Family: Husband and three children ages 17, 12 and 6
Education: Associate’s degree in science, Delaware Technical Community College
Relevant employment: I am presently working for Allstate as an insurance agent. In my professional career, I meet people every day who have concerns about the Cape school quality and philosophy.
Relevant experience: As the mother of three, I have watched my children struggle through the last year. I have been forced to work from home and take a pay cut so that I could supervise my children while they struggled through remote and hybrid learning from home.
Top reason for running: Our children have suffered significant emotional and academic harm over the last year. It is time to place the needs of children first, and I feel I can be a facilitator of that change.

On the steps of Legislative Hall on a March afternoon, five school board candidates stood before a crowd calling for a complete reopening of Delaware public schools.
“We have a lot of radicals that are controlling our school boards,” said Lisa McCulley, a lead organizer of Stand Up Delaware. Since the start of the pandemic, the grassroots group had held rally after rally calling Gov. John Carney’s COVID-19 restrictions an infringement on individual liberties.
She pointed to Appoquinimink School District as an example, a school board with “one awesome conservative” overruled by “three women who control the whole board.”

As a one of the first to be hired in the Cape Henlopen School District and a native Sussex Countian, I am pleased to be able to support one of Cape Henlopen’s finest educators, Janis Hanwell.
I worked with Janis for more than 20 years, and I know that she is a dedicated, knowledgeable, and experienced educator. She should be able to continue to maintain the excellent Cape Henlopen School District reputation as a member of the Cape Henlopen school board.
Janis does not need to be trained in what is needed to educate our young scholars; she knows how important it is to follow the Cape Henlopen mission to provide academic excellence, celebrate diversity, provide equity and inclusion for all students. That is and has always been “The Cape Way” as we made this one of the best school districts in the State of Delaware.
