Hundreds packed city hall to say goodbye to mayor ed lee. A live look at that memorial. Lee passed away after a heart attack early tuesday morning. I was in the rotunda during todays memorial and had a chance to speak to some of the people who knew him best. They agreed this celebration of life was respectful, classy, and at times full of life and laughter just like ed lee himself. Hes got the whole world in his hands reporter if the music cass any indication, mayor lees memorial was a celebration of life. It was really fitting for someone who i regard as a good friend. Reporter along with stories of his accomplishments our Unemployment Rate oclock had been nearly 10 when he took over, is down to 2. 7 today. Reporter his impact on our community. Recollections from his daughters tonya and briana of the man they called dad. Sometimes it was through his texts that he would send us as he went about his day, like a bitmoji of him in a warriors jersey doing a slam dunk. All of those things represented a picture of a true, wonderful human being who should not have died. Reporter so many remembered ed lees smile and love of music. Climb halfway to the stars reporter his infectious laugh and sense of humor. But in china, mayor lee was like beyonce with the moustache. In so many ways he lived his eulogy. Resume, the skills you bring to life. But the eulogy is what matters. Reporter if theres one thing to take away from todays celebration of life, congressman nancy pelosi may have said it best. Everybody in this room San Francisco. Everybody in this room loves ed lee. Open your garden gates so many mourners couldnt get inside city hall, but still wanted to say their goodbye to the mayor. Reporter reverend fong with the China Town CommunityDevelopment Center rushed to the hospital so fast the night 11 collapsed he got pulled over. Big loss for San Francisco. I dont know how its going to carry out. But i hope the city can continue to do justice, care about the homeless, care about people that dont have avoice. Reporter former San Francisco mayor frank jordan was touched by the outpouring of support. I am proud to be here with all the other mayors of San Francisco and the people of our city who have come forward in such a warm, friendly way. Its still tough. I was in the office, all his personal belongings are gone reporter Lieutenant Governor gavin newsom says lee was at his Holiday Party a week ago and was fundraising for him only hours before his heart attack. Developing from atlanta, tens of thousands of travelers are stranded after a daylong outage knocked out electricity to the worlds Busiest Airport. Power is back on but delays are being felt worldwide after hundreds of flights were canceled, including some here in the bay area. They went out, then they went back on, then they went back out again. On the campus today, one of georgia powers three substations had a fire. There are two substations that power hartsfieldjackson airport. Reporter thousands of passengers stranded. Its frustrating, but then again, everything happens for a reason. So i dont know, were just trying to make the best of it. Atlanta airport, no power, no lights. Reporter passengers forced to use flashlights and in some parts of the airport the only sights and sounds the emergency announcements. Right now were just focusing on the comfort of our passengers, because we know that they have had a very, very long and difficult day. Reporter up to 100 planes stuck on the tarmac, hundreds more canceled or delayed. I think for airlines that are headquartered in atlanta like delta, its going to have a cascaded effect, its going to take a long time to figure out crew schedules, putting the airplanes in the right place. At San Francisco international, passengers bound for atlanta had to reclaim their checked bags because of cancelations. Delta operates seven flights a day to its hub there, today six of those seven canceled. One passenger says she was rerouted to minneapolis and st. Louis to get to her final destination. Its a very complicated situation when you need to change flights with a cancelation, the problem in atlanta. United airlines flies twice a day to atlanta from sfo, both those flights were canceled tomorrow. Tomorrow, delta has canceled 300 monday flights. Developing news from Southern California where exhausted firefighters are entering their second week battling the growing thomas fire, 270,000 acres, an area larger than the size of new york city and boston combined. Flames are consuming land in both ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Evacuations remain in effect for the wealthy enclave of montecito, home to celebrities like oprah and ellen degeneres. The fire is 45 contained. North bay, a father and 6yearold son drowned at a beach. The Russian RiverFire Department says the boy and another child were swept into the water at about 2 15 at goat rock state beach. The father went into the water to try to rescue them. The other child made it safely out of the water on his own. The names of the father and son who drowned have not been released. An offduty east Bay Police Officer is under arrest for firing his gun inside one of San Franciscos most exclusive hotels. For a time refused to give himself up. Abc 7 News Reporter cornell bernard spoke to some shaken hotel guests. Its scary. I have a 4yearold. I would not expect that to happen here. Reporter guests at the four seasons shocked about reports of gunfire from inside the hotel. About 5 00 a. M. Sunday. A witness who stated that there was a male located in the building who was shooting a gun. Reporter police say the suspect is an offduty richmond Police Officer. Police sources tell abc 7 the off officer fired eight rounds from the 12th or 14th floor, which was under construction, and with few places for officers to take cover the took over 90 minutes to convince the man to surrender which finally happened at 6 30 a. M. He surrendered peacefully. Hes currently in our custody. And we have no reports of any injuries. Reporter police recovered a handgun belonging to the offduty cop. The four seasons general manager confirms to abc 7 news the man was a guest at the hotel. Other guests were questioned by police. Detectives, going down the stairwells and the floors, and theyre asking people standard questions. What are they asking . About if we heard gunshots. Im a very loyal four seasons guest. A little surprised nobody notified the guests at the hotel that there was a situation like that. Reporter the man was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation. We have placed the officer on administrative leave. And were conducting an administrative investigation on the incident. Reporter a motive for the gunfire is still unknown. Coffey park residents who lost everything in the fires returned to their neighborhood for holiday fun. And for many, it was bittersweet. It makes me sad too. An event made possible by the generosity of others. From the food to the toys, everything was donated. People also donated christmas trees. They were given to anyone who wanted to put one on their property. So far, about 140 of them have been given away. For now residents are finding comfort spreading Holiday Cheer with their old neighbors. Two residents of napa countys atlas peak met the heroes who saved their lives. Philip dahan and linda sawa stopped by the california Highway Patrol napa air operations hangar to meet officers gavin and lowe. Reporter hes a volunteer coach, so he doesnt get paid. Heat been driving a 25yearold car. So the head coach, mike mayes, got the idea to replace it. The team, parents, and community all pitched in.
