we had blankets and things. i got in there in time. reporter: officials say one tornado brought winds upwards of 170 miles per hour, the base 1; 1/2 miles wide. in mississippi, sturdy brick homes reduced to rubble. ron sullivan and four customers in his small grocery store. when it hit the building it literally was an explosion. it was gone immediately. reporter: throughout the tornado zone there are stories of survival. dale thrasher was in the hillcrest baptist church when the tornado hit. it destroyed the two-story building but with the building crumbling around him he found safety under a table, near the pulpit. one area of the church that didn t get destroyed. i asked the lord to protect me. covered my head and heard the building starlight caving in. reporter: amazingly he walked away with just a small cut. five people in this county didn t make it. authorities tell us that two of them were children. abc news, french cap, mississippi. closer to home heavy
