Chicopee councilors want to hire code enforcement officer to handle more than 200 problem properties
Updated Feb 04, 2021;
CHICOPEE Concerned about multiple property owners who have been violating regulations for years, some city councilors are hoping to restore a code enforcement officer position eliminated many years ago.
There are more than 200 problem properties on a list kept by a committee that meets regularly on the topic. Some of the properties have been in violation of city ordinances for four and five years, City Councilor William Courchesne said at a recent meeting.
“We can eliminate a lot of those problems if we have someone who can go out and ticket them every day, because eventually they are going to get the message,” he said.
Chicopee Mayor John Vieau proposes bulk waste pickup, other programs to combat illegal dumping and littering
Updated Feb 01, 2021;
CHICOPEE The city is planning to purchase two trucks and hire two employees to try to reduce illegal dumping and littering throughout the city.
“I want Chicopee to be one of the cleanest cities in Western Mass., if not the cleanest,” Mayor John L. Vieau said as he rolled out his new plan. “I want to focus in on building pride. It bothers me to see people littering.”
When the privately owned Chicopee Sanitary Landfill closed in 2019, the city changed to a new system of trash collection that limited the amount of rubbish people could throw away for free. That left residents searching for ways to get rid of appliances, furniture, mattresses and other large items. Now their only option is to bring it to a private waste company, one of which charges a minimum fee of $130 to bring up to a ton of waste.

Jan. 19 CHICOPEE Continual problems with the broadcasting of the City Council meetings have grown so bad that council president Shane D. Brooks sometimes relies on texts from his mother to known when the audio shuts off to the viewing public.
Then in the last meeting which drew a lot of attention and a protest over a councilor’s Facebook comments a glitch in the Zoom function on the meeting disconnected half the councilors who were attending the meeting remotely four times during the 40-minute meeting. While those councilors could still hear what was happening, several times it shut down the councilors mid-sentence.
