RIGBY — A sixth-grade girl brought a gun to her middle school, shot and wounded two students and a custodian and then was disarmed by a teacher, authorities said. The three were shot in their extremities during the 9:15 a.m. Thursday incident at Rigby Middle School and are expected to survive, officials said at a Thursday afternoon news conference. All three victims were transported via ambulances to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls following the shooting. “Today we had the worst nightmare a school district could encounter,” Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin said Thursday following the incident. × Advertisement

The tragic incident happened in Rigby Middle School about 95 miles from the Yellowstone National Park, Associated Press reported. The motive for the sudden shooting is yet to be identified by the authorities, and it is still not clear how the female sixth grader got her handgun in the first place. Moreover, the name of the suspect was not given by the officials, but County Sheriff Steve Anderson disclosed that the female sixth grader is from a nearby city of Idaho Falls.

School shooter could face attempted murder charges; doctor says condition of victims is an absolute blessing

KSL TV RIGBY, Idaho It is an absolute blessing that two students and a custodian were not more seriously injured or killed after being shot Thursday morning at Rigby Middle School. Dr. Michael Lemon, the trauma medical director at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, said during a news conference at the Jefferson School District Office that three victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and should recover. The school employee was shot one time in what Lemon described as a through and through extremity injury. He was treated and released by Thursday afternoon. One student was shot once in an extremity and may require surgery, according to Lemon. The other student was potentially shot twice, and two limbs were hit.
