Speaking on a radio show, commissioner bratton says its not just a new york problem. In many areas of the country, we are seeing a significant increase in crime after having experienced almost 20 years of steady decline. The nypds latest statistics show a 10 increase in murders through july 27th compared to the same period last year. Bratton says there are two main reasons. Some communities, unfortunately, people are feeling that the police really dont have enforcement powers, and thats the broken windows theory at work, that theyre feeling empowered to basically be more active in some of their behavior.
