Chicopee councilors want to hire code enforcement officer to handle more than 200 problem properties Updated Feb 04, 2021; CHICOPEE Concerned about multiple property owners who have been violating regulations for years, some city councilors are hoping to restore a code enforcement officer position eliminated many years ago. There are more than 200 problem properties on a list kept by a committee that meets regularly on the topic. Some of the properties have been in violation of city ordinances for four and five years, City Councilor William Courchesne said at a recent meeting. “We can eliminate a lot of those problems if we have someone who can go out and ticket them every day, because eventually they are going to get the message,” he said.

The state Department of Transportation approved a grant application for $76,642 under the Shared Winter Streets and Spaces program to allow the city to create the Center Loop that will wind around parts of Center, Exchange, Chestnut, Front and Cabot Streets for slightly more than a mile.

Chicopee eyes recall provision following councilor’s offensive statements Updated Jan 22, 2021; Facebook Share CHICOPEE The City Council is beginning the process to add a recall amendment to the charter in reaction to a councilor’s online comments that sparked protest and public calls for him to resign. Council President Shane D. Brooks proposed writing a recall amendment and having it adopted through home rule petition, which would need the approval of the council, the mayor and the state Legislature. At the same time, Councilor Joel McAuliffe filed an order to have the nearly 125-year-old charter completely reviewed. The City Council sent both proposals to the ordinance committee this week for further discussion.
