Chicopee councilors want to hire code enforcement officer to handle more than 200 problem properties

CHICOPEE — Concerned about multiple property owners who have been violating regulations for years, some city councilors are hoping to restore a code enforcement officer position eliminated many years ago.
There are more than 200 problem properties on a list kept by a committee that meets regularly on the topic. Some of the properties have been in violation of city ordinances for four and five years, City Councilor William Courchesne said at a recent meeting.
“We can eliminate a lot of those problems if we have someone who can go out and ticket them every day, because eventually they are going to get the message,” he said.
