They also say they are forced to move outside of oakland just to maintain a living because they simply cant afford to live in oakland anymore without that cost of living increase. The city has offered the unions a 4 increase the first year. And a 2 increase the second year. But that 2 is contingent upon generated revenue that the union says they felt was too impossible to meet. They proposed an 8 increase in pay overall over two years but mayor schaaf says they cant spend money they dont have. That would require the city to cut 188 fulltime workers because of the 19 million deficit the city would face in two years. But the fight is deeper than money tonight.
