After Chicopee city councilor’s offensive comments, Darlene Reina plans her own campaign, encourages more women, people of color to run

Darlene Reina had been considering running for city councilor in Chicopee but after the response to a current city councilor writing offensive statements regarding sexual assault on Facebook, she knew her plans had to be “accelerated.”
Her campaign is not actually about him, in fact Reina doesn’t even consider herself to be running against the current Ward 3 councilor Lucjan Galecki. She’s running for her ward, her neighbors and representation, she said.
“It’s about making sure that there’s representation on our city council, where actions like his wouldn’t have happened to begin with or if they did, that there would have been a resounding censure or condemnation against those comments,” Reina said.

CHICOPEE The City Council is beginning the process to add a recall amendment to the charter in reaction to a councilor’s online comments that sparked protest and public calls for him to resign.
Council President Shane D. Brooks proposed writing a recall amendment and having it adopted through home rule petition, which would need the approval of the council, the mayor and the state Legislature.
At the same time, Councilor Joel McAuliffe filed an order to have the nearly 125-year-old charter completely reviewed. The City Council sent both proposals to the ordinance committee this week for further discussion.

CHICOPEE Protesters gathered in front of City Hall Tuesday to call for the resignation of a city councilor who said women wearing provocative clothing at “sketchy” nightclubs are at fault if they are sexually harassed.
About 20 residents held signs and chanted in a demonstration before a City Council meeting. The demonstrators called for Lucjan Galecki, who has served as the Ward 3 councilor for a year, to resign immediately.
The demonstration was organized by Our Revolution Chicopee. The group is calling for a recall provision to be added into the city charter and wants more information about sexual harassment training that will be offered to the council, said organizer Jeannette Rivera.
