them would have to be here. and so we re grateful that they are. and our entire nation expresses its profound gratitude. more important, we re so grateful that they were there. some on duty, others off duty. all rising above and beyond the call of duty. all saving the lives of people they didn t know. that distinction that these 13 officers of valor saved the lives of strangers is the first of several qualities they share. but their bravery, if it had not been for their bravery, we likely would have lost a lot of people, mothers, brothers, sons, daughters, friends, and loved ones. thankfully they are still with their families today because these officers were where they needed to be most at a critical time. at a gas station during a routine patrol. in the middle of a busy hospital, in a grocery store, on the campus of a community college. near an elementary school where a sheriff s deputy s children and his wife taught. in each of these moments these officers were true ....

from his house, a wooden outline marks the spot where harris was found. ricky harris took us there. harris: police told us to mark the area, so we did. off camera harris grandson said his grandfather died in a spot that he loved: the farm where he had spent so much of his life. he grew up in evergreen, the son of a sharecropper. when his father died, he took up the farming himself as a way to support the remaining family. juanita milstead/sister: he stayed there and worked the farm so my mother would have a place to live until the siblings were all grown. evergreen is where he spent the rest of his life. when he wasn t on the farm, he was serving at a nearby church that s damaged but still standing following the tornado. milstead: he was a good christian man. that was the main thing. he loved his lord. and he loved evergreen, a community that mourns him with a makeshift cross in the spot where his home once stood. milstead: this was home and no other place would ....
roanoke county police are still piecing together what happened after confirming that a man was shot by an officer. at 7:15 last night, they received a call that a man wearing a bandanna and hoodie was waving a gun off of route 419. we spoke with a witness who made the call to police. he says he was driving when he saw the man. thomas gill, witness i saw his gun in the right hand. so he was waving it at cars and he turned around and he was waving it at me so i turned around and took a left and i called 911. amy whittaker, roanoke county spokesperson officers then arrived on scene and they confronted the suspect which is just up the road from walgreens parking officer involved shooting that took place. the suspect was transported to the hospital. we do not know the person s condition right now. that witness tells us he heard at least five shots but it s not clear who fired all of them. danville police are investigating a robbery that happened last night in the 100 blo ....
