister abadi's comments. transit officials in washington, d.c., boston and los angeles all went on record, reminding passengers there they are at no greater risk. american warplanes attacked isis again overnight in syria and iraq. air strikes hit targets in eastern syria and near the iraqi city of kirkuk. new video showed the first attack on oil facilities that produce much of the terror group's income. in london this moing, prime minister david cameron called for britain to join the air war's part of a wider involvement. >> where we should be helping is with the aid, with the diplomacy, with the political pressure and with our unique military assets where they can help. >> american intelligence is learning more about the key members of isis. bob orr's in washington with new information on one of its notorious figures. bob, good morning. >> for the first time on thursday, the director of the fbi said investigators now have a name for the masked isis fighter who may have beheaded two american journalists and a british aid worker. fbi chief james comey said, quote, i believe we have identified him. he went on to say, i'm not going to tell you who i believe it is. the man's appeared in three grim beheading videos standing behind james foley, steven sotloff and david haines. comey warned isis would strike the u.s. homeland if it could, but he says he worried more about the al qaeda-linked group the khorasan group. khorasan made up of al qaeda veterans has recruited operatives. we know they've experimented with undee dtectable bombs. khorasan was working towards an attack. officials didn't know how close khorasan actually was to launching an operation. in comey's words, he said, it's the kind of threat you have to operate under the assumption that it's tomorrow. the u.s. has identified about 12 americans who were still in syria, fighting with various terror organizations. more americans, in fact, have already come home from syria. those people are under varying degrees of investigation and surveillance. norah. >> okay, bob, thank you. the suspect in the case of the missing university of virginia student could return to the state as soon as today. still, authorities may not be any closer to finding hannah graham. wyatt andrews is in charlottesville, virginia, where the 18-year-old vanish inned nearly two weeks ago. >> the police here admit they are just about out of leads in the search for 18-year-old hannah graham. their main suspect in this case, jesse matthew, will soon come back to virginia, but investigators say they still need more information about the night miss graham went missing. law enforcement officials in virginia await matthews return from texas where he was arrested wednesday. they hope to question matthew but have also asked the public for more help. >> there is a large significant block of time between the time that we know hannah graham disappeared and the time that disappearance was reported to us. we need to shrink that gap. >> reporter: for now, police say they remain unable to talk to their suspect. >> he invoked his right to remain silent and his right to counsel. we cannot reapproach him until such time as he chooses otherwise. >> reporter: cbs news confirmed 12 years ago when matthew was a student at liberty university in lynchburg, virginia, he was investigated on a complaint of rape. william was matthew's teammate on the football team. >> there were a few rumors that the sex was aggressive. several different rumors that were not verified. >> reporter: no criminal charges were filed but he says matthews was dismissed from liberty which, as a christian university, has a strict code of conduct. >> he broke a rule at liberty university, which was engaging in sex. >> reporter: when hannah graham disappeared on september 13th, she became the fifth young woman missing from charlottesville over the last five years. all five vanished within a few miles of route 29, the main highway that runs through the city. a law enforcement source tells cbs news that the fbi and local police will try to determine if the evidence in this case connects matthew to any of the others. so far, we have been unable to talk to matthew's attorney for comment, but his friends, his family, his co-workers, uniformly describe him as friendly and outspoken and express shock he's been charged with any crime. one of president obama's most controversial cabinet members is leaving. attorney general eric holder will step down when a replacement is confirmed. he took office at the start of the obama administration. holder is the only african-american ever to lead the justice department. major garrett is at the white house with some of the president's options. major, good morning. >> good morning. the white house says it will name holder's replacement for a week, maybe two. the short list includes his deputy attorney general, the current solicitor general and a former white house counsel, all scream continuity and familiarity. meanwhile, holder's legacy remains mixed. holder is one of president obama's closest friends. a powerful voice in the cabinet who often said what the president would not on matters of race. >> in things racial, we have always been and we, i believe, continue to be in too many ways essentially a nation of cowards. >> reporter: president obama called holder the people's attorney. >> that comes with a big portfolio from counterterrorism to civil rights, public corruption to white collar crime. >> reporter: holder will go down in history for refusing to defend the clinton era defense of marriage act and expanding civil liberties for gay and transgender americans. holder made history of a different kind as well. >> the resolution's agreed to. >> reporter: becoming the only attorney general held in contempt by the house of representatives. republicans accused holder of withholding documents related to operation fast and furious. a federal gun tracing effort implicated in the death of border patrol agent brian terry. congressman darrell issa, who chairs the house oversight committee, frequently clashed with holder. >> i'm not going to stop talking now -- >> would you conduct yourself as a member of congress? it's unacceptable and it's shameful. >> reporter: a point man in the war on terror, holding authorized the expansion of government surveillance, phone and internet traffic and, in the case of the associated press, sought phone records of reporters. >> when we look at some of the invasions of privacy, that doesn't seem consistent with his general commitment to constitutional values, especially equality under the law. >> reporter: top contenders to replace holder include his deputy, james cole, the former white house counselor catherine remmler. the u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york. and jenny dirkan, who just stepped down from that post in the western district of washington state. charlie. >> major, thanks. we're learning more about the police shooting of an unarmed man in south carolina. it happened during a traffic stop this month. a state trooper's charged with assault. prosecutors say he acted recklessly. now, a look at what the wounded man's attorney is saying. >> reporter: trooper groubert approaches jones at a gas station for allegedly not wearing his seat belt. seconds after asking him for his driver's license, groubert opened fire. the dash cam video shows the trooper's vehicle approaches jones' suv at a shell station on september 4. >> can i have your license please? get out of the car. >> reporter: jones was shot in the hip. the 35-year-old was returning home from work and was unarmed. >> get on the ground. >> i was just getting my license. you said get my license. i was getting my license. right there. that's my license. right there. >> put your hands behind your back. put your hands behind your back. >> what did i do, sir? >> are you hit? >> i think so. i can't feel my leg. i don't know what happened. i just grabbed my license. why did you, why did you shoot me? >> i think the video speaks for itself. the trooper overreacted. >> reporter: this is la var jones lawyer. >> mr. jones was only trying to comply. he was trying to do what was right. he tried to explain that several times after the trooper told him why he had shot him. >> reporter: the south carolina department of public safety immediately opened an investigation into the shooting and last friday fired the 31-year-old trooper. in a statement, the department said groubert's actions quote, rose to such an extent that his employment with us must be terminated and that protocol was not followed in this case. records indicate he joined the force in 2005, but left in 2009 to work for the richland county sheriff's office. that year, groubert was involved in a police pursuit following a traffic stop near a bank. the suspect opened fire on police. groubert wounded the suspect and was awarded the medal of valor. groubert was released on $75,000 bond. if convicted, he faces 20 years in state prison. lavaa jones is recovering from his injuries at home and is expected to make a full recovery. more troubling allegations against the nfl. a law enforcement official claims he sent the video of ray rice punching his bride to be to nfl security chief jeffrey mi miller in april, according to the soeshlassociated press. miller responded thursday in a statement saying, quote, i unequivocally deny that i received at any time a copy of the video, and i had not watched it until it was made public on september 8th. in alaska, no major damage or injuries after an 6.2 earthquake thursday northwest of anchorage. it was "the fresno bee" says foster farms is recalling near ly 40,000 pounds of chicken. the recall includes 3.5 pounds of grilled strips. they have a best buy date of august 15th, 2015. so far, no one's been reported sick. >> and cnet says apple offered a software update last night, after a glitch kept some from making calls. that glitch and problems with bending sent apple stock tumbling nearly 4% on sunday but apple said only nine customers reported bent phones. "the wall street journal" says businesses that bring wealthy chinese gam betters to macau face growing pressure. government corruption and money laundering crackdwns are hurting business. and "the new york times" says the outbreak of child respiratory illnesses are growing. 38 states are now affected. there are 226 confirm cases of enterovirus 268 but it's likely many more have been infected. a cbs news review looks at campus police across the country. they've received millions of dollars worth of military weapons and gear from the pentagon, but now there are calls to halt those transfers. some say the equipment is necessary. manuel bojorquez is at the university of texas at arlington with the debate. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. good morning to our viewers in the west. police protect more than a dozen campuses and 330,000 people across the state. the director of police says those additional weapons and gear are essential, given the type of emergencies that can happen. when university of texas police responded to a bomb threat in 2012, they arrived in this humvee. it's one of three large military vehicles the university's police system has acquired from the department of defense. they recently received this mine resistant vehicle, which was designed to withstand roadside bombs on the battlefields of iraq and afghanistan. >> the turret has been removed. there's no weapons associated with it. >> reporter: michael heidingsfield is the director of police for the university of texas which includes 15 across the state. what possible use could the university of texas have for a mine resistant vehicle? >> its purpose is to protect the occupants, save lives, and reduce death. that vehicle will be used solely in response to active shooter or armed intruder events or perhaps in anticipation of a major natural catastrophic event. >> reporter: the university's police department is one of 125 school law enforcement agencies in 25 states that have received military gear free of charge from the department of defense. that includes police departments for 23 k through 12 school districts and 102 colleges and universities. the dod program came under scrutiny in august when police responded to protests in ferguson, missouri, with tanks, combat gear and assault rifles, some of which had come from the pentagon. a cbs news review of available public data from more than 30 states found that law enforcement agencies affiliated with educational institutionings have obtained more than $13 million worth of military gear from the program. among the items received, 145 pistols, 780 rifles and 9 of the mine resistant vehicles. >> the presence of military weaponry on schools undermines public trust and it undermines public safety and it's not the right response. >> reporter: the aclu is one of more than 20 education and civil rights advocates calling on the defense department to stop giving military equipment to school police. >> post-ferguson, it's brought conversations we never had before. >> reporter: rueben littlejohn the chief of police for the san diego school district, preschool to high school. it received this in april and had plans to repaint it white and use it as a rescue vehicle in the event of an active shooter or natural disaster. but last week they changed course. >> we're returning it because some members of the community have expressed the fact they're uncomfortable with a vehicle that's military by design. >> reporter: but many agencies says the threat to their institutions is evolving and point to mass shootings like columbine, virginia tech, and sandy hook. as reasons their response must evolve too. >> i'm required to protect the university of texas. i ought to employ and have in my repertoire every possible tool. i hope that vehicle never has to leave the warehouse it sits in, but if i don't have it and then we need it, i've not made the right decision. >> reporter: that armored truck is not kept at this or any other campus for that matter. uc arlington police department has only received items such as first aid kits and goggles from the pentagon. still, several lawmakers want a review of the program for all schools and 2 congress men have drafted a bill looking to limit those weapon transfers. >> all right, to be continued, thank you. and alibaba made wall street history one week ago with the largest initial public offering in history. since then, the market has flattened out. alibaba's founder jack ma has a network now of nearly $26 billion. sunday on "60 minutes," lara logan sits down with ma to find out how he built the worrell's world's largest e-commerce companies. >> reporter: with just over $50,000 in seed money, alibaba was born. today it's valued at more than $231 billion and is headquartered on a sprawling state-of-the-art campus that rivals any in silicon valley. ma's personal fortune makes him the richest man in china and one of the most influential. it's impossible to run a business on alibaba's scale without official blessing. >> you were quoting saying when you have millions of small companies using your site and billions of dollars transacting every day, the government cares. >> yep. >> what do they care? >> they care that i can stabilize the country. i told the government if people have no jobs, the government will be in trouble. my job is to have more people have jobs. usually when people succeed in china, they either have connections, political connections, or they come from a wealthy family. you had neither. >> no. >> and you've done this without interference from the government? >> well, i never got one cent from the government. i never got one cent from the china banks. i'm very independent. >> that was true when alibaba began and most of its capital still comes from abroad, but more recently some of its smaller investors have included institutions with ties to china's ruling elite. alibaba has also benefited from chinese government policies that make it difficult for foreign competitors to operate there. ma explained how he walks a fine line with beijing. >> i have very strict talks to my team. never, ever do business with government. love them. don't marry them. we never do projects for government. if they come to us, i can't help you, good, i will introduce you to friends who are interested in doing that or if you want me to do it, i do it free for you. next time don't come to me again. because of that we keep a very good love relationship with the government. >> and how did jack ma build alibaba into the world's largest e-commerce company dwarfing amazon and ebay combined? "48 hours" correspondent susan spencer has a story of a couple who couldn't buy happiness. good morning. >> good morning, gayle. he and his wife ann decided to turn their backs on wall street, leave the country, and use their millions to create an exotic new life. they expected an idyllic existence at one with nature. t. for ann and john bender, the jungle was paradise. >> that? that's the house. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: and this was home. 4,000 square feet, no windows and doors at all. lit with hundreds of stain glassed lamps. the house was the centerpiece of the wildlife refuge they sets up in 2000 which the fortune bender made on wall street. >> he was brilliant, phenomenally handsome. it was love at first sight for both of us. >> reporter: a math and science whiz, john bender had a knack for making money. >> by the time he was 25, i think he had amassed about $80 million. >> the couple amassed millions but also a problem. depression. although they poured money into their home and refuge for more than a decade, a friend said the peace and happiness they sought was not to be. >> john and ann had problems that money just couldn't fix. >> depression was an immense bond between them. it's a very isolating disease and people tend to retreat from it, pull away from society. >> over time they with drew, bought guns, hired guards, and lived in near total isolation. >> i think both of them had lost touch with reality. >> in messages ann said were written shortly before he died, john talks of killing himself and just after midnight on january 8th, 2010, ann describes waking up to see her husband pointing a gun at his head. >> i tried to grab the gun. >> were you able to get it? >> no. i was able to get my hands around his and the gun slipped and it went off. >> as to who was holding it -- >> i don't think anyone was holding it. >> how does a gun go off when no one's holding it? >> i think that it fell. i never touched the gun. >> investigators had their doubts. >> why does somebody who's suicidal shoot himself back here? they said first of all john was left-handed. how does a left-handed person lying in bed shoot himself here? >> he doesn't, the costa rica authorities decide and charged ann with murder. >> i did not kill john. >> some interesting points, susan, especially when we heard that he had threatened to commit suicide but the point is raised how does a left-handed person do that. >> how indeed. >> how important are the forensics in this case? >> it's very vital. a real csi sort of case. so much so we hired experts to go over the ef. we took them back to costa rica in the very room, laid it out, analyzed it, and gave us some of their opinions. >> we want to know what their opinions with were. >> you guys are incorrigible. suffice it to say the prosecution's version of events is not exactly what they thought happened. >> where's the case now?
