Swayne Begins Play in US Open Thursday

Clemson, SC -Clemson rising senior Alexandra Swayne begins play in the United States Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco, Cal. on Thursday.   She is the first active Clemson women’s golfer to qualify for the US Women’s Open.The native of Ohio who has dual citizenship in the Virgin Islands will be in the last group of the day off the 10th tee on Thursday, a 5:42 p.m. tee time Eastern Time.Swayne’s group includes Isabelle McCauley, a 17-year-old amateur from Minnesota, and professional Natsumi Nakanishi.This is Swayne’s first US Open.  She qualified through a 36-hole tournament at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. over May 3-5.   Swayne had rounds of 69 and 72 and her three-under-par 141 score finished second in the field.   She had four birdies in each round and shot nine-hole scores of 36-33 in the first round, then 36-36 in the second round on the par 72 course.Swayne was one of four Clemson women who attempted to qualify at Druid Hills.  All four finished in the to

Bridgeman Among Final 11 for Haskins Award

Clemson, SC Clemson junior Jacob Bridgeman is one of 11 players remaining on the Watch List for the 2021 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel.  The award recognizes the most outstanding NCAA male Division I player in college golf.   The award is voted on by college players, coaches and college golf media from around the nation.In addition to Bridgeman, the final watch list is made up of Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech, Eugenio Chacarra of Oklahoma State,  Pierceson Coody of Texas, Alex Fitzpatrick of Wake Forest,  Nick Gabrelcik of North Florida,  Noah Goodwin of SMU, Ryan Hall of South Carolina, John Pak of Florida State, David Puig of Arizona State, and Davis Thompson of Georgia. Bridgeman leads the nation in scoring average at 69.46, a figure that would be a Clemson single-season record.  He is ranked eighth in the nation by Golfweek and 16th by Golfstat in the latest individual college rankings. Three Tigers in Top 10 after Two Rounds of Valspar Collegiate Clemson, SC Jacob Bridgeman, Turk Pettit and Colby Patton all shot 36-hole scores of three-under-par 139 on Monday to lead Clemson to a tie for sixth place out of 11  teams at the Valspar Collegiate at the Floridian Golf Course in Palm City, Florida. The field includes six of the top 10 teams in the nation. Clemson had a team total of 563 on Monday, the same total as seventh-ranked Arizona State and 29 th ranked South Florida.    Tenth-ranked SMU has the team lead at 551, followed by top-ranked Florida State at 554.  Third-ranked Wake Forest is third at 556 and Ohio State is fourth at 558.   Fourth-ranked Pepperdine is fourth at 560.

Penley Wins 80th Tournament of Career

Penley Wins 80th Tournament of Career Clemson, S.C.  Jacob Bridgeman won his second tournament of the year and Colby Patton tied for the round of the day with a 67, leading Larry Penley and the Clemson golf team to the championship of the 15-team Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Club in Aiken, S.C. The victory was the 80 th of Penley’s career, just two short of the ACC record of 82 wins by former Wake Forest coach Jesse Haddock.   It marked the fifth time in the last eight appearances and the 10 th time overall, Penley’s Tigers have won the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
