Ashley Murray will bring education back to Cape

Marilyn F. Booker What are your children being taught in the Cape Henlopen School District schools?   I’ll confess that I have no children in any Delaware school.  However, that doesn’t preclude my interest and concern about the content of the lessons your children and grandchildren are receiving.  Ashley Murray is running for the at-large school board position that is currently held by Janis Hanwell.  Janis has held this seat since 2016.  After speaking with Ashley and other parents with children currently in Cape schools, I found that schools in the Cape Henlopen School District have been teaching about “white privilege,” “critical race theory” and pushing the “1619 Project” - a “history” that has been labeled a myth by scholars across the country.  Ashley Murray is opposed to these radical lessons, and believes that our schools should be fully opened and teaching children to be successful in STEM studies rather than these progressive ideologies that vi

Cast your vote: Hanwell for Cape school board

Laura Willey-Brittingham May 6, 2021 I am casting my vote for Janis Hanwell for Cape Henlopen school board. My family has known her since she first came to Cape Henlopen School District to teach at Milton Junior High. When my own daughters went through Cape, she was an administrator at the district office and was always there for me if needed. Just like when she was employed by Cape, Janis still supports parents’ efforts to make sure their children receive a high-quality education with the resources they need to excel.  As a current board member, she is always pushing for a rigorous academic curriculum, the best instructional leaders, a fair disciplinary system, and solid career pathways that will prepare students to be successful and productive adults in whatever field they choose. Janis is also committed to making sure the district provides the supports and programs necessary to close the achievement gap, and while there is still work to be done, observable gains ha

Hanwell offers great expectations for Cape district

Dr. Marlene A. Saunders & Sue Nyden May 6, 2021 Parents, students and alumni of the Cape Henlopen School District should expect graduating students to emerge as young adults who know how to think critically, are open and listen to opinions and thoughts of others, and behave as informed, considerate and concerned citizens. These young people should understand their communities and the world are made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds with varying experiences who should be accorded the same opportunities and respect all citizens expect to enjoy. This understanding leads to upholding the values of equal rights for all. The extent to which students learn these qualities is directly related to the Cape Henlopen schools and the decisions board members make regarding curricula, extracurricular programs, and funding.

Our children are our future in Cape District

Patricia Lester May 6, 2021 What is taught in our schools determines the educational proficiency and social perspectives of our children. We are woefully failing in this task, and are creating a country that will be uncompetitive globally, its citizens hating their country and one another. School boards significantly influence the management of our schools, and that is why these elections have become so important. Increasingly, school boards are indoctrinating our children, rather than educating them. While Cape Henlopen High School is held as an icon of great public-school education in the state, students achieve a 33 percent proficiency in math and a 58 percent proficiency in reading/language. Cape students are not only uncompetitive in the state, but lag students in many other states and worldwide.

Hanwell committed to Cape District goals

Sue Claire Harper May 6, 2021 On May 11 I look forward to casting my vote in the Cape school board elections for Janis Hanwell, our incumbent Cape Henlopen board of education member at-large. Having previously served within the Cape Henlopen District as teacher, principal and assistant superintendent, I can’t imagine better credentials for anyone committed to serving the diverse needs of the children of our district.  Janis’ perspective is firmly grounded in an in-depth understanding of the history of our rapidly growing district, which administrative and teaching practices need to be preserved, as well as which critical issues need to be addressed so that the needs of all students are met, regardless of their socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
