Pettit Named First-Team All-American

Pettit Named First-Team All-American Clemson, S.C. – Turk Pettit has been named a first-team All-American by the Collegiate Golf Coaches Association. The CGCA has only announced its first team.  The second, third and honorable mention teams will be announced at a later date this month. This is the second time Pettit has been named an All-American as he was an honorable mention selection as a freshman in 2018.  He is the first Clemson golfer to earn first-team All-America honors since Bryson Nimmer for the 2018-19 season. Pettit became the second Clemson golfer in history to win the National Championship when he shot a seven-under-par score of 273 over the 72 holes on the par 70 course. The native of Auburn, Ala. joined former Tiger Charles Warren in winning college golf’s greatest tournament, as Warren won the 1997 tournament at Conway Farms outside Chicago, Ill.

Penley Finalist for Dave Williams Award

Clemson, SC Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley is a finalist for the 2021  Dave Williams Award.  The award is presented to the national coach of the year by the Collegiate Golf Coaches Association.Penley is one of five finalists for the honor and is joined on the list by Michael Beard of Pepperdine, Alan Bratton of Oklahoma State, Trey Jones of Florida State, and Brandt Kieschwick of Sam Houston.Penley led the Tigers to the ACC Championship in his final year at the helm of the Clemson program, his 10th league title as Clemson head coach.   The Tigers reached the NCAA Tournament for the 37th time under Penley and advanced to the national tournament for the 30th time.  Clemson finished 13th at the tournament on Monday.Penley was named ACC Coach of the Year for the ninth time this year, tied for the most by any coach in any sport in Clemson history.   It gave Penley ACC Coach of the Year honors in five different decades, just the second coach in any sport to win the award in five differ

Three Tigers Named to Ping All-Region Team

Three Tigers Named to Ping All-Region Team Clemson, S.C. Turk Pettit,  Jacob Bridgeman, and Kyle Cottam have all been named to the  Ping All-Region Golf Team as chosen by the Collegiate Golf Coaches Association.   All three are key members of Clemson’s fourth-ranked team that is competing this weekend at the NCAA National Tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona. It marks the first time since 2018 and the seventh time since the CGCA starting picking all-region teams in 2007 that Clemson has had at least three golfers named to the team.  It is the third all-region selection for Pettit and Bridgeman and the first for Cottam.

Penley Named ACC Coach of the Year

Penley Named ACC Coach of the Year Clemson, S.C.- For the ninth time in a fifth different decade in his celebrated career, Clemson men’s golf coach Larry Penley has been named the ACC Coach of the Year. The announcement was made Monday morning on the ACC Network”s Packer & Durham television program. Penley, who will retire at the end of the season, led the Tigers to the ACC Championship two weeks ago in dramatic fashion, as the Tigers had a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over second-ranked Florida State in the match play championship. The victory gave Penley a 10th ACC championship in his 38-year career. Penley is now tied for third for the most ACC titles among Clemson head coaches regardless of sport. Bob Pollock had 11 in men’s indoor track and Dr. I.M. Ibrahim had 11 in men’s soccer. Penley is tied with former Clemson men’s tennis coach Chuck Kriese with 10.

Defending Champion Clemson Heads to Palmetto Intercollegiate Clemson, S.C Larry Penley’s Clemson men’s golf team heads to Aiken, SC Monday in pursuit of a second straight and fifth title in the team’s last eight appearances at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at famed Palmetto Club.    The Tigers are ranked eighth in the nation in the latest Collegiate Golf Coaches poll, the highest ranking of any team in the field and third among ACC schools. Clemson has won the tournament in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2020, and has nine Palmetto championships overall.  Clemson has played in the event off and on since 1968.  Penley has nine of his 79 tournament championships at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
