On May 11 I look forward to casting my vote in the Cape school board elections for Janis Hanwell, our incumbent Cape Henlopen board of education member at-large. Having previously served within the Cape Henlopen District as teacher, principal and assistant superintendent, I can’t imagine better credentials for anyone committed to serving the diverse needs of the children of our district. Janis’ perspective is firmly grounded in an in-depth understanding of the history of our rapidly growing district, which administrative and teaching practices need to be preserved, as well as which critical issues need to be addressed so that the needs of all students are met, regardless of their socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

As a one of the first to be hired in the Cape Henlopen School District and a native Sussex Countian, I am pleased to be able to support one of Cape Henlopen’s finest educators, Janis Hanwell.
I worked with Janis for more than 20 years, and I know that she is a dedicated, knowledgeable, and experienced educator. She should be able to continue to maintain the excellent Cape Henlopen School District reputation as a member of the Cape Henlopen school board.
Janis does not need to be trained in what is needed to educate our young scholars; she knows how important it is to follow the Cape Henlopen mission to provide academic excellence, celebrate diversity, provide equity and inclusion for all students. That is and has always been “The Cape Way” as we made this one of the best school districts in the State of Delaware.
My name is Quinlyn Long, and I am a junior at Cape Henlopen High School. It has been brought to my attention that I was quoted in an article written by a school acquaintance that I feel has put me and my school in a negative light. Nikola Alisija.

The application deadline is Monday, May 3.
Scholarship applicants must beSussex County residents who have been employed as paraprofessionals for at least three years in a K-12 school in the Cape Henlopen District school. They should have already begun the process for certification.
Demonstrated understanding of racial justice through action is an essential criterion for the scholarship award. Such actions might include peer mentoring, volunteering for literacy education, coaching, participating in relevant organizations, or facilitating programs within the school that promote cultural diversity,
