Rep Steve McMillan to retire

Rep. Steve McMillan to retire 41 years and thousands of pages of legislation marks one of the longest tenures in the Alabama House Posted By Allison Marlow Last week State Rep. Steve McMillan announced that he would not run for another term in the Alabama House of Representatives. The decision marks the twilight of a 41-year career in Montgomery. McMillan represents State House District No. 95, which includes Barnwell, Bon Secour, Elberta, Foley, Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores, Josephine, Lillian, Magnolia Springs, Miflin, Ono Island, Orange Beach, Perdido Beach, Robertsdale and Summerdale. “I’ve about accepted the reality of it, I needed to. City officials get first peak at Freestanding Emergency Department in Gulf Shores

By Melanie LeCroy/melanie@gulfcoastmedia.com Gulf Shores and Orange Beach city officials and stakeholders had the opportunity to get a first look at the completed South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department in Gulf Shores May 12. While the facility is complete it is not yet open to the public. Administrators are waiting for the clinical survey by the state of Alabama but hope to be open by Memorial Day. The interior of the 14,000 square foot facility has been decorated to reflect the area with coastal artwork and a beachy color palette. When patients walk through the front entrance, a check-in area will direct patients to the Emergency Room waiting area or the Outpatient waiting area. Patients needing lab work, x-rays, mammography or other imaging can come to the facility instead of going to the Foley campus. The lab and imaging are staffed 24 hours a day.

Ground broken for Ono Island fire station

By Melanie LeCroy The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Ono Island Fire Station No. 4 was held April 14. The new 6,085 square foot facility will be built across the street from the existing station. The City of Orange Beach and Ono Island have a fire protection and emergency services agreement in place due to Ono Island being outside of city limits. As part of the agreement, the city purchased a new engine and equipment with Ono Island repaying the cost over 10 years. The agreement also includes the Ono Authority constructing the new station. The new fire station, designed by McCollough Architecture, is scheduled to be complete in April 2022. It will be constructed by M.W. Rogers Construction. It is designed to withstand 175 mph wind speeds and will include six bunk rooms, a private office, an emergency medical service room, two apparatus bays and storage space.
