for a man who shot 10 people inside a moving subway car in brooklyn now reportedly. beforet opening fire .ta the attacker also methodically unpacks and wore a gas mask. then he tossed canisters that smoke into the compartment. well, you can imagineo panicked passengersyo rushed out attr the next stop, blood streaking the platformea in the end, a total of twenty nine were injured. thankfully, all woundsinju thane non-life threatening. a nine millimeter was recovered at the scene along w with a hatchet, gasoline, fireworks and hoby fuze. hours ago now just a few hours ago, the nypd announced a person of interest, 62 year old frank jamesd . mr. james i >> mr. jamess is just a person of interest we know rightht, who rented that u-haul van in philadelphia. hat u-haul the keys to that u-haul then were found in the subway in our shooter's possessions. >> well, we're learning more about mr. james and we're going to get to that and a little bit. but here's the fact. if in fact he is the shooter, you might be wondering how did a five foot five portly 60 year old getaway escape police forsc the time being from the biggest ,most advanced police force in the world? well, in part itnvolved involveu well and also a malfunction with the camera system at that particular station. radioiostation, a local sureon, adding we're not if it was a video feed problem or what , but that was the most embarrassing moment for mayor adams today with a suspect still not in custody, the man who campaigned on the importance of tacklingri violent crime, he still choseme to politicize the tragedy. i neverr bought the claim that he was going to bee this fresh start for new york , a tough on crime democrat.s h and today as he triede t to shim focus away from a hurting new york , we saw who he really is, just another gun control fanatic who is now in new york city from disgraced these guns,s these relentless shooters are in american schools in columbine, sandy hook in virginia to musicic festivals in those days, to nightclubs in orlando, to movie theaters, yoga classes across the nation. these killers have used weapons of mass destruction to massacre innocent. we can never stop the killing, but we cannot stop the guns. you're right.hinking he j if you're thinking he just gaves a political speech, he just gave a political speech.po exaci so how exactly iss he different from de blasio?'s knee-je again, his kneerk l liberalism s only going to mean that the big apple is in for a long period of rising crime and increased hopelessness. so why do residents keep voting for this as the hussein don't be fooled again now here with me is chris swecker, former assistant director of the fbi and j.w. cortez, an 18 year veteran of the mta police department, a discipline instructor, j.w. now you spentnt years underground as an empty officer. now even with the camera malfunction, how is this unusual for someone to be able to evade the police for as many hours as he's been ablee to evade them given this massive manhunt that's underway? you know, i've always been of the mindset that sometimes criminals can be a bit clever in their dealings. sometimes we have a tendency to believe that they're all just plain old dumb. but that's not i always the case here. and i think this individual has demonstrated that on more than one instance today he has carefully plotted to basically wreak havocea on our system and inflict true and real pain on our passengers. i it is it is of the utmost importance that we do not forget that these people do have whatever it is they have between i their ears. but they're using that thing and they're using it to inflict real harmhe and cause real terru on our system.raor and that's how creates for many years'v we've been worriede' 20 years we've been worried about a subwayy attack. now they sort of immediately dismissed concerns of terrorisml ,which a lot of people thought was a little odd. i'm not an expert in this. the shee but i kept thinkingr about the sheer panic of the passengers with the smokear in the compartment, the shots going offtm and just no way to get out until the next stop. this was terrifying w. yes, subways, there are lawwa enforcement versusys bonder nightmare.e. we saw that in europe after 9/11. we've seennwe different events in new york city and it is it is a when you're targeting a subway rush hour in manhattan or brooklyn or what have you, you're trying to inflict mass chaos and mass casualties and that brings to mindul terrorism. and i wouldn't rule out terrorism here. terrorism ter is defined as tryg to affect political change or social changeha through force and violence. cen and this person has had some social media that give mece some concern. so i'm not ruling out terrorism . right terrorism can come, fromm the left and it can come fromm the right and come from different political spectrums it and it doesn't always have to be international terrorism. terroris i'm not ruling that out well. and it was really strange series of online rants. the new york post is reporting. and today they made a really brief mention of this at the press conference a few hours ago. on but he was ranting v on various topics., he was against eric to eric adams. i made a number of reallyno inflammatory racial statements, j.w. i'm not going to read them on the air. but you can imagine what i'mki talking about involve words like the, the white mfa's a and he talked about plotting tot shoot and kill or knock old ladies across the head ghd knock them down becausese of the hopelessness of the plight of black americans. am americans. this was -- this is quite this is this is quite something to behold as the new york post is reporting your comments on that i i. it's once again here we are. i think we've been beating the drum long and hard enough and i think, you know, this isr now on our shores. s that this i would imagine that this individual probably as small as this may sound, probably isn't someone that is fair. probably someone that had he jumped a turnstile and there was a cop there in front ofim them probably could have, initiated a subject stop and who knows what that may have lent. we probably wouldn't be where we are today. we'reso you telling everyone leave it up to the subject matter experts, leave it to the people who do this for a living. listen to to us, invit us .r wha invite us to the table.re let's hear what we're trying to say and see if we can kind of implement or systemize this approach to not only the homelessness situation in new york city and on o the subway system, but this these potential active shooter scenarios, these online rants spoke to what he perceived to be the hopeless plight of african-americans.s. he referenced the ukraine . kill for then you t shouldn't go t over there to to kill for them. basically you're going to endte up dead. so you're your only alternative, i guess. unbelievae unbelievable. your only alternative is to - commit acts of violence. but it was quite specificth in theseis in the series of videos that were just released late today. i i don't think it'st' a stretch a sayur that the lawlessness thats taking place over the last two years has created enabled this environment, if you will, that you can take ordinary criminals, for example, or peoplena who have a beef nora matter what it isp and wrap it up in a cause and then it becomes it seems justified. it seems okay that almost motivates this type of thing. th soing, i don't think that'sam a stretch at all. several i've lamented this in several different you know, in lots of different commentaries that we've disrespected the police, we've defunded him. we have we have not enabled them to do their job. new york city wasas ground zero for crime prevention for so long and they did so welln and along comes one administration just knocks them out of the boxnock, takes s their tools, takes away a their funding, takes away their respect. e we've seen all seen those videos of people throwing stuff at police officers have to sit there and take it out. that's reallyit that's a really i mean it hits you in the gut. your comment tonight , chris and j.w. just finally basically saying what he's saying. why should youg wh even be alive given how everything is stacked against you? it goes on and on and basically saying like they're all against us , everyone hates us so we have to kill them first. is itfirst. a stretch to says that some of this atmosphere that chris was just referencing certainly inflames the minds of perhaps already disturbed individuals? it absolutely does. it and this is why, you know, we are so focused here in new york to not only obviously combathe the crime and employ our fellow americans. rime listen, today was a prime example. see something, say something. you know, for 19 years we've been imploring our brightest to pay. if you see something speak up today they not we spoke up, they acted. they went out there. m they applied these makeshift tourniquets. they saved lives today and we t need more of that together. it's the only way. chris and j.w., thank you both h tonight . and again, it could have been much, much worse now i do fears that what we saw in new york this morning is not as bad is going to get as the economic downturn hits millions of americansli bankruptcies, foreclosures begin in earnest, unemployment will end up rising and this will only make mattersm worse in urban areas. now what are we talking about? what do we mean a one percentte increase in foreclosure creates about a two point three percents increase in violent crimes. so. it's vital that our countryr move to expeditiously turn things around. anything less in history tells h us this is going to spiral out of control.. crime will sink the democrats come novemberim, according to a new cbs news yougov poll. has a sixtyden one percent disapproval rating on crime and a new rasmussen poll finds that 81ers percent of likely voters expect crime to be an important issue ahead of the midterms. that same poll shows that 61 shs percent believe the problem of violence in america is getting worse. only 11% think it's getting any better. here here now is mark penn, former clinton strategist and democratic pollsterr and tou bevan, president and co-founder of real clear politics. there'ser a lot to chew over here. i was i was surprised a little bit when mayor adams after this terrifying morning in new york where people arew still on edge. they're telling me friends of mine in new york city that in immediately becomes an anti-gun crusade instead of immediate focus on the task at hand , f which is finding this person of interest. >> i mean, i mean, i was surprised by that as well. i think where crime is now a big central issue going back to the 80s and 90s whens was an important national issue. stu there's stunning crime in ournn major citiesing cri. ntry for te this is going to be the talk of the country for the next couple of days. really this is a big problem. it needs big solutions, notin just guns butg, sentencing but really understanding what we do with mental illness.no you know d what weo o really do on all fronts in terms of fighting crime, maybe even going back to a broken window unless we really have some big solutions here, we're not going to solve this problem nowin and again, i'm just, going to go back and when the economy goes down, the worst of what we're seeing now aren't going tong get any better t. sh i mean and tom, to mark's point, shortly after the shooting today a witness i thought very interesting on msnbc watch. t t we liveof in the neighborhood i used to. yes. t and what do youou make ople this ? you know what you've heard i that has happened to people i injured? l ti'm thankful to have gone out the neighborhood, thankful i don't live arounde here anymore because it's only s getting worse every single dayin and not getting any better with the new laws that are passingth thomas urban flight a and that's happening all across this country. ats and the what does that say about the democrats and the liberals who have led these cities for so long? yeah, i mean it's happened here in chicago as well. we've lost thousands upon thousands of residents a lot oft them african-american who are fleeing for parts of the city where the violence issthrm the worst. look, crime is i is an issue evn though homicide rates are down a little this year. a you know,, assaults, robberies a are all up and we're seeing it. carjackings, for example, in chicago and other cities. and it's not just in the urban areas. it's spreading toas the suburbs. so this is definitely going to be a big election issue. gallup just didis two a poll ons two weeks ago, 53% of people said it is a major concern now that's the highest it's been since 201620 and it's right thee below the economy and inflation. so it is definitelyyye on the minds of americans will only be so more so moving forward after afterovin it is tragedy in new york. a >> and mark, when yound see scenes like we saw this morning, we wonder how some of our friends in the media can ignore this much longer. this is how cnn's jim sciutto analyze today's events. i've heard it consistently from new york police officers and we've heard this from public comments from the commissioner, from the mayor about the problem with guns and gun violence in new york where those guns come from, how easy it is to get them into the city fromne from other states.ns come from they speak they speak with them coming from southern states, m often with more lax gun laws. so mark, a former obaman official then turned towi anger blaming southern states gun laws because a shameless lookng again s, this is going to need a comprehensive approach. look, take the subways in newin york., ing you can'tto get new york back . subwa it's the subways aren'tys safe because then people can't get safely to work . aren't safe and so what the mayor has to dor is put forth an immediate program for subway safetyut and reassure people that they'll be able to get toat work clearing out homeless encampments now that are within the subway cars and make it safe. i mean, that's got to be job number one for any mayor. o be well, i think we know it works. giuliani did it and it worked.to i mean wasw like we know what the economy we're going to- get to that next segment, but we know what works if they want to reinvent the wheel. are going to get to that next segment mark and tom, importantbut discussion. thank you . and remember, if youwe can't kn watch us live, ylet's tick tic. you should make sure to set a series record on your dvr so you focus of tonight's angle. w we know w >> well now we know what it's like to haveto bumbling halfwits running the country. now this just isn't a president forgetting words and names on occasion. an administration responsible for sparking a fulli blown economic crisis. now despite being warned by larry summers, one of the only smartheri democratic economists left in america, they tried to happy talk inflationcayin way. o we also know that as our economy has come roaring back , someee some price increases. some folks raise worries that this could be a sign of persistent inflationut. but that's not our view. our experts believe the data shows that most of the price increases we've seen arere were expected and expected to bend t temporaryo temper. then they to >> and then they told their minions in the press the klayman's inflation was alle just a bunch of conservative spin. the talking point s on the right and especially among the trump right that there's this bidenha inflation situation happening in the country. right wing parties are scaremongeringpp about inflation and wages going up too high.. well, the angle predicted the inflation bomb over a year ago. at's wthat's what they were tali about, i guess.nd and indeed it's really, really bady and even though the lefted was finally forced to drop its inflation denial, reporters are still trying to leave bidenst wiggle roomil. while deeply troubling to the white house, the u.s. inflation ratee is nowhere close to a record with nearly 15% inflation in the early 1980s along with soaring unemployment today, a low unemployment rate of three point six percent and a strong demand for workers offers optimism abouttr the prospect for a stronger economy ahead after there'sat a lot of rioting over get this basic economics i never learned it. when stuff gets expensive as it is, consumers pull back as they are and businesses start laying off, it's inevitable indeed. over the weekend, larry summers is back toward the r word when we've had inflation above four and we've had unemployment below for essentially always since world war two that's been followed by a recession now in fact, to avoid inflation, he said the fed would have tobe be extraordinarily skillful and lucky and that they'd havejo a very, very difficult job ahead of them. the nowm. is being charitable there. these people are neither skillful noror lucky.nt. they're totally incompetent.. i and i know this is going tos goe written off as just another b right wing spin, but the angle believes that this inflation spiral biden created could mean the end of the democratic party for a generation. remember afterener. jimmy cartet took democrats 12 years to shake off the carter hangover and win the presidency again. so a you would think that thes democrats would see today's news as a sign that it is time to pivot, to moderate, to learn. but you'd be wrong. erything wit i'm doing everything within my power by executive ordershieo bring down the price'v and address the putin price.e right. in fact, we've already made progress since march inflation data was collected. you your family budget, your ability to fill upr your tank, none of it shouldon hinge on whether a dictator declares war and commitswa in half a world away to help deal with this food price hike. >> oh my gosh. he's still trying to sell that tired old line. all right. good luck with that. now harry truman famously said the buck stops here. biden says it stops more than five thousand miles away. and metropol, of course, this absurd head . biden continued to keep america energy independent. what have gasoline down at around two bucks a gallon would be a huge relief to our families and had biden stuck with trump's economic policies would still have low inflation r and maybe even rising median income which trump had. but hise but his team of dolts refused i to concedet' that it's time to change course.t's a they think it's just allll a messaging problem a m. ifvi we can only convince americans that the president feels their painn and is doing everything possible, you're seeing a president that is focused on keeping an international coalition resolve to do what is necessary to a counter putin's actions in ukraine while doingrat everything that we can to protect consumers here at home jake. tapper wasn't believing that it is safe. well, this isas a completen' and total lie. oncece they plan to sanction russian oil, they needed to immediately open up more federal land for drilling ,issue more drilling permits, l green light, keystone, et cetera,ig generally they needed to flood the marketer with american oil and gasic that would have not only help consumers here and tamp down inflation, it would have drivenh the price of oil down globally and that would hurt putin.t. but no, no, no, couldn't do w that . they would have offended the greenbacks. just pray that somedayoffe vehicl'll be able to afford ane, electric vehicle people and it'll be okay sort of that our secretary of transportation is pretty much out of ideasas. magic there's no quick or magic fix, but there's always a out of politics around gas prices. we're focused on what's actually going to bring the relief o. uthorized so the president authorized the release of the reserves. that's going to helpp . beliy god. i can't believe the rhodes scholarship went downevnt. ponsv it is an irresponsible move to deplete our reserves. nomic it's a self-inflicted economic blow to the nation. we're not experiencingbl an emergency beyond our control. biden did it d to us all. they're spending the needless one point nine trillion dollars and covid relief last year passed, by the way, with zero republican support. the damaging covid protocols, the controlsagingtr they put ine that continue to keep ourno economy all bollixed up and the refusal to enforce the border, all of it creates more economic strain on american families. ede in a not so veiled swipe at the white house's use of putin price hikes to explain away high energy costs john awaay manchin exploded today in a written statement saying i it ia a disservice to the american people to act as ifo a inflation is a new phenomenon harder thani wages and financial savings are disappearng faster every month as prices continue to climb. while the pain and frustration of spending more on everyday items lingers over a thall especially among those who can't afford at least that does not include nancy pelosi. o >> yet right now biden not onlyy refuses any responsibility here, his jayvee squad at the cabinet is doubling down t on the very policies that got us in this hole in the firsthi place. there's virtually no way to turn this thing around now without triggering a recession. that's how. hipid they were and our next guest thinks we might already be in a recession. biden's focus, if he's capable ofof focusing, should be immediately trained on fixing the economic mess, his stupid move against so-called ghost jets, a total waste of time. it's going to have zero effect on crime rates across h the country. if he wanted to. signal to americans that he reallyte understands the severity of what's happening, he could doal something reallyly meaningful. every single person on his economic team should be fired.i, in fact, anyone who advised the president that inflation was transitory should resign or be terminated.e this means treasury secretary janet yellened by energy secretary jennifer granholm never should have been there m in the first place. mayor peteay at transportation he can bikewaytion almost all of his economic advisers should go and he should start with brianis deese. and on what basis should jeromeb will be renominated as feded chair? by the way, his failure to respond quicker to obvious inflation concerns should mean he steps aside the liftoffs list of the staff failures is really long. take a whole hour but there has to bee accountability. re we don't want to hear anything more about the first woman. there's the first that we need the best and the brightest. skin color, whatever your background, running our economy not the first and the dimmest.immest now the last time we saw such inflation numbers, it took three democrat losses in a row to get the party's attention.ere they were annihilated in nineteen eighty nineteen a eighty four and lost big in nineteen eighty eight . so who knows how long it'sto going to take for them to wake i up this timeme i have no idea. but in the meantime americans will have to budgetto b smartly, organize passionately and choose their candidates wisely and that's the angle joininge is kevin hassett, former chair of the council of economic advisors undermi trumpo and distinguished visiting fellow at the hoover institution, authorwr of the drift stopping america's slide into socialism. slide kevin , i mentioned the angle and the angle that you believeve and you said this onon my podcat today that we may already be in recession. explain that . right. so what's going on is that the biden inflation it's not the putin inflation. it's the biden inflation we can talk about why is has produced such a highwh inflation rate that wages just can't keep up. and so what's happening is that prices are going up faster than your income and so therefore your real income is going down now national income isna what gdp is with actual income declines two quarters in a row. that's a recession. and right now everybody's incomes in real terms are declining. and so we're very, very not a ce if not already in a recession. e so this idea, as jeff zeleny of cnn said that well, things are optimistic for us because we have low unemployment. that makes no sense given what's happening or you can already see consumers beginning to pull back on spending. right. you can see that like even in the release today that used car price was finally there, de% up relative to last year.r. butclined declined a lot. and that's why the core inflation number which takes oution t food and energy was a little bit of a positive surprise. of course, the only thinghe the white house was pointing to. but the fact is that inflation really out of control. i heard when you're playing that clip that they said we're nowhere near 15%, which is the all time high. actually if you take this month's inflation number and annualize it, just pretend j this month for the ret of the year that you get 14 percent inflation. and so the eight and a half that people are talking about that's backward looking, a whole big chunk ofut last year when there wasn't much inflation. but it's accelerating and the fed is way behind the curve. i talked today at hoover to my colleague michael bordo, one of the great monetary historiansfri is sort of the current version of milton friedman. and i said, you know, my lookfr at the dataie is that inflation doesn't start to go down unless interest rates are higher than t the inflationhe rate. and michael confirmed yes, that's his view of the literature tooooat that basically interest rates right now are you know, we're not going to get inflation under control win unless interet rates go up six , seven, eight percent and the fed is not going to act that aggressively. and so inflation isn reallyis t of control and that's going to make real incomes decline and toss us into a a recession. the final thing i want to add, though, is that this idea that gas prices are putin's fault, one of the very firstof things that biden did and i wrote about this recently in a r national review article the headline or the title is mission accomplished. but one of the first things they did t things thet is estimate what y call the social cost of carbon because they had to save t us from climate change and save the planet. and in that reportan that theyi put out, they told us what their target oil price was and went through the math in national review and it was basically about 100 hundred dollars a barrel . so they hit the target now is because actually they hit their target. you know, mission accomplished by this put the price of oile exactly where he told whenfi he took office he wanted it tora be. >> so youou w wouldould argue ts perhaps isn't incompetence, this is purposeful venality.ty? i mean, justt what's what's their ultimate goal to savego the planet and kill america? >> well, you know, shuttingn down pipelinespi and stopping permitting and threatening the heck out of companiesat, that's basically beenn i their strategy. they've done it in the energy sector and everywheren else. now, laura , i read about this in the drift that there's like the near term thing that's the cause of inflation, which is they're printing moneyrind and sending checks to people. bg the biere's a bigger thing too.r and thegger bigger thing is more ominous. and it's this if you go to a store in a socialist country ,what do you see? not nothing. right? the sort. okay, now supposey you and it te a capitalist country and it transitions to being a socialist countrys this is what i write about in the drift. then along the way all ofst a sudden you go toor a store and there's less and less stuff and it costs more and more . and while that's happening, the socialist governments tell you, oh , it's transitory, it's about disruption but know what's going on is that they've waged war on american business.s american businesses have decided they're not going to re to meet the higher demand because if they do, theni they're going to be regulatedhe and taxed within an inch of their life by the administration. butrautsn't this kevin , isn't g expectations, lowering what you expect out of your life? i mean, you can still have a fine life. you're just not going have as much. . hat's going i mean, that's that seems to be what's going on here. locked and that started with the covid lockdown's get used to having not as muchuc freedom, get usedc to not being able to get in your car and drive as far conditioant whenever you want. i think a lot of them felt like conditioning a lot of people who were watching this take place because we knew it wouldn't workk as a medical intervention. and as we can, see, id. lockdown's and work just finally though, kevin ,er on this build back better plan which biden is still touting. >> i want you to react to this because he said this today at lunch, called on congress to move immediately to lower the cost of families, utility bills, prescription drugs. those are more most impactfuldd ways that congress can address inflation. right now i'm doing everything w within my power by executive order to bring down the price and address the putin price. we've in fact, has already made progress since march. inflation data was collected. >>wa kevin sounds a lot like price controls. yeah. yeah. you know, these guys just don't have a clue. you know, basically build back better is printing more money and mailing it to people. to and you know, if you could say you're mailing it to people to h helpel them pay their utility bill or to help them pay forut hamburger. but you're mailing checks tot people with phony money and that makes inflation worse . and this i is very, very seriou. and again, i go into this with the drift that inflation is like this can destroy a countryy because all of a sudden people say, hey, i don't want to lendrt money to that country because i have no idea what the dollar is going to beh ow worth a year from now. and so the fed has to act wayto more aggressively than they have and republicans need to basically stop build b back betteret and anything else. i propose in that we got itho wrong. we got it wrong. but i have toshould b say they d back larry summers and steve mnuchin a and maybe you if you o it, come back and help save our country.o that's what they should nk you. but they're not going to do that . all right, kevin ,
